  • Men back then all looked like poodles?

  • Very cool fight scene; though if I were Neeson I would have taken more advantage of those too-frequent pauses for breath from the beginning!

  • Nnoitora vs Kenpachi

  • Another Pommy bastard bites the dust.

    [giggle]

  • Rob ma przecież pałasz a nie rapier :P

  • Thats cheating

  • @sparkyinbath It works (Attack by Drawing)

  • Comment removed

  • him holding a lightsaber would be great !!

  • I haven't seen any better sword-fight scene. Such a great quality actorship and realistically shot scene. I liked this movie a lot, I watched it way long before, and still remember many of the scenes, mostly this one.

And I am glad that guy splitted into halves, it served him well. :D

  • you already fucked yourself by fucking with liam neeson.

  • WEEE!!! ima little girl wearing wigs and skirts!!! teehee~ lololol

  • That's the only movie sword fight scene I remember seeing that doesn't have kicks or punches.

  • could not tell ass from whim

  • Tim Roth is just amazing, and Liam Neeson also

  • That's a scary ass fight. Unforgettable

  • Long live Ireland and Scotland!

  • Tim Roth is amazing in this villain role.

  • in the famous words of Nelson Muntz..."AH-HA!"

  • why do they use skirts?

  • @Churruminonian FACEPALM their fucking scots and they are wearing kilts not skirts.omg the ignorance.

  • Those are not rapiers, they're small sword and Backsword :)

  • @Neostus specifically scottish baskethilt

  • @elgostine touche` ;)

  • @Neostus even more specifically, as you probably know, backsword is mostly single edged with a lsight false edge near the tip, the sword he has looks like its a souble edged broadsword rather than the backsword variety.

  • @elgostine precisely :)

  • i love liam neeson as rob roy. he makes the characters he plays real.

  • hahahahaha what fairy tale is this? xaxaxa

  • Tim Roth was such a douchebag in this flick. I loved the surprised look on his face when he was sliced open like a fish!

  • he likes getting sliced across the gut huh?

  • Moral of the story:

    Don't fuck with Liam Neeson!

  • @johnhamilton08 Or Ewan McGregor will slice you in half

  • it's always sunny when tim curry is dying

  • @Mandelbrotmat It's Tim Roth. Tim Curry is a different actor entirely.

  • @gbeach85 arrgh, you are right!! I am a fool to have misspoken so!!

  • @Mandelbrotmat It's funny though. After I read what you wrote for some reason my mind couldn't stop picturing this scene but with Tim Curry in his Rock Horror get up. It would of made for a completely different, although enteraining sequence. haha

  • He's dressed like a fairy, he's using a butter knife, and he's fighting and Liam Neeson, what did he THINK was going to happen?

  • Finally a movie in which Liam Neeson does not die.

  • @GeneralGrievous18 How about Schindler's List?

  • @GeneralGrievous18 I'm guessing you haven't seen his greatest movie ever: Taken.

  • @GeneralGrievous18 You might be thinking of Sean Bean.

  • @GeneralGrievous18 Not many know this but there's a sequel called "The death of Liam Neeson -uhm- I mean Rob Roy" :D

  • stabbing sword vs slashing sword. which is better?

  • @paolothemaster stabbing, faster and easier to thrust through a man, a slash could leave him alive.

  • @dmitriaceofspades i think slashing has high possibility of weakening your opponent and it has 1 slash 1 kill like katana

  • @paolothemaster Again, you have to his a moving target. Slashes are more dynamic then a stab. Like dmi said, stabing is quicker but I imagine you still need a potent enough blade. Jim Bowie of Bowie knife fame was stabbed by a guy named Wright with one of those wimpy short swords. Jim grabbed him and stabbed him back with his big F***ing knife and killed him instantly while Jim lived and became famouse.

  • I dont see this as a anti english film becuase both countries were united by the Act of Union. this film rocks

  • If you watch carefully, you'll see that Tim Roth parries all the time at the beginning of the duel. I'm into historical sabre fencing and I know for sure that rapier wouldn't help against a good slash.

  • I wonder how one parries a Scottish basket-hilt broadsword with a rapier...

  • @lysandermckain you don't have to. the small is too fast.

  • exellent work by willam hopps

  • Cheat

  • I find it the best ever screened fencing fight..

What i like the most is how fast people get exhosted fighting, unlike in most of other movies where a duel can last for a qute long and opponents are both dry and look fine. One more thing i admire here is how wearpon may make two totally different by weight and hight persons equal, a short and slim guy may win only being faster and having better skills.

The 3rd thing i like is a will to revenge and survive at any price..

  • rob roy was an idiot to pick such a heavy sword to begin with....makes him get tired faster.

  • @SumKindaNice It's a matter of training. He wouldn't've known what to do with a smallsword or rapier any more than a member of the nobility would've known what to do with a basket-hilted claymore. There are weapons far better than an M4 out there, but I'll choose it in a fight due to my effortless familiarity with it as a former Marine (not that a point-use sword is inherently superior to a broadsword).

  • tim reminds me off darth maul

  • The true story of htis duel is rather more of a drunken farce, even by Rob's own telling.

  • @Hawkathon Liam is a tall guy. If you watch any of the fight practice from his Start Wars role it's pretty clear.

  • How tall and/or how short are Tim and Liam? The part where Liam and Tim face each other, it looks like Liam is a good head taller than Tim. Is this true or is it just clever camera work?

  • @Hawkathon Liam is 6'4". Roth is short.

  • 5:48 WWWRRRRAAAAAHHH!!!

  • GREAT MOVIE

  • Tim Roth is pure evil in this film. Really good role and one of the best examples of a villian getting their comeuppance.

  • @yetanotherguitarist I so wish he was featured in more movies, hes brilliant in this. Maybe the best villian in any movie Ive ever seen.

  • I love his behind the back trick early in the fight, although I have no idea if that was an actual fighting move or if Archie was being an arrogant prick. Perhaps both.

  • erm you lot are looking too deep, to me the man won and hes the better man so its a good story

  • lol qui gon jinn ftw

  • "Dang Rob what happened to you?"

"You should see the other guy"

  • @JoeyJojoJrShabad0o You have a point, but the samurai were probably the best swordsmen in history. Also, they certainly made swords superior to any other.

  • @squamish4244

If you do a little research, you will find it to be untrue.

  • @Metalheadyup ? I have. Who else could be better?

  • Arrogance + massive sword = dead rapist.

  • Tim Roth used to be such a great actor - why is he doing Lie to Me now?

  • if he had used the force this would have ended sooner

  • @darkiddd

LOL, Agreed. 3:30 he's on his Jedi stance mode. It'll be a lot more epic if Qui Gon used his Lightsaber and the force, and Emil Blonsky there turned to his Abomination form.

  • dirty cheating scotsman !

  • samurai is better style this one sucks dick..

  • @ninjashadow400 lol @ samurai

  • owned

  • Whose bright idea was it to cast Liam Neeson? He's a fine actor, but the guy's way too tall.

  • wish Id had a few guineas on rob

  • worst MOVIE EVER

  • tryndamare > master yi

  • 5:45 = The best battlecry ever heard in cinema.

  • watch , learn , that is how a man fights!!!!

  • he's a great villen. i haven't watched the movie so have no idea how evil his character is written - but just the bits I have seen.....mean, sardonic, smart and with little self-pity.

and he's also got a soul.

  • @ThePeterKrpan I agree with 100%!

  • SPOILER ALERT

Do people not know that this scene is not about the swordplay but the personal drama with the characters ? Liam's friends have been killed, his wife raped and Tim Roth is the main culprit .

  • que mirada( 5:25) ..beutiful..

  • 1:21 ayyy hold my wig

  • noooooo, tim!:-(..

  • The duel scene is great . I heard in real combat during the war sabres proved to be better than rapiers.I heard sabres were brought to Europe by Tatars ( tribes living in present Crimea and Ukraine).Later sabres were adopted by eastern european (especially Polish ) cavalry making them the best cavalry in Europe.Later sabres were adopted by all cavalry forces in all Europe.I quess the reason is in war combat people dont have as much room to manouvre as during the duel

  • @garden2010city the rapier was never used in war. while the rapier was used in duels, the side sword or the long sword were used in war. that being said, the europeans also have curved swords; the messer, for example.

  • Qui-Gon learned all his lightsaber fighting skill from the scotsman here

  • at last a duel that looks real best ever finese v brute force. superb performance from tim roth.

  • Tim Roth take's him to the cleaners.

  • One of the best film duels! And Highland Broadsword won :-)

  • I usually dislike Tim Roth.....But in this film he was utterly fantastic as well as the incomparable Liam Niessen.

  • @JoeyJojoJrShabad0o Well said! Western codes of swordsmanship and honour of old were the match of any Samurai!

  • God he killed that fag!!

  • fuck that traitor, rob roy was the man ,english cunts, long live ireland.........yous did'nt get it all your own way......its not over yet.........eire nua.....

  • I saw an inerview with Roth once where he was asked about this performance. He said something like, 'They asked for an effete, decadent but viscious English fop. I gave 'em Terry Thomas. They seemed quite happy with it..'

  • You all don't seem to catch the whole concept of this duel. Tim is out to kill, Liam is there to survive. Tim uses a small sword(not dinky) and Liam has a heavy Scots backsword. In real duels the contestants weary quickly. Liam's character gets cut several times and unknown to tim will take the small cut in order to survive. Great, great choreography, great duel!

  • @theBarabarian Liam is here to kill, actually. The fancy pants here raped his wife. And the whole concept is clearly about Tim being a superior swordsman and playing with him like a cliche villain he is, until he finally screws up and gets chopped up.

  • @theBarabarian i disagree. liam is there to kill tim's character and wants nothing else. tim's character wants to humiliate liam before killing him (i've taken everything else from you, now i'm going to take whats left and leave you without even your life). tim's character is clearly the better swordsman, and is obviously toying with liam. tim's characters arrogance is his undoing. although, i will say, that the holding onto the sword like that would probably cause you to lose a finger or two

  • @theBarabarian You are spot on. Tim could never have seen "The Vikings" poor old Kirk falls for something similar from Tony Curtis !

  • RRRROAAA! :'D

  • Cunningham wasn't a so good fencer. A real good fencer stabs his opponent in the shortest time possible, he doesn't play with him.

  • @Miauriceful I guess that's what separates a good fencer and pyschopathic fencer.

  • @Miauriceful He was an awesome swordsman, but you are right that he toyed with his opponent, which is why he lost this duel. He was arrogant and proud and incredibly cruel. This is an amazing duel- I daresay the best I've ever seen in a movie.

  • @ShamusMacGuffin

You are right, this is a beautiful and a spectacular scene, but it isn't realistic. But this is a movie and it have to give to the public what it wish, while a realistic duel can't.

If you want see somithing close a real duel search on youtube some epee competition, but if you don't know nothing about fencing you'll don't like it.

  • where Barbaric will prevails over fancy shmancy swordplay. That's how you kill a dude that is such an asshole like he was. Let him know that the game is over.

  • 5:49 PWND!

  • Never underestimate us Highlanders, even wounded and breathless, we still come back and win the fight epiclly XD that stupid english guy should have finished Rob when he had the chance haha!

  • Archie should have won. the screenplay writer didn't do him justice and give him a proper ending. nobody that ruthless just stands still and allows himself to be cut in half.

  • @ThirdTwin3 Anyone can be taken by surprise, & his character would no doubt have been trained in the schools of fencing, but even the best trained can be beaten by the unorthodox. I think tho the story was based on truth, so the ending 'had to' happen the way it did.

  • @SlaineOz perhaps instead I should blame the choreographer. I'm pretty sure it's a true story too but with the amount of time Rob Roy (Liam Nesson) spent trying to grasp his sword as well as his grip on Archie's sword, which had the edge of the sword only against the soft palm and middle portion of his fingers, would have been relatively easy to cut through. He would have done better to pinch the flat of the blade and grasp it that way. so perhaps it should just be more convincing.

  • @ThirdTwin3 hmmm, that's true. Well observed.

  • @SlaineOz I do however think the rest of the fight is fantastic and possibly the best sword fight I've ever seen

  • @ThirdTwin3 I do agree that the sword fight is very good, & shows the difference between the rapier & broadsword to some extent. but there are other great sword fights too: such as in "The Hunted" starring Christopher Lambert (set in Japan, with japanesesword play), the beginning ofa recent James Bond film was also good, with a frenetic sword fight with medieval broadswords. There are others but I'm knackered & about to hit the hay.

  • @ThirdTwin3 You should keep in mind that Archie was far too arrogant for his own good and thus he underestimated his opponent. He let his guard down when instead of taunting his opponent he should have just finished it, but instead he ended up getting his blade grabbed and then got killed. He should have gotten the point when Robb was asked about quarter saying none will be asked. This should have hinted how determined Rob Roy was and that he needed to be more careful.

  • real highlander power

  • @666voltanaligern

Dam right, we're Awesome! XD........to be fair though England had its share of heros and stuff like Scotland too : )

  • The choice of weapons clearly shows the difference between a deadly Rapier and those clumsy medieval broadswords .

archie was very right in stating only to use a Claymore when he had to slaugther an Ox ..

  • @braviss

The problem with your statement being that the broadsword itself wasn't at all a clumsy weapon-- rather, in this scene, it's the wielder that was clumsy. You could see it in his movements, the way he reacted clumsily to Arche's feint.

That aside, the job of a claymore is different from the job of a rapier. A rapier bleeds a man slowly, a claymore strikes once or twice and puts down the opponent.

  • @Bhikshu2 Well comparing to a rapier you could say that a broadsword is clumsy because it is a heavier blade

  • @frimodig

Weight has nothing to do with "clumsiness", as you'd know if you cared about swordsmithing. The balance of the sword is far more important than its weight.

  • @Bhikshu2

So true! I have a claymore and schiavona, they are not light, but they are certainly not cumbersome.

  • @Bhikshu2 you're right the basket hilt claymore isn't clumsy, nor heavier. althought, i have to disagree with the rapier bleeds a man slowly. a rapier thrust is deadly. most of the rapier moves were designed to kill in the instant. second, this is not a rapier, i believe this a tranistion rapier or a early type of smallsword. third, archibald was toying with rob. thta's why he didn't kill it right away.

  • its good that there is no music during this fight

  • don't put a blade on a scotch neck.

  • that's what those english fags get for using those little wire swords. I'd gladly take a hand wound to grab the weeny blade and hack off a side of english meat. Especially if my life depended on it.

  • Epic duel.

  • отличная игра актеров,красивый поединок.

  • that is the best fight in cinematography

  • Jesus, people, please. STOP those comments with statements who and how fast would kill them both or what mistakes are made here! All your words simply shows that you don't get ry what the story is about. what is the concept of honor duel nor why it's one of the greatest swordfights in film history.

All you show is your overwhelming ignorance and inability to use arguments when you are stating anything.

    Stop. Please

  • @Myrth1 right on dude

  • @Myrth1 ----- You're the one who shows ignorance and inability to use arguments....and I agree with you!!! Your writing is terrible!

"Stop thoe comments with statements who.....? All your words simply shows...? Don't get ry what the story is about? What is the concept of honor duel nor why ...?" You don't complete a correct English statement past your first sentence!!!

  • Highlanders were the fiercest warriors you could summon to a standard. the fact that the ancient highlanders of the Caledonii and Maetae tribes stopped the Roman empire in their tracks proves this.

  • @sixnations2008

    HIGHLANDERS fierce?? lmao....

A INDIAN THUGGEE would have broken rob roy's neck

  • @losttribe obviously your knowledge about the history of Highland men is very limited. where might you be from?

  • dr. lightman vs qui gon. epic

  • Obi-Wan vs. Pianist

  • all warfare is based on deception - sun tzu ;)

  • qui gon jinn forgot his lightsaber

  • I have a similar situtation that Rob Roy faced in this scene. In this day and age it is not with a sword but with the mind. The uppity English treated the Scots like dogs. I too am being treated like a dog by one of the richest small town bullies I have ever dealt with. I may not have his money but like Rob Roy I have what the Scots had. I pray that I achieve what Rob Roy achieved in this scene.

  • @MaxVonStark

Cut him with your razor-sharp wit.

  • @MaxVonStark use your brain, man. use tactics, survival instinct, the will to overpower the other guy. develop.

if you think it´ll come to a physical confrontation, go & work out (e.g. at a gym) or learn some martial art (even the basics are usually efficient). and even if you won´t fight, you´ll get more self-confidence & new ideas how to overpower or outsmart him in another way.

if you are one with your body & your mind, no one can do anything to you. like a rock in the middle of the river.

  • @MaxVonStark

You should go to Japan, stayed there and emerged as a NINJA

  • such wonderful english dialog. William Hurt , Liam Neeson and a young Tim Roth was brilliant .My favorite from from the 90s

  • Tim Roth has Rob on the ground.... Rob reaches up .... "COOOOOMBO BREAKER!!!"

  • Tim Roth screwed up the fatality button code.

  • I guess Archie figured Roy didnt have anything left in the tank at the end there. He looked like he was caught off guard. Thatll teach him.

  • It should be a flawless victory for archie

  • hÎ_i_fÈÊl_sÕ_lÕNËlÿ_t0dÄY

  • Yet another reason why you don't fuck with Liam Neeson.

  • B.A.

  • Tim Roth would have been great cast as the evil Roman Emperor Caligula.

  • Comment removed

  • @johnhamilton08 about as shallow as you can get

  • Comment removed

  • It looks like Liam Neeson vs a child.

  • imagine how good archie wouldve fought had he not decided to wear his grandmas dress lmao...

  • Tim Roth is the best villain actor EVER!!!! he's such an asshole in every movie, and he enjoys every moment! he would be a great pirates of the Caribbean villain!

  • @BigJackFilms Mr pink was hardly an asshole.....

  • Dam I love Tim's character. He's electrifying to watch. So foppish and feminine and faggy and yet fights like an ice cold motherfucker. It's such a great dynamic, I don't think I've ever seen that dynamic before. Tim fights, and acts, circles around Liam in this scene. The way he stalks his opponent like a pychopath, eyes him up, figuring him out. The best character Tim has ever played, better than anything Tarantino ever wrote for him.

  • @BigBagsForRent

    Well described :)

  • simply brilliant

  • ZAJABISCIE!!!!!

  • that little archie cunt would fuck with me once and i would kick his CUNT.

  • @mrmakemaday shut up you midget

  • an amazingly realistic fight, considering it´s a duel with rules and not on the battlefield. it shows different stages:

    1. testing out the opponent: Archie relying on skill & speed, Rob using his brute strength & reach

    2. gettng familiar: Arichie trying to ennervate Rob, Rob trying to stay calm

    3. preparing the final blow: Archie knows he´s superior; Rob is breathless, wounded but still dangerous

    4. the death blow: Archie totally fucks that up, he waits too long; Rob´s chance, he takes it

    epic

  • @harpiyon check out various historical sword fight groups researching the rules and treatise of sword masters. Tim Roth fights in a way that is reminiscent of Vincenzio Saviolo or DeGrasse, possibly DaGrippa. Liam Neeson fights almost in a style based on George Silver. You'll find this fight scene is not only better than anything in star wars, it's based on actual historical fight techniques and the choreographers did a very good job.
