This reminded me of the earthquake a few months ago in the midwest...I live in Indiana and it was like a 5.4 or 5.5. I'm a seismologist. This could be real. There is certainly a P-wave followed by the S-wave, then by surface waves, and the timng of such would put him about 15-30 miles from the epicenter. BTW, our phones worked for about five minutes after the quake, then got jammed. It depended on where you were, and what service you had. I was able to make a few calls before the cell service crashed (which were for emergency services, since I was on duty)

1) It depends how far you are from the Epicenter, and there were only two main jolts (ergo about 10-20 seconds for the initial shock, then it was vibrating for about two minues after... mostly undetectable)

2) Cell phones weren't cut off, the companies were overloaded and many people were unable to place calls due to strain on the system, but people were still able to call
