We should build a church for the guy who just won the nobel peace prize. Or maybe name the whole country after him. For what he has done for our country, it would be a small price to pay.
I'm natively Russian. With a deep hatred towards Soveit Union. In 90s United States were a sort of beacon of the principles on which we wanted to build anew. Not everything has been accomplished. But now 10-15 years after, looking at this building naming tradition in US, and this portraits of presidents hanging in each bureacrautic office, what the fuck have you done to your country? Have you turned phylosophically into Soviet Union with the exception for better economic efficiency?
WHAT THE HELL?! I'm generally more liberal pro-government than not, but THIS is absolutely ridiculous!! Use your own fucking money to put your stupid egos on buildings, scumbags!
It's about time someone spoke out against it. Wait until they are dead and then do research on how much good they did for our country before you put their name on a building!
Unable to spell "worship," you've just proved my point. Let's have *more* cuts in education so even more Americans can acquire your so-called spelling skills. How disgraceful when an American can't even master his own native language!
I wasn't worried because I know you are really, really smart and you can spell worship. If that's as good as you can do then you are a douchebag. Plus, look at all the minus figures after all your statements. That should tell you something ...moron. (I think I spelled moron right, what do you think?)
I work in DC and I can tell you that money certainly doesn't guarantee good education. The highest spending in the country per student and the lowest achievement levels. He's right, the private sector does handle education better then gov't, and they can do it for far less money. Are you actually saying you don't support better schools that cost the taxpayers less? If so then I would assume you must've been educated at a public school.
Hey kbonez2. You're right about DC schools being absolute shit. However, it looks like the government has recently put into place a solution to that problem: Michelle Rhee. She's vowed to purge incompetent teachers and has already dismissed several principals and educators, as well as closed down a few schools. She treats education more like a business, and as a result, there could be significant improvements just over the horizon. (She also wants to get rid of tenure. THANK GOD!)
Yeah, I live in DC and have bee really impressed with her reasoned, logical approach to education. She has some great ideas, and yet she's had to fight an uphill battle at every turn because she's trying to change things for the better. Gov't institutions and unions hate to change because it threatens their stability. As for tenure, I'll never understand why anyone thinks that guaranteeing someone can keep their job NO MATTER WHAT is a good idea. Thanks for the post man :)
Well, to be fair, it's not like teachers have a job that's even remotely easy. And in light of how hard the good ones have to work, they really don't get paid that much. The problem is tenure basically ensures they don't HAVE to be good at the job (at least not for long), turning it into a game of "Who has internal drive?" rather than "Who wants to improve their finances?", the latter of which is the only real way to guarantee people will work hard.
Sure, their jobs are tough, and they don't make a ton of money. But most teachers make a pretty good living, well above the average earnings in the country. You hit the nail on the head. When you become a member of the Teachers Union it is nearly impossible to be fired, so there is no incentive to be great at your job. Look at how hard the TU has fought against giving people raises and bonuses based on performance. If one person works hard enough to get a raise they make the others look bad.
Frankly, a douchebag is a socialist minded weasel, who thinks it's the role of government to take our money and run our lives for us, and to care for us from cradle to grave, because we're too stupid to do that for ourselves.
Stossel is a Libertarian, and doesn't have those views. Get a clue.
danfg, no, I know the difference between liberal and Libertarian. Generally, liberals are douchebags, but all liberal positions aren't bad.
Remember that Libertarians and liberals agree that drugs, prostitution, and gambling should be legalized. Liberals have it right on many social issues, but when it comes to economics, they're socialist sacks of shit!
I agree Liberals and Libertarians have no differences, that is why liberals like market regulations and libertarians do not. That is why liberals like big governments and libertarians do not. Know what a libertarianism is and then talk.
dotLP, you must have me confused with someone else on here, because I never said Liberals and Libertarians have no differences. I'm a Libertarian and believe me, I know the differences.
If you were in the same room as me and put me in the same category as a socialist douchebag, I would bitch-slap the shit out of you kid. How's that for knowing what a Libertarian is?
dotLP, I've ran into a few "Socialist Libertarians" on here too. It's an actual philosophy. I'm not sure, but I think they advocate a socialist society, but with no government.
It's stupid, because like it or not, a government is necessary to have a peaceful, free society, but no more government that is absolutely necessary (unlike our government now.)
Yeah they're a strange lot. I've talked to one before and I tried pinning down what he actually believed in. Socialist libertarianism is the closest thing I could get it down to.
They're a lot like regular libertarians, but with a complete lack of understanding for how economics function and a lack of emphasis on private property.
most REAL libertarians(like ron paul) dont actually support legalization of prostitution and pot, just that it should be left to the states
and to your posts under yes my friend considers himself a "communist libertarian" where he believes that the government should equal out peoples classes then basically get the hell out from there
Gotta agree with genital on this one. Being a libertarian means NO government should impose itself on the peoples lives, whether that government be federal or state. Free markets should decide the course of actions. Ron Paul is certainly more libertarian then most politicians, but he's not a "true" libertarian as you claim.
I don't exactly agree with the lengths you're taking your statements, but I do agree with the implied sentiments of them. I'm a social liberal in many ways, but I'm definitely a conservative economist. I support the liberal ideal that people should try and help other people, but I don't share liberals faith that the government is the one who should be doing it. The gov't sucks at just about everything, why should we give them all our money in the hopes they can make our lives better?
I think the confusion arises because the terms have been switched over the years. You can read about it in Dan Baum's book Smoke and Mirrors, a detailed account of the drug war. Anyway, Stossel classifies himself as an old-skool liberal......just like Brian the dog on Family Guy. Catch it Sunday 7/6central on Fox!

How about this 'all buildings to be built using tax payer money need voter approval before they can be named after a living person.'
Exceptions being presidential libraries and maybe state colleges getting to decide what they name their buildings after.

Why would anyone name anything after a member of the parasite class?
Then again, maybe the "Robert Byrd Prison for Victimless Crimes" would work. Or the outrageously expensive "Ted Stevens Bridge to Nowhere".
