The idealistic vision of do-it-ourselves is unassailable. Trouble is, the socio-cultural-politico-economic context has led us down the road of hyper-dependence on pampering in every walk of life. Witness, the "personal trainer" a phenomenon symbolic of an epoch where everything is handed over to someone else, including daily care and feeding of our own bodies.
On the positive side, maybe gov20 can help nurture a DIY spirit where it's weak or non-existent now.
Ahh, but for every personal trainer, you'll find a "life hacker" or "DIY blog/tv show/book", micro-brewery, independent artist, independent technologist, etc, etc. We have more entrepreneurs and self-employed people in this country than at any point in the last 100 years.
I think govt as it currently is has evolved to a place where it simply can't change, not without a 3rd party or term limits at the national level.
Back when I was a teenager (I'm 40 now...egads!!!) I was part of the 'punk rock' scene of the 80's and early 90's. And part of its motto was "D.I.Y", which means "Do it yourself". Forget the big record companies, just put out a record through your own 'grass roots' funding. This is a mindset that people (U.S. citizens) nowadays might need to entertain.
@Brutus9000 it still IS a part of the punk rock community - and as far as I know it was that community that coined the term - check our MAXIMUMROCKNROLL to see how the scene is still thriving

Brilliant.
This "gov 2.0" idea with collective action is EXACTLY the kind of thing I'm talking about.
An "open source" government - great idea.
