The opportunity is there if someone really tries. I agree with the lack of minority scholarships but at the same time if a person really wants something they gotta work for it. I did, for ten years I was a soldier, I became a Ranger and from the time I enlisted, NOTHING was give to me. Every black, hispanic, asian, white person standing by me EARNED our paychecks. Also, its 2011, we need to look past slavery, not forget but move on. No one alive is a slave in the U.S. and I see it as a cop out.
Actually what any person can do is when they are eligible, get a job, a p.o. box and file their own taxes at 18. Usually teens earn a low wage and that is what the government would look at for the Pell. 2500 covered almost everything including room but not books when I went to Eastern Kentucky Univ. With a low interest loan, it covers everything. That gets a person out from under Mom and Dads income bracket and into a lower one. Its legal, I did it and covered what my G.I. Bill didn't. also

I attended both Johnson C. Smith University (freshman year) then transferred to Morgan State University (Both Historically Black Universities) and throughout the years at these schools I have witnessed absolutely nothing but foolishness, ignorant, womanizing, gang like behavior from these fraternities ESPECIALLY Omega Psi Phi. They are the worse. Me personally... I have no respect for any of those organizations and wouldn't be caught dead even socializing with people who carry on like that.

Black Fraterny & Sorority members graduate at a higher rate than non-greeks. hmmmmm I wonder why. Stepping is the least of our concerns. Charity, Sponsership, community support, education, literacy, voting, & surrounding yourself who has the same vision for themselves & your people are who make up these organizations. Not saying non-greeks don't. But being in the group, your more likely to be apart of those deeds
I simply do not understand how people can actually say that black greek organizations don't do anything but the steps and the strolls. Greek life unified African-Americans on college campuses when they were shunned by their white classmates. In fact, it still unifies people today. And these organizations promote a higher level of scholarship and community service. Most people who aren't in these organizations only see one view of it, yet they are so quick to condemn it. @Dbut31 You are partially right. But not all are involved with charity work, community outreach etc. On my campus there was a fraternity ATO. Our school requires each fraternity to do a community project each year to be allowed to operate, so they would do what ever half-ass thing they could to meet it. Meanwhile all over campus they where known as complete douchbags. They were eventually forced to close because they kept getting freshmen dangerously drunk, and even pre-freshmen visiting.

@neoSkye2012 yes i feel that alot of blacks are out of touch of their roots. I have had blacks ask me to speak african, or if i live in a jungle back home. This is 2011 where resources esp technology to americans is all over the place. it takes seconds to google if you're curious. Blacks have dismissed their roots as africans and lack knowledge of the rich culture in countries in Africa. Because of this lack of knowledge ignorance about past history is seen in the younger generation

@afrikanqueen687 Finally, someone who speaks the truth of it. The opportunities that are out there are endless for those who want to WORK for a living. T.V. and music has instilled the "get rich quick" mentality that black people think playing sports or rap music brings. Over the past 40 years scholarships have been dwindling based on two things the first is the income of the parents, and second is the reduction and removal of minority scholarships. For example when the average college course is between 700-1500 dolars, US Pell Grants have been reduced to 2500 per person. This causes significant problems.
@BaronNate Since the average income of most black house holds is no more than 65,000 per year, blacks rely heavily on scholarships to gain access to quality education. If you study the trends, you will find that the scholarship bench marks for income are set to 1950s levels and have not been assessed or modified to today's standards, thus factoring in cost of living with the modern income levels and college education.

I simply do not understand how people can actually say that black greek organizations don't do anything but the steps and the strolls. Greek life unified African-Americans on college campuses when they were shunned by their white classmates. In fact, it still unifies people today. And these organizations promote a higher level of scholarship and community service. Most people who aren't in these organizations only see one view of it, yet they are so quick to condemn it. I just don't get it.

@Dbut31 You are partially right. But not all are involved with charity work, community outreach etc. On my campus there was a fraternity ATO. Our school requires each fraternity to do a community project each year to be allowed to operate, so they would do what ever half-ass thing they could to meet it. Meanwhile all over campus they where known as complete douchbags. They were eventually forced to close because they kept getting freshmen dangerously drunk, and even pre-freshmen visiting.

This is 2011 where resources esp technology to americans is all over the place. it takes seconds to google if you're curious. Over the past 40 years scholarships have been dwindling based on two things the first is the income of the parents, and second is the reduction and removal of minority scholarships. For example when the average college course is between 700-1500 dolars, US Pell Grants have been reduced to 2500 per person. This causes significant problems.

If you study the trends, you will find that the scholarship bench marks for income are set to 1950s levels and have not been assessed or modified to today's standards, thus factoring in cost of living with the modern income levels and college education.
