I like how he says it's a memory hog needing 700MB RAM out of the box. Right when he said that I checked my windows computer and default need is 2GB RAM
Damn i wish i found this before ubuntu... this thing is my ubuntu setup with all my apps installled without using my time finding all my apps.love it...
Ok well i was wondering if I were to get one and say i wanted to download iTunes or something that does not come in Linux format only mac and windows witch format would I Use. And this goes to like all programs
I've been using PCLinuxOS 2011.6 with KDE for a while now because, personally, I believe it is better supported on the type of hardware I have, but I was amazed to find out how fast Pinguy OS 11.04 is, even in live CD mode.
This distro seems like it's freaking AMAZING!!! But I do have a couple questions. Will my system with 2 separate CPUs (not dual-core), 3GBs RAM, and an SCSI hard drive be able to run this comfortably? Also, the CPUs are 32-bit and have a clock rate of 2.4GHz. At the time (2004-ish I think) it was a beast, but now it's considered to be a computer with outdated (albeit powerful) hardware. Would it have a lot of driver issues? PS - the OS I'm currently on is Linux Mint 'Katya'
@pcpik3r Bodhi Linux (based on Enlightenment & Ubuntu) is ideal for older machines. I use it on my newer comp and its blazing fast, and lots of fun to customize. Minimum specs are 300Mhz cpu, 128mb ram, and 1.5GB hard drive space. Awesome distro.
@pcpik3r Full instructions to get wifi working (just in case it doesn't initially) is the Google search result that comes up for: Wireless interface - Bodhi Linux Wiki (it's on their website). I was very very new to Linux when I first tried this, and worked just fine. :-) But it could just work without having to do anything to. I have a newer netbook and it worked right away with that.
@pcpik3r i dont really recommend xubuntu/lubuntu cuz its not too customizable. I really think u should at bodhi linux because its even lighter than LXDE (what Lubuntu uses) and its way better looking and super customizable and fast.
I'm considering Pinguy OS since for some reason, Linux Mint just won't download. I can't even get into the Live CD. I click to start it, and it just gives me a black screen with the disc still turning.. so waste of my time, not bothering that anymore.
Only issue I have is, I use Ubuntu but I've been looking for an alternative.. is this a good alternative? I'm not necessarily a newbie.. I don't want to use an OS intended for early early beginners
Looks like pinguy os is great for new users. but its not the kind of os i can reply on when it come to 3d editing with super speeds and to me some apps are missing or configured differently. Maybe its just me.
@HazardousDarkNinja Ah I see. So what is it about those two that put this above and beyond Pinguy? I know I could simply try them, but I'd also like to hear what others have to say...it helps me make my decisions about things I'm unsure of. I ask especially because the bloke in the video mentioned that it comes with pretty much everything one would ever need. So that, to me, sounds like a complete package. But I'm probably wrong, hence me asking lol
@dhwand Umm, I think it might even be a wallpaper from OS X leopard. Maybe try searching 'black and white pier wallpaper os x' and see what comes up, or google up the 'OS X Leopard wallpaper pack', that should turn up the right kind of results....good luck!
I've been watching your videos all night finding the best distro for me, I think this is it. only problem is, I hate the mint menu, is there a way to change it to be like Gnome from ubuntu 10.04? I feel more comfort with that menu style, thanks in advanced
I'm blown away just by watching your video, this distro is awesome. I'm trying to decide between pinguy and fedora. Pinguy is so utilitarian and brilliant but Gnome 3 is so clean and sharp it makes me want it. what's your insight on both of them? can pinguy be customized to look as good as fedora?
@migue97 That is a really tough choice. Although Pinguy can look nice, Gnome Shell is definitely slicker, and there's no real way you can imitate the Shell in Pinguy. Having said that, the apps and settings on Pinguy are much easier to get going with. Fedora would require a lot of tweaking to get it to the same point of usability. I would personally go with Pinguy, but your mileage may vary...Good luck :-)
I've been running this on my Win7 laptop in VMWare Player and liking it a lot. It isn't bad on the 15" screen. I'm thinking this will be taking Ubuntu's place on my desktop with the 22" monitor. Very nice distro.
Just installed the newest pinguy 11.04. If you go to firefox and restore bookmarks there is a list of previously backed up bookmarks(included with the OS from install it looks like). If you restore the 12/05/10 or the 01/06/10 bookmarks under the video folder there is all kinds of porn sites bookmarked. Atleast this happened on my new install guess that is a hidden feature lol
@YourUbuntu Yep, that is a common issue. Just go to the menu, type 'conky', launch the app, and select the appropriate option to 'fix' that issue. Good luck. :-)

@BloodyRevolution1 Good question. Uhh...it depends really. Nearly all of the distros that I review either get at least a live session for about a day, and some of them I run for a whole week before giving them a review. So whatever works best for me, I'll tweak, then use it for a while, make an image, then install something else, and repeat the process. Where do you think all the excellent Ubuntu-derivatives like Mint, Pinguy, Elementary, etc, go once Gnome 2.32 hits end-of-life? It's great that people who don't want to go the Unity route have options, but many of them are just as turned off by Gnome 3 (specifically the Shell). As Ubuntu diverges further and further from other Gnome distros, ignoring the upstream and developing for itself, any thoughts on how distros like Mint and Pinguy cope with the transition?
