@alasanof The PC-98 games were published by a company called "Amusement Makers", which ZUN worked for. He left the company, then started making his own Touhou games for Windows in 2002, but I think he ran into problems with licensing some of the previous characters (which were even his own creations). Ah, the troubles of licenses...
ZUN apparently has formal musical training in certain instruments, and in others, he is largely self-taught. I think his abilities in composing are also mostly just him playing what "Feels right," or at least that's the vibe he gives away in his interviews.
Well, yeah. He mostly composes on the computer and with a cheap keyboard plugged into his computer. It's a cheap one because it doesn't need to be fancy, it just needs to work (he actually said that in an interview, while showing off the room he programs and composes in).
Unfortunately, while it was English subbed, it got taken down because of copyright complaints. There is a Spanish one, though. It is shorter than the original, for whatever reason; but here's part 1. The room he's in at 9:07 is the room he programs Touhou in, as well as where he keeps many books on different world Mythologies, and a single book on Beer. It goes pretty in-depth on how the culture around Touhou has grown.
I just mentioned it because it's under a stack of books; the stack was about 20 different books on myth, like "Common Chinese Spirits," and "Ancient Folklore of Japan," and stuff like that. And then on the bottom, was a single book on the world's 500 greatest Beers (if I remember correctly, it may have been 100).
@mstrswrd Such is the sign of a true artist. He doesn't overthink what he's doing, he just merely keeps attempting it until he finds that one tune that enchants us as players and listeners of ToHou.
@the description, ZUN definitely has knowledge of music theory. His music is WAY too complex and layered to just be random. Also, I'm pretty sure he was a composer before he was a game designer.
I want to say that ZUN does have at least some knowledge of music theory. I was looking at sheet music for Immortal Smoke one day, and he was following correct chord order throughout the entire thing and even followed correct rules of minor chords. I'm sure there's plenty of times where he doesn't follow typical voice leading rules, but he seems to at least be aware of them.
i came back here to say: SCORE SHEET PLEEEEASE!!!!!!!! :<

Such a lovely tune. Refined, yet with something wild lurking beneath the surface. Much like anyone in Touhou who wears a maid outfit...
Bhikshu2 10 months ago
@Bhikshu2 Indeed. For Sakuya, at least, there is most definitely something lurking underneath the surface...

0 dislikes? I guess it's either too epic, or Yumeko got to them in time...

@mstrswrd YEp but this is obviously not ZUN and he composes with the computer directly... mostly.

"A single book on beer" He doesn't show his love for beer with books, rather with whacky spellcards.
