  • This is professional drumming at its best.

  • The only drummer alive today that I could remotely compare Buddy to would be Jojo Mayer. They both have insane technique and creativity, nobody (not that joke of a drummer barker, or lars ulrich), or any other crappy drummer of the sort could even be categorized as a great drummer compared to Buddy or Jojo.

  • thank you (ranypurdude) and travis barrker kicks ass needs to get out of here

  • yeah..this is what drumming is all about..passion, precision, power, creativity and technical mastery.buddy is the man.period.

  • yo all these dudes that keep on saying travis barker is better than buddy are smoking some heavy shit or are just plain stupid and will suck at drums for eternity

i am fourteen and im better than travis at all he does

  • coz your a fucking poser wannabe

  • NOW I HAVE TO FUCKING QUIT! god dammit!

  • dude have you heard of travis barker? check him out he is pretty fucking great

  • Yes, I have heard of him, unfortunately. I think he is up in the top 10 worst drummers out there. No offense to you if you like him though.

  • this is interesting to me. the recording i have of buddy rich's westside story, is different than what it is at the start of this one...hmm.

  • tell me you really aren't stupid

  • fuck no, im just saying, i havent heard this particular version. i have the shorter more condensed version.

  • So today I'm back for my daily fix of this amazing piece of 25+ YEAR OLD MUSIC HISTORY.

Intrigued by Mr. 69s comment I checked out 2 Goulon videos, metal solos 1 & 2.

Can anyone say "Double pedal"? Totaling about 7 minutes, I personally couldn't find 5 seconds of groove, swing, soul or anything else. A ton of feet and a wall of cymbals, a typical modern chops guy. Not even sure if I saw the chops.

  • your retarted goulan would eat him up so wpould kolias dumbass do some fucking reserch you noob

  • It's always an honor and pleasure to hear from Travis's mom! You must be so proud of your son....and such a breathtaking command of the King's English!!

  • soooo stupid. man, go cop a clue please

  • Rich is good, but he dont have shit on Romain Goulon.

  • Buddy Guy was a complete freak of nature. Not only did he start young as a child prodigy with his own touring big band before his adolescent years, AS HE GOT OLDER HE GOT FASTER! I don't mean like, into his 20's older. Like into his 60's and 70's he got astoundingly faster. He continued to do so up until the day he died! There will never be anyone like Buddy Rich. He is the incontrovertible, undeniable, and irrefutable father of percussion and the greatest drummer who has ever existed.

  • Sorry accidentally hit the down rather than up thumb. Doh!

Agreed - and the real nasty is the shifts in time signature for west side story. His muscle memory must have built it's own timing too. Although I think he was more of a technical player rather than being able to invent a new grove inline with new music.

  • Buddy Guy is a blues guitarist.

  • You are correct sir. My bad! It I'm not sure how I happened to overlook that typo, and didn't make it later on in the comment.

    :-P

Nevertheless, Buddy Guy is also a phenomenal musician. Buddy Guy and Buddy Rich are both among the most innovative and profound musicians of the 20th century.

  • buddy guy? lol

  • This is about the 20th time I've watched this in the past week.

I just jumped out of my seat at the end and gave him a standing O!

  • radicaldreamer420 that is the truest comment i have ever heard on youtube ever i pay you my respects for seeing the trueth no body beats buddy, no one!

  • He's a genius.

  • Aqui Buddy se rfio el fisico, ¡ Impresionante !.

  • I'm intrigued by the fact that Buddy was using an electric bass player, not an upright bass player, for this. The solo is astonishing.

  • holy shit, that guy can play

  • We can all say what we want, but REALLY watch that (if your a drummer) MY GOD!!!!!! I dont care how much i practice, I can NEVER be CLOSE! even that last "simple" fill was a 3 pattern. Todat a "3" pattern is BAD ASS lol

  • be gone...

  • How can anybody intelligent possibly say anything derogatory about Buddy Rich's drumming. As a person Buddy Rich was an egotistical, bad tempered, snappy little kike(if you'll pardon my racist language), but as a drummer - Well, as a jazz drummer on a drum set there's never been anybody better and probably never will...

  • Travis Barker? The guy from blink 182? are you fucking kidding me? and lars ulrich, the guy who thinks beating a snare like a hobo beating a trash can lid is worth recording? If anybody in rock could bring it to Buddy Rich it would be Neil Peart, and even he is put to shame by this. stop listening to what the radio and your lame high school friends tell you to and go find REAL music.

  • Amen! To even mention guys like Travis Baker and Lars Ulrich in the same sentence with Buddy Rich is ridiculous and dumb. I haven't yet seen or heard another drummer play even close to what Buddy could play in terms of technique, sense of time, feel, etc., and (unfortunately) I've been around for a while.

  • Can I get a witness! RadicalDreamer hit it HEAD ON!

  • Man! From 4:15 to 4:17, i can do that!!! :)

But watch how he accelerate!!! I saw no one do this!

    From Brazil!

  • Harcore old school raw passionate drumming right here. It's an old cliche, but they really don't make them like this anymore. I can't find a drummer alive today who has this combination of speed, raw talent, passion, work ethic, control and excitement. Pit Buddy against any drummer who ever lived in the middle of an every day crowd, and that crowd will gravitate toward Buddy every time. Simply the best ever, without a doubt.

  • so good ...

  • 2.20 he fucks up and looks like he is going to kill someone!!

The ultimate professional nothing but the best was ever good enough

  • Starts at 1:08.

I can't even count the number of times I listened to this in high school with a practice pad in front of me, wishing I could do it too.

  • Buddy Rich "Greensleeves" 1970

  • I miss Buddy...

  • Thank you!

  • no-one should pay attention to "travisBrulz' he's just an ignorant kid...he does this at all BR vids...he's not funny, witty or clever...just dumb...

  • And anyway, you don't, and surely won't be seeing Travis Barker memorials.

  • He is a crack head, travis is meirda! He is fucking shit. without buddy, there would be no travis barfuck

  • travisBrulzz, are you an idiot?? you must not know anything about Buddy Rich. travis barker can only wish he could play as good as Buddy

  • this is my favorite solo of buddys

  • You just said what may possibly go down as being the stupidest thing ever typed. I highly doubt jumpbox3 meant that buddy went into punk ROCK mode. I'll have to admit, Travis is probably the best punk rock drummer. The only thing is that isn't saying a whole lot. Buddy could still play circles around him.

Best jazz drummer > Best punk drummer

  • your still doing this stupid shit? get a life man...

  • just watched this yet again... is it me or is buddy in punk mode for this solo.. either that or something has pissed him off real bad.

  • Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich are two of the great icons of percussion. To this day rock drummers use their innovations and styles. Krupa INVENTED most of the equipment used by drummers today, and Rich INVENTED techniques that are still used by drummer today. They in turn were influenced by Baby Dodds, the first great percussionist and drum kit player of all time. (Invented the floor bass (kick drum) Check them all out, theyre as great to listen to now as they were back then.

  • 5:04... just look at his dexterity

  • the drummer really makes tha band bc they work tha hardest

  • i love the sound of his snare

  • This might be the greatest solo by the greatest drummer who ever lived. Its got everything -- every kind of rudiment, every numbered-stroke roll, probably the fastest and most even single-stroke roll ever. Wow. Thanks for the post. From a Rich fan.

  • How deceptively easy he makes it look. Just fanfuckingtastic.

  • i wonder if tommy lee can do this!!buhahahaha!!

  • Amazing. R.I.P. to the best drummer.

  • he looks like hes having sex with his snare

his solos are so good you can have sex to it

  • 4:17 - someone in the audience starts to clap thinking the solo is over and gets shushed by the band :- )

Buddy knew how to run a tight ship

  • He's amazing.

  • (Throws down drum sticks) whats the fucking point!!!! huff

  • i like ur humor.. i'm saying the same thing rolf

  • i would say buddy rich is the best jazz drummer alive, yes, that is true, but i really think mark portnoy takes the cake

  • Sorry, but the Mans Date of Death: April 2, 1987

  • i meant to say was sorry lol.

  • fookin' tight to the extreme.

  • The best drummer in the world.

    RIP Mate.

  • That snare sounds so tasty!

  • makes u think how good buddy would have been had he actually practiced

  • 3:34-3:38 when he goes from roll to flams and back to roll, man, that's insane... but hey it's Buddy so it's no surprise he can do whatever...

  • Amazing Drummer.

    The king

  • possibly the sexiest snare in history?

  • change the discription to "pornografic scene: buddy rich has sex with his drum set"

  • milde himmel :)

  • Man he loves that snare drum!!!

  • Yeah ... and it sounds great!

  • Buddy is Immortal

  • huh

  • his cymbals are very musical....like the pitch and all....at 0:23 - 0:26 the hats just seem to fill the gaps pefectly....pitch wise

  • so crisp O____O

  • fuck if i hear the name Travis again in a buddy, smith, weckl video i am gonna buy a pair of marching sticks....then start hitting people

  • It looks so easy when he does it... So fluid. That's when you know they're the best. When an impossibility looks simple XD

  • Are these his Ludwigs or Slingerland. They appear to be Ludwigs. Anyone know? Brilliant no matter what.

  • Never be another!!!!!!!!!!

  • best of the best doin his thing!

  • the best

  • Just the BEST,so easy

  • not exactly his best West Side Story, but light-years better than anyone else. outstanding!

  • That's a good point -- even when Buddy was playing a bit below his Super Human, Mount Olympus standard, he was still the Best.

But, he was human, indeed. I saw him at George's in Chicago and he had a raging cold. It was freezing outside, and his bus was parked right by the entrance to the club.

He came in, played the 1st set, took a break, then did the 2nd set, got up, drapped a towel over his head and went into the bus.

He was sick as a dog, but his playing that night was absolutely superb.

  • awesome

  • at 4:59... oh wow

  • this is live sound

  • :O

    brilliant

  • ooooooooooooooooooooooo snap!!!!!!!!!!

  • Those flams on 3:35! WOW..Even the band is captivated!

  • wank*r

  • cmon, he's just joking :D

  • I think when we all die, it's Buddy Rich that we're going to see, not the other guy........what's his name?

  • I don't think meeting the other guy would make me feel so inadequate!

  • man we talk about rich's solos ( which are unreal) but holy shit can he ever swing a band....

  • This has got to be one of, if not the best drumming video ever! :D

  • 1:20. I hear some Sing Sing Sing :P The man's a bloody genious.

  • all the other musicians besides buddy look like kids below the age of 21! college kids! wow....i wish i was as talented

  • I wanna be as good as him...I just don't know how.

  • me too!

  • Is that Buddy Rich playin'?, no thats GOD, he just thinks he's Buddy Rich!

  • Rich, the best i ever saw or heard, good on you Buddy

  • Can someone tell me if this is related in a way to the "Westside Story" play? Why is this performance called like this?

  • It is the solo Buddy performed during the medley his band played from the film "West Side Story."

  • Thanks duder :)

  • The songs from the play - and movie - that were in Buddy's medley, arranged by Bill Reddie, were:

Overature, Cool, Somewhere, and Something's Coming.

  • Thanks a lot brothas!

  • Simply, the best drummer of all time.

  • Without a doubt !! The Best.

  • the greatest drummer who ever lived

  • Without a doubt !! The Best who ever Lived !!

  • Were is all this material being found?

  • AWSOME! Thx moresco63! What year was this performance?

  • I think is 1982.

  • Yes, Montreal Jazz Festival 1982.

  • Nice.

  • aguante el viejo viteh

  • Top of the line.

    Nobody can play like Rich.

He could waste anyone behind a set of drums in my opinion.

  • wish he was still alive today to waste some of these modern drummers

  • Even dead he still is better than 99.99999% of these modern creeps.
