Maybe reword that a little bit?

  • Im using Ubuntu and Opera Browser!!

  • Windows>Ubuntu>Mac - no doubt.

  • Comment removed

  • Great video! I've been using Ubuntu for a while now as a more secure envierment to make hard drive backups but I can't seam to find a way to bridge my network connection like in Windows 7. Do you know of a good way to do this?

  • @1RxSunset1 you mean your network connection by wifi? btw what Ubuntu version are u using?

  • it's firebreast

  • My Favorite Open Source Programs:

    #1: Blender

    #2: GIMP

    #3: Firefox

    #4: LibreOffice

    #5: VirtualBox

I wish i had Linux :( but I'm not allowed to download it currently :,(

  • OMG IM ON FIREFOX WATCHING THIS!!!!

    INCEPTION!

  • Sopa = gf open source :c

  • To me it seem that firefox used to many resources so i switched to chrome

  • it not Firefox or ie there loads of over browses out there

  • how still uses Firefox i sorry chrome and chromium are the best for me

  • mmmm. Love you Nixie!

  • Ubuntu is #1

  • I need a girl like you. Smart and sexy. Sadly I am in Germany so its either or :S

  • I use SuperOS, It,s Ubuntu but easier, and thanks for this share, keep it up! Luv ya'll :P

  • open office sucks balls can't open large power point files for shit

  • not even ur hotness will get me to use linux, linux sucks

  • I love you i tried ubuntu, and it's weird i disliked when i used it .. but after a while when i went back to windows i didn't feel at home anymore but i have to to do it to play my games and what i do find annoying is how the Linux installs itself :D and ubuntu isn't what it used to be ^^

  • A few more details about Open Office, and better Libre Office, it can also interface with database systems, and has it's own built in mini MySQL database. Plus, you can import and export PDFs.

  • Does anyone that develops open source programs get paid for all the work the put into it? I'm not going to continue on programming for a career if you cheap entitled people think the hundreds of hours I put into programming something should be free.

  • @TarousDT is that a serious question?? Do you think people that work for Mozilla don't get paid? what about people that work for Red Hat, or Ubuntu, or Chrome - Free is free as in freedom to modify - yes it may be free for download as in Firefox's case however Firefox generates a TON of revenue via the Google search widget in the browser - cheers

  • where is open source legs?

  • Hey, you have a bad pixel over your right eye near the nose bridge. Sucks. hopefully you can live with it without replacing the unit. ;)

  • I love Open Source f*** windows

  • 0:00

  • I like XFIre for chatting

  • audacity for audio editing.

  • I like Eclipse, SciTE, GNOME 3, Firefox (forever), VLC, Inkscape, Blender, GIMP, and the Linux distro Fedora :P

  • @isaac18490

Whoa didn't know people like GNOME 3.I don't see how anyone can, it is such as mess and a huge step back from 2.

  • Since I haven't explored recording programs yet (for recording music) I would have to say ubuntu (and open office) since I havn't had use yet for video editing (music video that is) but when I get my recording studio going (hopefully in 3 years) I will then better be able to answer this question since ubuntu and open office are the only 2 that I have tried, besides centos that I'm trying to get going for my server.

  • ONe of my favorites is Bluefish. its a FOSS alternative to adobe dreamweaver. Love Libre Office as well. [All of open office's developers jumped ship to create libreoffice after openoffice was bought out by oracle].

  • Nice list os opensource programms!

  • how i go back to win7 from ubuntu help =(

  • linux is not friendly.it is too much complex , not easy to use.do i have to be a programmer or computer expert for listening to music or surfing on web? i serached some linux command on web and oh my God! all those codes (-l -a etc) are used in C programming language... i have no idea about what C is! so first of all i must learn programming in C to use linux,as i can see: linux is not complete, you have to build some missing parts for a useful operating system, i am not saying: linux sucks btw

  • @moxoloxom expert in programming OMG ? im not and i use both linux and windows ...... ....its easy if you can read SIMPLE tutorials

  • @Cobac good for you but... every tutorial confused me more, but now i found a very good SIMPLE tutorial for Mandriva and i will follow the tutorial step by step, i hope i will success because i really wonder what the linux world looks like...

  • @moxoloxom What version of linux are you using? Try mint, it's gotta be one of the most user friendly *nix's I know of. With the GUI you don't need the command line. It's more like windows then windows is... LOL then learn the package manager, then you have access to tons of freebies..... no command line needed

  • @mrRhwalden i tried ubuntu, thank you for your advises , i have found a beautiful tutroial about Mandriva, i guess i will try Mandriva 2011, i hope this time i will success ;-)

  • linux sucks in audio/video enviroments. windows 98 work better with audio/video than linuz alsa. linux with audio n videos is a big shit.

THE PROBLEM IS LINUX USER DNT KNOW NOTHING ABOUT TECH. THEY THINK BECAUSE WRITE SUDO THEY KNOW EVERYTHING IN COMPUTER WORLD!. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. NO WAY!

  • not all open source are open or free. Pls! Dnt Tech bad!. many "open source" is owned by corporations, they want money. u only cant read the code, not touched. With "free Sw" they want Donations(money). os based on linux liked ubuntu u need pay for licences when is using for commercial use in server enviroment when u using layer 3. ubuntu is the worst u have 3 corporation there, canonical, launchpad n transmeta. linux mint is better n is "free sw".

  • of course any sw better than adobe products!. adobe sucks!

  • The funny things about "open source" is many sw are mede in windows, almost all user manual are made in microsoft office. ubuntu user manual, open office , libre office the user manual was made in office 2003 n 2007. very funny. right or ironic?.

  • u wrong msn ie8/9 isnt bad browser u must set up well first to use then. mozilla also need advance set up to work well, i use mozilla, but more opera! opera know is the best browser than mozilla n ie8/9. the older netscape is known as Ie 7/8/9.

  • yeah baby go open, open ur legs!. linux sucks n u know it!.

  • open source?

    u unemployed, brah?

  • Is the a program on Linux equal to iTunes to use with an iPod?

  • my godness !

  • office libre

  • hey, who knows of an open source program that works like fireworks and flash?

  • @1jurosado I would recommend Gimp and Synfig

  • very good suggestions but for the browser choice i would still recomend Opera

  • thx about open office i never heard of it before. oh and linux i hear is really good but... windows is the best because of soooo many compatible programs with it while linux hardly has any thats why windows still holds over 80% of the market

  • @chillipepper117 and the reason why windows has more compatible software choices is because it owns most of the market, its a viscous cycle. : (

  • @egreen1989 ....i know that's why it's so good and to all you linux fanboys i am not saying linux sucks it is awesome i just like windows more

  • @chillipepper117 i recommend LIBRE office , same thing as open , same developers jsut libre is their current project and has another format called DOCX which is microsoft office word format the standard .

  • @chillipepper117

Well with OpenOffice(and now Libreoffice) you can simply set it to open in Microsoft Office if you have to e-mail it to someone else. It's just a free alternative to Office. Compatible wise, you can install WINE or a Virtual Box for Windows. Either way, both are good.

  • I'll second that!

  • ahh, is it Mozilla Firefox?

  • 75 % use windows Explorer? Bullshit! People, even corporations, know that explorer suck compared to other browsers

GIMP is free and that is awesome. But IMHO GIMP is also clumsy, window system sucks, it is frustrating to work with and if you thought Photoshop was hard to understand, GIMP takes that even further. I really wish GIMP would be as good as PS, but as it is now, it is not. And that is understandable. It's open source! GIMP does not have well-paid engineers 24/7 developing the program.

  • @Wistbacka corporations often use Internet Explorer because they use multiple Microsoft services (think SharePoint or an Cloud service).

  • Well done. What is often not enough highlighted is, that Open Source- or Free Software is not only (not even always) free in the meaning of free beer, but in the meaning of free speech. Therefore the main advantages are higher security by a broader base of reviewers, more flexibility by easier realisation of add-ons and for those, who are able to do it, by the possibility to make changes to fit their needs.

  • oh a reverse light-saber !

  • At 3:55 this haircut is very modern and fits to her very much, I think that she should keep it as the default :)

  • Nice wallpaper! Got to love Compiz!

  • #1, Chrome

#2, Libre office, it's pretty much the same thing but newer version :D

    #3, Gimp is awesome C:

#4, pigeon on the fly :P

    #5, kdenlive is AMAZING!!!

#6, VLC, the best video/ music player

#7, and the best one in my opinion, BLENDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe she didn't include that :C, it is the perfect alternative of 3ds max, maya, zbrush, and after affects combined!!!!!!!!!! :D

  • @ehabcharek Good, but at 7, you mentioned After Effects, witch you can use with Blender, 3dsmax, etc., but Blender alone cant do shit without After Effects, It pretty much a whole different thing.

3d Program: Make 3d animations or objects. You can make an animation and export the animation file into AE

After Effects: Implement them to your graphic designs and or videos in a timeline type format, you don't model 3D in here..

I know a lot about After Effects but cant seem to use 3D programs..

  • @Akeuw

do you know about the node editor that is build-in in blender?

because it can do miracles in any video ,and sometimes pictures :P. For example, you can make a green screen effect with it (that's a simple example), or annoying orange effect, but seriously if you learn more about it, it would be fun to work with and can do things that you might no think that could be done with such a program

  • @ehabcharek I would like to learn, but to use it with After Effects. But After Effects is just meant for that stuff, and it has been a good 10 versions of the program, up to cs 5.5, so you can imagine its evolved as a video program, and it does great with video. Mask, Expressions, the organisation meant for video, basic editing tools, tools work to add explosions that actually light up the scene, etc, you cant replace that. I don't see why Blender to fully replace AE, even with what it can do.

  • @Akeuw

I totally agree with you, but everyone has his own opinion, and personally I don't know how to use after effects :P, so I just use blender because I'm used to it. (and by the way, all of what you've mentioned could be done in blender, just sayn' :P), but don't forget also that blender has been around since 1980's so it's pretty old

  • @Akeuw

and if you want some tutorials on blender's node editor, there is a new channel that was created by a guy who uses blender to make videos that could be done in after effects (mostly node editor)

    here's his channel:

    youtube.com/user/BlendThatFilm

  • @ehabcharek I am impressed with what Blender can do, but simply put, After Effects can do a little more and do it faster. Movies are all about the time and how fast you work with it. After Effects also uses the time efficiently, because it doesn't only work wonders with video, it has been everything is right there, in a tight work space. Again, simply put if you spend the money (or not...) on After Effects, you wont be needing Blender, but Blender works fine too.

  • @ehabcharek Blender perfect alternative? Nope, no way ... Blender is better than those by far. ;) It's like having a construction crew while the others are Legos.

  • @ehabcharek BLENDER RULES!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Inversions51

    yes, yes it does

  • Can I say I don't know just to stay after class?

  • I am the greatest dancer in the fucking world.

  • I think my favorite open source program would have to be Mozilla Firefox... out of all the others I've downloaded and loved, I guess I'm a sucker for my first. I started using Firefox as a suggestion from my Bro-in-law (sister's husband), but even that was before I knew what open source was. Now, if I can find an open source substitute for something I am supposed to buy for class, I use the heck out of it! Dia is one, and has saved my butt a few times--lets you create diagrams (hence the name

  • Km Player is Best video player

  • Informative - a little over-zealous. The Gimp is remarkable for an open source program but, uhm, it's not Photoshop. I use both, with regularity.

  • On Windows paintnet is much closer to photoshop, pretty much unless your are doing something professional

  • What's the point of having open source text processors when you can have a cracked pirate office pack, windows 7, games and else?

  • @lucasricardofolco Use your imagination. Liberate your mind.

  • @lucasricardofolco Re: Why not just have a cracked MS office and windows and games, --

well some computers cant run windows 7 and some people like the added security i dont know

just cuz man just cuz its LEGAL probobly and knowing your computer has COMPIZ too < i like that part haha

  • I love me my open source software!!! The only thing I do, however dislike is OpenOffice & LibreOffice. It's fine for doing quick letters and such, but most of the time I DO prefer to run office 2007 in a virtualbox.

  • LibreOffice!!!

  • i use mac S mi 2 OS anything for Linux and mac :)

  • You forgot to mention the shitload of malwares that are included when you download those stuff. And when they're already installed, they keep on downloading automatically until you have no more disk space left.

  • @ponkadolz Open-Source stuff rarely have malware. Are you new to the Internet?

  • The only Linux I'm familiar with actually using is Red Hat during the year 2000.

At that time all people at work were interested in were the servers and not the OS.

I took two classes at a community college to learn how to use it and I agree that Linux is pretty amazing. Now that there are many new versions of Linux out I might try them again on my old computers :)

  • lol i have almost all of those, also my younger brother Justin helped create pidgin haha =) sorry for all my replies, just scanning through your videos =)

  • When will LibreOffice have all the features there are in MS Office 2010 :P?

  • @Jarzka1990 u can have office 2010 online for free... all u need is a hotmail account...At least that is what i read...

  • @jbingfaII No, it's a trial version.

  • @Jarzka1990 Trial Version of What? What is the name of the Program used to create these effects?

  • i wish you could like more than one time!

btw i knew every single program you mentioned but can i still stay after class LOL JK

  • @exposed97

I've seen an article in a magazine about installing android on a pc. So, it is possible.

  • I have never heard of KDenLive before now! I wish I would have discovered it before the HDD on my Linux computer stopped working :(

  • I dont know why but readhead geeks are extremely HOT,HOT,HOT

  • @exposed97 It is..In some TOSHIPA laptops

  • OS the best Ubuntu Natty - browser Chome/omium ! Tank you Canonical, Tank you Google !!! THE BEST !!!

  • What do you guys think about companies like Talend that basically take free software, "enhance" it - and sell it? Doesn't this pervert the idea of free software? Since the community does the programming for free - and those company make money selling the software.

  • @ubu2727 I don't think so, where in the agreement does it say you cant make money off it? The company does not have to show you their code that they added on to it because they own that code, but they should direct you to a link that leads you to the open source code. As long as , the open source code is available for the open source community, their is no crime. If the company decided to license the open source part of the program, then we have a problem.

  • @ubu2727 My main problem with the licensing of code is the fact that one day I might develop a program similar to lets say Steve jobs code. Steve Jobs could sue me over it and that would be weird because I never seen his code to steal it, I just came up with a similar solution. That's a interesting scenario that I never thought about till Richard Stallmen brought it up.

  • Respond to this video... I guess a good Example would be if Mac company sued Microsoft because they come up with the Gui before Microsoft did, but how often does that actually happen in the real world, your guess is as good as mine.

  • wow this was really informative. i'm going to check out that free video editing software.

  • Look NixiePixel,

You did a good job for your first time On Open Source vs trail ware, shareware etc.

Lot to cover seeing how this spans over 25+ years of data...

Now I have personally used around 20 linux distro's...

There are some faults claims here and in your statements...

    1) Pidgin only works as long as Hotmail, yahoo mail, gmail etc... don't update there pop3 protocol.

    2) Gimp, crash never seen this or glitch with over 6 gigs of brushes and fonts added.

    fav - vlc, ffmpeg, compiz

  • I got all but the last one right! What do I win? =)

  • Utorrent because i can steal all the paid software with it

  • Maxthon is a REALLY fast browser...

  • Nixie you are so awesome I love it! But please do use the chance of having so many people watching to educate them on free software. Free and open source is not the same. The open source community is basically parasiting on the works of the free software movement without knowing why those people ever started creating free software or a GNU system. There is an operating system very much like Ubuntu but free rather then just open source. trisquel.info

  • You forgot VLC, best movie / music player around!

  • @jonno081 Not really, there are music players much better than VLC, that have support for managing libraries and tons of other stuff... VLC on ubuntu (and probably other similar distros) creates a really shitty video output and audio sounds really out of sync with the movement, it's also sometimes really slow.

I'll give it this: It's the best at playing videos on Windows, it has the best subtitles support a video player can have, and it's the most compatible with most of the popular vid formats

  • @jonno081 I think you should have seperate movie and music player. I use VLC for videos and foobar2000 for music :)

  • @jonno081 Not THE best, I like SMPlayer better

  • yeah and audacity too.

  • @jonno081 :O, thank you and bye bye itunes :)

  • @jonno081 naaaah mplayer2-git kicks ass

  • @jonno081 Agree... If VLC doesn't play it, it's broken :P

  • my fav open source software? Okay:

    Fedora 15.. <3

    GIMP

Chromium WebBrowser [I love the Addons]

    RecordMyDesktop

    FileZilla

    KDEnLive

    and Gwibber

But mostly I use googleapps: Google Docs, Google Mail, Google Kalender, Google Translator, Youtube and so on.. with Chromium its really nice.. because you can put your Websites on your desctop..

  • use libreoffice, oracle, the people who acquired sun, pretty much screwed over open office. however libreoffice just takes over where open office stopped.

  • and it is called Internet Explorer !

  • FireFox used to be great.... What the heck happened? Posting this from Chrome. I use IE9 and Chrome at home.

  • @laserfloyd

Yea the Fox got bloated, that damn container crap just sucks.

Still use Netscape on MS and Linux.

  • Will you do us all in USA a favour and send your Linux videos to all the male and lesbo school district purchasing agents.?

My property tax may go down, and my child may actually learn real life coding at school.

  • All of today's web browsers are free, but even Firefox isn't "totally free" (as in freedom).

  • Using NLE's on GNU/Linux, ha.

  • @ Nixie:

avidemux has been on linux for years..it's not a windows only program. I used in Linux 4 years ago...this video is only 2.

  • @MrSlowestD16 yep, and not the only non-linear video editor.

@NixiePixel you only scratched the surface

  • @QuimChaos What do you mean by "non-linear" ?

  • @MrSlowestD16 google non-linear video editing (or maybe non-linear vs linear editing)... can't link you to any page since youtube doesn’t allow links

  • @MrSlowestD16 Hrm, the definitions I found pretty much encompass everything short of tape since it's all random access.

  • OoooOOOoo say that first part to me again baby.

  • @ditoway Hahaha LoL :P

  • firefox is terrible now rendering speed is bad

  • she sounds like she's just reading wikipedia.

  • sorry, but GIMP is garbage compared to photoshop. free software isn't ALWAYS better, and when it isn't -- i use what best does the job.

and you hit the real issue when talking about KDenLive: "it does ALMOST everything" it's paid counterpart does, which is quite often the case.

too many people *cough* R.M.S. are software hippies that refuse to use anything that isn't free and open-source. that said, i AM an open-source developer. i'm also realistic. i use the right tool for a job, free or not.

  • @kingcrimson234 Proprietary has a place, as does OSS. For general purpose photo editing, if you're not a photographer or photo editor as a profession, GIMP will do everything most people need. OSS is most definitely not always the best alternative, though often times there are open source alternatives to commonly used programs...I'm a pragmatist, I use whatever works...most of the time, that's OSS. Though yes, having seen RMS in person, he's way too radical.

  • >mozilla corporation

    >corporation

  • sudo call me

  • Open office

  • Firefox

  • I think I love you. I think if you live in the SF Bay Area we should chill.

  • I wanna marry this girl. Damn she is cute & sexy xD :)

  • show ya boobs

  • Gimp is a bad piece of software. It crashers frequently.

  • FireFox and CSS fail

  • I lost some hope around 3.6.2, im glad 4 kicked ass

  • my favorite is vlc media player the only player that has so many options!

  • Thanks for the great video! If you need help installing, configuring, or setting up zen cart, check out our channel for lots of Easy Help Zen Cart Tutorials:

  • Another good website for developers is GitHub, you can share and download source code.

I personally use Google Chrome/Chromium for web browsing, it supports HTML5 and is relatively lightweight.

  • Nice one.

I myself use a lot of open source software.

But to answer your question: my favourite is... my browser - Mozilla Firefox. I wouldn't trade it for all other browsers put together.

And I also use other Mozilla applications - like Thunderbird to manage my e-mails, Sunbird to manage my schedule and so on.

  • @BestRaven I only use open source software, the only parts of my installation which aren't are:

    - Adobe Flash Player

    - and Intel's graphics driver

I don't use windows, I use Fedora 15, running on XFCE (The desktop environment), with chromium, emesene(A light open source MSN client), XChat (Open source IRC Client), and since it's linux, the kernel and everything used by it is open source.

  • momwons es gogo :*

  • This video is rather stupid. I'd rather have Adobe products but I'm broke so I have to resort to GIMP and other Open Source programs. Anyway, you should realize that the fact that these programs are free isn't the ONLY reason people should be using them. All I hear is free, free, free.

And, yo answer your question, my favourite Open Source is GIMP. I haven't used a whole lot of other programs. I have to say that i hate Open Office. :/

  • It's free as in "freedom", not free as in "free beer". Generally speaking, companies like Canonical get away with giving away their operating system (Ubuntu), because they make money selling support to larger businesses selling their server version. Novell and Red Hat do something similar, but they each have free versions (OpenSUSE and Fedora) that they cycle out to test new features. They sell their more stable versions and support.

  • I'm starting to become an Open Source enthusiast, in which Linux and BSD falls under

  • Linux > Microsoft, Mac

Apache > Microsoft, Google web servers

  • 1:35- Just illegally download Microsoft Office because MS is more compatible compared to OpenOffice but yes Microsoft is a rip off.

  • My Favorite by far is GCC and Emacs.. :-p

  • Microsoft Office>Open office

    Chrome>Firefox

    Photoshop(Would crush gimp)>GIMP

    Sony Vegas>KDenLive

you get my point...just because its free doesn't mean its good.

Most of the paid programs are better and more stable.

  • my favourite program is metaspoilt on mint linux

  • You can't compare GIMP with Photoshop CS5... the difference is HUGE for an advanced user...

  • My own version of Iceweasel 2.0.0.6 with firefox 3.5 rendering motor

  • CHROME

  • I would say that the open source vid editor displayed here is good, but sadly I've been spoiled by Adobe Premiere Pro, meaning that I find even Sony Vegas Pro to be a step down in the video editing experience.

  • google chrome

  • **Where does the income source come from, if any?** sorry, had to edit character count below!
