Personally I don't see the point in spanking the horse with the lead rope, you could simply make it easier for the horse by offering him something other than chaos.
If you guys really take a look and compare this video to a BUNCH of other videos on breaking horses this is one of the nicer ones. Yeah there are better ways to gentle a horse but take a look at others and go hate on them instead.
i have been breaking colts for 15 years ...sum are easy sum are hard.. most peolpe that bring me a horse want to see results in a week so sumtimes you dont have time to do lots of ground work .... its called COWBOY UP and it looks like this cowboy did...
all the people saying bad stuff, this horse has abviously spent time with this rider and trusts him a little. if that horse wanted him gone, it wouldve been done easy.
glad I was in 4-h when horses were first introduced as projects. yeah i'm old and this isn't all bad. round pen makes everyone safer including the horse who is getting a lot shoved at him pretty quick but you do gotta get on them sooner or later. two rope reins crossed over the neck and a bosal might be better to plow line and touch the neck. snubbing to start is all good. horse has to find out what you want and what you don't want. turning them in a plow line fashion keeps bucking down.ok
I don't see anything wrong with the way this horse was handled.
Guess what? A horse has to do one of two things in life: either allow itself to be a good riding horse or end up being taken to the slaughter house.
In some ways horses are like people. If you are a human being that isn't born into luxury, you either work for a living or end up living underneath an overpass begging others to give you enough for food.
@abihorse1015 I totaly agree, not so much the horse looking terrofied but more the horse looking confused- I would teach it basic voice commands (whoa and go) before even thinking about riding a horse
@thebuckskin07 and respect. This method of training unfortunately has been done for several years. Guess what? People have lynched other people for several years, people have murdered others for several years. Does that mean its right? No. This has been proven to work out of fear, force, intimidation, mental and physical pain or exhaustion. Never out of the horse actually enjoying his work. Never out of the horse truly loving it's rider. This is no way to treat any animal.
@ejfoun10 a horse is a horse. they dont have exactly the same emotions we do. the horse is confused i would be to if u wanted to through a pile of skin on my back then oh let you climb on up. every horse bucks. horses dont feel sorry for themselves they take the situation as it comes and it will be with every horse fight or flight. this one chose to fight. ive seen much much worse handling. god forbid what u say if the guy had a bit in the horses mouth. visit the real west..u wldnt lik it.
@thebuckskin07 I'm not from the east. I am from Michigan. Yes, my horse is a pet, but my horse also works hard. My horse might not be a working ranch horse, but even if your's is, its no excuse for poor treatment. I ride my horse all year long, with no indoor arena. I do my own chores every day, twice a day. I live on a working farm, I bale my own hay, and I go out, and feed the horses and pigs every day no matter if its -10, or 110. I have a true bond with my horse. A bond out of trust, love,
THE ONLY WAY TO BECOME CLOSE TO A HORSE IS TO GET ON IT!!!! THE TRUST WILL COME.... MOST PEOPLE NOW DAYS ARE SCARED TO RIDE A HORSE THAT MITE BUCK.... SO THEY COME UP WITH ALL THIS OTHER CRAP TO SELL OFF AS" BREAKING METHODS!! " GREAT VIDEO!!!
@thebuckskin07 Look up breaking and training. There is a clear difference. Yes, there is more that one way to train a horse. This is not one of them. I'm sorry that you have nothing better to do than defend this vulgar, and disgusting way of riding.
@ejfoun10 I bet your from back east where your horse is a pet for riding and only on days when the sun is out or the indoor arena is watered down so the dust doesn't bother you. If its to cold you probably have a stable boy do your chores. Out here we ride for work. It's not a choice when its blowing snow side ways or flooding over the top of your boots. I go out to feed my horses when you have to shovel yourself out the front door.
@ejfoun10 When its so hot the horses are sweating while eating in the pasture. This isn't a hobby for some of us. Who do you think has a true bond with thier horses? This is not beating nor torture. If you don't like, then turn to another video because this has been done for many many years and is proven to work.
I don't think that guy was doing anything out of line at all. They put another (broke) horse in with him, and the guy ran him around a little, big deal. Should he have had Clinton Anderson bring a bus of overweight, over-opinionated middle age women to show him how to do it? Barring some unforseen circumstance that horse looks like he'll be good to go. I like how the guy kept him moving forward, way better than letting them stand there waiting to explode. Job well done.
Why do people do dumb things? @thebuckskin07 this is not how you "break" a horse. Why do you want to break an animal first of all? How about you try training it. Do you really think that horse deserves to be tortured, and scared? You have no idea of what real riding is. I almost feel bad for you utter ignorance. Guess what? Im 15, and I can guarantee I know how to train a horse better than you ever dreamed. It makes me sick to see the type of horsemanship in this video.
@ejfoun10 Breaking and training are the same thing to me. I'm sorry that your 15, without the mentality to realize, their's more then one way to break a horse. I dont need to announce how good i am at riding to boost my self esteem. mature a little bit before you reply.
@ejfoun10 TORTURED???????? WHERE??????? THE TRAINING ALREADY STARTED THERE YOUNG ONE!!!! GOT TO RIDE A HORSE...NOT STAND ON THE GROUND AND LOOK AT IT!!!
I love how everyone on the internet suddenly becomes an expert horse trainer. I doubt hardly anyone knows shit about how to break in a horse, or how to train one. Get a grip people. There's more than one way to do things. Your way is not the only right way.
This horse is NOT being trained to be a barrel racer, a show horse, or a pleasure horse...this horse is being broken for RANCH WORK. Ofcourse it's going to be broken and trained differently. His job is not to be a pretty little fine tuned show pony, his job is to do work. do you see any harm being done here? NO. Does he have a bit in the mouth being ripping at? NO. Is he being beaten? NO. Does the rider know what he's doing? YES.
I never saw One beat, strike, whip, blow or abusive, mean hand on this horse once.. he carried a rider with very little resistance. My guess is yuou could have taken him out that afternoon for a ride...
The idiots saying this horse is being hurt and ruined. They need to really SHUT.UP. If you knew ANYTHING about riding (Which I highly doubt) You'd know this is one of the most NATURAL ways to break a horse. And if you want to start ranting some more... I need to tell you something,,, EVERY horse was broken pretty similiar to this, even YOUR horse if you own one.
@ChasinTheCans Horses are trained different ways for different disaplines. To a dressage rider this would look like the worst thing you could possibly do to a horse, but to a barral racer this horse will do just fine with more training. I can't do this stuff in a halter and lead w/ my 11yr old yet (WIP) and this colt is going around like it's no ones buisness. You train your way, they'll train thiers.
@HorseKrazy23 There's nothing "natural" about this! In a horses mind, they think there's a predator on their backs with this 'method.' The most 'natural' way to train a horse is to do it slowly and take your time. Not just hop on & pray to god you dont get killed.
@ChasinTheCans *shrug* One size does not fit all. They could have been sick bastards like some people and just bring a poor colt into the round pen and bash his face in with a baseball bat till he is so nurotic it takes 6months of rehab to get the horse to even let you touch it. Witch has been the case for at least 6 rescues at the rescue farm i help at and iv'e only been there for 4years. So if i had to pick this over the other...i would pick this. The horse isn't scared or hurt.

@Brookey1000 They aren't yankin on his mouth dumbass, watch the clip. The horse is wearing a halter, it doesn't have anything in it's mouth. This guy just taught this colt to pretty much neck rein in about a minute and a half. Let's see you do better
Every young horse will do some bolting around anyways. They just have to get used to it. This would be a bit more hardcore than using months and months to break it in, but the horses aren't exactly traumatized. Usually not hurt either.
really, not a bad horse, considering it's never been ridden, and im guessing the makers of the vid didnt warm it up to it much...to me it looked like they just used a halter right? so at least there wasnt any yanking really on its mouth....i imagine it must have had a saddle on it before right?you really shouldnt rush through training, but i imagine you people must do a throurough job with those horses' training...because u need them for so much! i wish i knew how this horse turned out :}P
wow this horse brok very nicesly!! calmed down pretty quick!!! and to all the smart ones out there...its best to desenitize as much as possible and as fast as possible....not smart waiting around a few months before introducing a canter cause when that horse spooks and goes into a canter with you on and never happening before...you will most likely be off in a second!!!
actually that is not how you break a colt and plus if you start them earlier they are a little more level headed...try breakin a six year old gelding compared to a 2 year old
The Fact is Guys. If a Horse REALLY wants you off it's back, no fancy cowboys or fabulous english riders are gonna have much say in landing in the dirt. If a horse is in pain, or is seriously scared/stressed, you are not gonna stay on long enough to find out why. What is really better, an hour of this, for a life time of well fed rich living, or months of special training and stress at a center far away from home and friends? I break horses using natural horsemanship, this is not bad!
That's one way to get things done, lol. The horse seems pretty calm to begin with. He's flailing his rope/arms to desensitize him, nothing wrong with that. There's no abuse, no spurring and kicking and pulling, and the horse looks to be a good age too, so they're not breaking in babies. I'd say he did well.
@MidMoon2 so true different approaches work with different horses. I know some horses that need a rough hand sometimes or they could be very dangerous, while others a rough hand can make them dangerous.
i dont know much about breaking a horse, so thats why im posting this, but howcome the other horse was in there? was it to make the colt less nervous? and wasnt the other horse in danger of getting kicked or something with them being so close to eachother?
@sonnyboo2 During breaking horses rarely kick out, they tend to more buck and rear. The other horse was in close proximity for what I'm guessing was desensitizing. If this horse is going to be used for cattle then it will have cows all around it and other riders. Also at the very beginning when the horse being broke posed the most threat the Paint was kept very very close, making it difficult for the other horse to kick.
Thx for posting. To all u nay Sayers ; go watch horses in a herd, they can do a lot more harm to each other when teaching each other about respect. Well done
that is not how you break a horse..all you are doing is scaring him and it doesnt cost money to take the time and train a horse right and plus in the end you'll will have a better horse...
@kearag03 The horse will most likely be used for cattle work. The rider is desensitizing the horse to hands and ropes waving about. How do you propose that the horse be broke? And yes in the ranch business time is money. Every minute you spend on one thing takes time away from another thing that needs done. I had a friend who worked on a ranch in Australia, they worked long days and did not have time to sit there and use Parellie. It was throw on a saddle and go.
I start all my horses using this method(Get on and Go), they are ALL now kids horses, that you can rope, carry calves, pound posts and shoot off of, I promise you that they will have more heart and do more, than one you baby along. If you reward them for every little thing, they get lazy and don't work, I know I have started horses with that method. Here in the big country we have to start our horses at 4, one pasture is 25,000 acres, so we don't have time to spend months on 1 horse.
Would you believe that horse is 7 years old. I know him and he is a hand, he got more out of that horse that most people could in 2 weeks. I personally have got on a colt, for its first ride and gathered cows, it had never even been drove before, when I was done, he was turning and I was swinging a rope on it. Using this method, I broke 15 colts in 30 days, I did this by getting wet saddle blankets riding alot of miles, you get a horse tired and get him to use the thinking side of his brain.
What jerks, the poor horse!! I guess this is what rednecks call funny. Oh and to everyone who thinks it takes months to break in a horse without causing stress it takes like 3-8 days
@b1fama ha ya right. I'd like to see you take on our colts. We have been working with them every day for weeks and they still freak out at stuff. No it does not take 3-8 days it takes much longer with whatever method you choose.
that horse is too old to be on the first time, start w a couple rides when they are 2 then work your way up, but dont ride them hard until they are at least 4, colts just need miles put on them
@thekatiecarswell actually you are wrong. I'm much older than you and work for two horse farms and have ridden and worked at more so I think I may know a bit more than you when it comes to horse training. Smacking a horse does not make 'em rear. Smacking is used as a form of discipline only to be done one the neck. If a horse is not desensitized elsewhere to smacking there would be loads of problems. I rode a 4 year old who after a fly infested ride didn't even flinch when I smacked a fly.
I see nothing wrong here... sure, if it were my horse I'd do loads of groundwork and do it slow and steady, but he is wearing a halter and the horse is reacting perfictly. koodos to u. :)
This is how you break a colt. Do all of you guys really think that a ranch has the time and money to take months on breaking one horse? most of the colt starting clinics teach "weekend cowboys" to ride their spoiled horse. This colt was farther along in 1:35 than most colts would be in 2 months.
@thebuckskin07 man your an idiot, it doesnt matter what you do. you cant start a colt and be 100% with out going 90 days. you can still go out and day work with your colt which helps but your a dumb ass if you think you can start a colt by running them around a round pen for 10 minutes.
@Abraham610 I was arguing with others about taking two months of ground work before getting on or just getting on from the start. I never said the horse was "finished"(Look it up). I only said the horse would be farther along then others in two months. Ranchers use colts for day work, thats why they dont spend time on the ground work. No horse can be finished in three months. It's an ongoing process that is never done. Always something to work on.
@Abraham610 Im not an Idiot when it comes to this. Look up the whole conversation before you start calling names out. You kinda agreed with me in your post about using the horse for day work. Yet you called me an idiot?
Pfft to hell with all these people who think they know just OH SO MUCH. It may come as a surprise to you, but there's more than 1 way to do things. That horse was fine, and you could tell that it wasn't traumatized at all, and was calming down near the end, once it realized nothing bad was happening to it. Jesus, give the animal some credit.
@Surfingninja9 there may be more then one way to do things but it doesnt meen its the rite way, example: a dog misbehaves, you could beet it almost to death, or tell him no, make him feel bad and get on with it... wich ones rite to you??
@ilovhorse Ok for one, that example has nothing to do with this because he is not beating the horse or anything remotely cruel like that. He's riding it, and the horse doesn't like it. SPOILER: animals are often times made to do things they don't like for the greater good. Another SPOILER: the horse is fine.
Actually against popular ideology I can get a horse do several things I want on the fist ride. Everyone thinks they are a horse whisperer these days, yet have nothing to show worth while. I have trained and worked with top show horses all my life and I don't do the whole 2 months ground work bull shit and I get winning horses regardless. If one is abused, fine. But if they are just bucky, ride em and stop whining like a bunch of sissies.
you actually hit that horse at 1:35! Your disgusting! you dont know how to ride! Let alone hit a 2 year old on his first ride! fuck i hate when people are soooo stupid with beautiful animals, educate yourself first dumbass
i wish that the guy wouldnt have man handled him. as soon as the horse stopped and relaxed pet him and get off. that way they learn that just by being calm they get rewraded.. then they wont thhink that everytime they get saddled they think they are going ot have to run around and be man handled. they learn to like being riden and see it as a good thing.. not a bad thing.. that just messes up a horses quite mind. true cowboys respected their animals
@jori1011 You can't be gentle with a horse if they are freaking out. They have to learn you are the boss and that when they are calm THEN you become gentle. It's what I do and my horses love me. Everytime I hope off of them they nuzzle me. They like knowing who's in charge. Ever noticed how horses kick and bite each other to establish dominance and yet are all lovy dubby with each other? Same concept.
@jori1011 He is a true cowboy, I know him personally, and I have seen him get on some stuff that most people could only dream of staying in the middle of. We all start our horses like this, and we can get our horses just as gentle in 20 days than most people in 2 months. I have a colt after 4 rides in the round pen, just like this.Ride #5, I worked cows and had him side passing with gates hitting him, he never jumped, pushed cows up a loading chute and backing up 20 feet back down the chute.
This is the best video on horse breaking i've seen. This horse probably turned out to be a better mount than 90%of the other horses being trained on here.
Honestly people stop acting like you know how you should or shouldnt do this or that when first riding a horse....how do you think people have tamed horses for thousands of years? This is how cowboys broke their horses. What about Native Americans? Im sure there methods were similar.Just because you don't think that the way someone is training a horse the way you wouldnt doesn't make it wrong.
I like the general custer part lol. screw those other hippies i thought you did a good job. the next colt i break i might try having the other horse in there i had never thought of doing that.
That's actually a good way to give a horse his first ride. It's good to haev a second person there to help you regain control should the situation turn ugly. Good job. I liked this a lot. You got his feet moving, and that's the important thing.
@eventingfreak101 What are you talking about? That is excellent horsemanship right there. He got that horse calmed down and trained like he had been riding for years in a minute. That's awesome. Did you see how that horse was reacting to him and how it was doing what he wanted without throwing a fit? That is absolutely amazing.
OMG..... omg :'[ Dont you people CARE?? whyyyy are you whipping him!???? why dont you just end off on a good note!???? WTH is wrong with you?! Its people like you that ruin GOOD horses... you mkae them into souless macheins that fear people and do as their asked because they dont wanna get HIT! I hope to God one day that horse kicks the shit out of you , JERKASS
i seriously hate people like him. acting like a macho jack ass and trying to show off how much he can tramatize this poor horse. thats not how you break a horse what so ever.. your not a cowboy. your hardly a man. you obvs dont understand horses. yeah i get that your trying to some him whose boss. but seriously do you have to act like a fucking idiot the whole time? well have fun with a soured horse. thats no way for a horse to be trained. also how old was this horse. and do you know its name
@CaseyHorses He's not traumatizing the horse, he's getting him moving. He's not whipping him hard, it's like a light tap to get him moving. Some people train their horses to get going using the crop, others use leg commands. Usually people start with the reins.
@Alexandros1294 i said nothing about whipping the horse. i was talking about having it rammed up beside a fence and a horse. i trained my own horse, broke him in and he NEVER bucked like that not once, he even zapped himself by the eletric fense and he did nothing. people need to know how to comunicate with a horses not just jump in and do everything in one day. the horse is just gunna end up confused and sour.
@CaseyHorses First off, he's not being rammed into the fence. The other horse is helping him see how he should behave for one, and two, that horse wasn't even bucking. That wasn't even a crow hop. That horse was doing exactly what he wanted, he was responding to the rider, and apparently he was ridden in a parade the day after just fine. They did everything right. Your horse must have nerves of steel if he was electrocuted and didn't move though... that's impressive.
@CaseyHorses lol so you result to insulting me rather than arguing against what I put up to you. Typical. I'll comment to whoever I want. Stop being such a know it all about horses when you clearly don't 'know it all.'
@Alexandros1294 how am i being a know it all ? have i ever said i know alot about horses? no i believe i did not. but i do know that if a horse doesnt trust you and you go and put it thought this kind stress it wont turn out well in the long run, and this is not an accuarate video for breaking a horse
@CaseyHorses Looks like the horse trusts him to me. For one he isn't bucking, two he provided another horse to help him out and see how to act, 3, the horse is doing what the rider wants him to do. That's my 2 cents. Let's just agree to disagree and go on with our lives.
its not really showing who is boss its show whats right and whats wrong thats all he doing he is pretty much telling the horses im not going to put up with you bucking it doesnt get you anywhere.
I think he did a great job. he was just riding him out to get the buck out of him. and another thing i saw in the comment, is how would the horse get a hard mouth when he doesn't have a bit in his mouth? just a halter and lead. and another thing he's not really hitting the horse hard with the rope. just more like a light slap to keep him moving. and the dude is only disengadging the hips. and if any of u people don't know what the is then ur not horse people that own horses and experienced it.
So the horse finally calms down and then he hits it with the rope! What a bunch of macho crap! It's more about the rider's need for attention than breaking the horse.
He was breaking the horse. The horse was broken already,, though not correctly. The guy was letting the horse buck, letting him move out. Sometimes, that's what you have to do. Some horses just need to get the buck out, and after that, they'll be all better. Sometimes, not. Obviously, this horse was NOT treated badly in any way, he was just being worked in a roundpen to get the buck out. And, he got the buck out. That's it. That's all.
well i see a few mistakes hahaha if ur gonna break a horse ride him not hold the saddle horn me and mi brother a bot riders and u will never see ether of us grab the horn tht is the worst thing u can do. ppl thing ridin with ur weak hand up is jus for the rodeos its not its counter balence and tht horse dont buck very hard to beggin with come ride a few tht we buy and sale to local sale the post tht better yet video us well show u how to ride a buckin horse
@MrBopbop18 When I first started riding I used to hold on to the horn and it saved me from falling several times. I guess I was actually holding on to the canal of the saddle which is right under the horn, but I still never fell off. It takes a while to build up the strength in your legs to be able to hold on to the horse.
This is so mean, he's not breaking it in... he's just stressing the poor animal by spinning it and yanking it around, bouncing around all over it's back and confusing it when it clearly doesn't know what to do. He needs to sort his seat out.
@Jezzkuhh I really hope a horse doesn't get around you. That's how you break a horse. That horse is calm the entire time, can you not tell? He's not making it nervous or traumatizing it. He's lightly hitting him with the rein crop to keep him moving, and spinning is good. If you keep the horse moving in figure eights, it lets them know you're the one in charge, and that's what training a horse is about.
@Alexandros1294 Unlucky :P I already own two beautiful horses of my own, have broken in many more and regularily ride and compete others for different people :] You Americans are all the same. It isn't about taking charge, it's about building a partnership and trusting eachother. I use Parelli and Monty Roberts methods with all of the horses I train, and as a result they couldn't try harder for me :]
@Jezzkuhh I use Parelli and Roberts methods too. I also like Clint Anderson. My horses also try their hardest for me. I have a partnership with my horses, and they all trust me, and I trust them. But I am in charge still. Always have to treat the horses like friends. I would rather do something for a friend than just any other guy. That's why I take time to bond with my horses and that's why I establish trust and a partnership.
In the beginning of this video I was thinking, "man, this guys going to get thrown off...and you know what...he deserves it". BUT, as it got closer to the end and I kept watching my who perspective changed. I began to see that nothing was going wrong that normally doesn't, and that within the near 2 mins of this video, the horse was pretty much green broke. Great Job !!!
Good job! I've broke countless horses this way. Last summer I broke one for my son and he has since had three year olds riding him and even packed our camp into the mountains last month. He has all the trust, not short tempered not a maniac. Breaking, Gentling, Training, Whatever! Call it what you will. My Greatgranddad must have been a monster, cause he broke horsed in a pen just like this one. There are Cowboys and then there are tender folks with fancy words. Same results!
I agree, I'm a western rider and i treat my horses as partners including my two year old that is still technically 'unbroken' even though I ride her daily bareback *shrugs* Whatever, anyway point being I don't agree with the way they were BREAKING this horse, a horse should never be BROKEN anyway, only gentled.
wow, this guy is doing everything right, the horse isnt cooperating. you know-it-alls arent seeing past the fact that the horse needs to be corrected and the rider is doing so. he seems like he knows quite a bit by watching this video.
notice 0:16 he draws the horse in a circle to correct it and as soon as he releases, the horse starts in again. this horse isnt broke yet so obviously its not going to cooperate as do most horses
i dont think thats the right way to go about it a horse shouldnt need to fell its options being taken away from it like that real natural horsemanship can amount to a rider being able to mount a horse for the first time and the horse responding because it wants to that horse didnt want to be treated like that you could see it and i think if it had been ridden better it would have responded better but thats my opinion but try seeing it from the horses eyes not your own would u have liked it?
@LoveableHorseable No this horse isn't for rodeos lol. If it was a bronc they would be training him in the arena with a dummy on his back. They also flag them down and basically go through full 8 second rides to train them.
not true... this is a quick and efficient way to break a horse in. there's nothing wrong with this. just because it's not all tenderfoot like people think it should be doesn't make it wrong
Personally I don't see the point in spanking the horse with the lead rope, you could simply make it easier for the horse by offering him something other than chaos.

Horses gotta work for food, just like us.
That's just the way it is.

@abihorse1015 I totaly agree, not so much the horse looking terrofied but more the horse looking confused- I would teach it basic voice commands (whoa and go) before even thinking about riding a horse
cupcakes8000 3 months ago
@thebuckskin07 and respect. This method of training unfortunately has been done for several years. Guess what? People have lynched other people for several years, people have murdered others for several years. Does that mean its right? No. This has been proven to work out of fear, force, intimidation, mental and physical pain or exhaustion. Never out of the horse actually enjoying his work. Never out of the horse truly loving it's rider. This is no way to treat any animal.
ejfoun10 3 months ago

MrJohnjohn04 3 months ago
@thebuckskin07 Look up breaking and training. There is a clear difference. Yes, there is more that one way to train a horse. This is not one of them. I'm sorry that you have nothing better to do than defend this vulgar, and disgusting way of riding.
ejfoun10 4 months ago
@ejfoun10 I bet your from back east where your horse is a pet for riding and only on days when the sun is out or the indoor arena is watered down so the dust doesn't bother you. If its to cold you probably have a stable boy do your chores. Out here we ride for work. It's not a choice when its blowing snow side ways or flooding over the top of your boots. I go out to feed my horses when you have to shovel yourself out the front door.
thebuckskin07 3 months ago
@ejfoun10 When its so hot the horses are sweating while eating in the pasture. This isn't a hobby for some of us. Who do you think has a true bond with thier horses? This is not beating nor torture. If you don't like, then turn to another video because this has been done for many many years and is proven to work.
thebuckskin07 3 months ago
I don't think that guy was doing anything out of line at all. They put another (broke) horse in with him, and the guy ran him around a little, big deal. Should he have had Clinton Anderson bring a bus of overweight, over-opinionated middle age women to show him how to do it? Barring some unforseen circumstance that horse looks like he'll be good to go. I like how the guy kept him moving forward, way better than letting them stand there waiting to explode. Job well done.
fionawreaks 4 months ago
Why do people do dumb things? @thebuckskin07 this is not how you "break" a horse. Why do you want to break an animal first of all? How about you try training it. Do you really think that horse deserves to be tortured, and scared? You have no idea of what real riding is. I almost feel bad for you utter ignorance. Guess what? Im 15, and I can guarantee I know how to train a horse better than you ever dreamed. It makes me sick to see the type of horsemanship in this video.
ejfoun10 4 months ago
@ejfoun10 Breaking and training are the same thing to me. I'm sorry that your 15, without the mentality to realize, their's more then one way to break a horse. I dont need to announce how good i am at riding to boost my self esteem. mature a little bit before you reply.

I love how everyone on the internet suddenly becomes an expert horse trainer. I doubt hardly anyone knows shit about how to break in a horse, or how to train one. Get a grip people. There's more than one way to do things. Your way is not the only right way.
Alexandros1294 4 months ago
This horse is NOT being trained to be a barrel racer, a show horse, or a pleasure horse...this horse is being broken for RANCH WORK. Ofcourse it's going to be broken and trained differently. His job is not to be a pretty little fine tuned show pony, his job is to do work. do you see any harm being done here? NO. Does he have a bit in the mouth being ripping at? NO. Is he being beaten? NO. Does the rider know what he's doing? YES.

JasperIsaLittleHorse 5 months ago
@JasperIsaLittleHorse Oh REALLY? I'm a barrel racer and I do not see how this colt will do 'just fine.'
ChasinTheCans 5 months ago
@ChasinTheCans But I do. If you knew ANYTHING about western riding, you'd know this was the most natural way to break a horse.
HorseKrazy23 5 months ago
@HorseKrazy23 There's nothing "natural" about this! In a horses mind, they think there's a predator on their backs with this 'method.' The most 'natural' way to train a horse is to do it slowly and take your time. Not just hop on & pray to god you dont get killed.
ChasinTheCans 5 months ago
@ChasinTheCans You keep thinkin that mmkay? This way is faster and just as painless. ;)

@leleleah1 poor horse?.. really?
hataCONTROL187 11 months ago
That's one way to get things done, lol. The horse seems pretty calm to begin with. He's flailing his rope/arms to desensitize him, nothing wrong with that. There's no abuse, no spurring and kicking and pulling, and the horse looks to be a good age too, so they're not breaking in babies. I'd say he did well.
CherokeeCheval 11 months ago
Not sayin this horse was broke too harsh, but it bugs me when people think it's either fast and rough or slow and gentle.
You can have both, just needs the right approach.
MidMoon2 1 year ago
@MidMoon2 so true different approaches work with different horses. I know some horses that need a rough hand sometimes or they could be very dangerous, while others a rough hand can make them dangerous.
Emura100 11 months ago
i dont know much about breaking a horse, so thats why im posting this, but howcome the other horse was in there? was it to make the colt less nervous? and wasnt the other horse in danger of getting kicked or something with them being so close to eachother?
sonnyboo2 1 year ago
@sonnyboo2 During breaking horses rarely kick out, they tend to more buck and rear. The other horse was in close proximity for what I'm guessing was desensitizing. If this horse is going to be used for cattle then it will have cows all around it and other riders. Also at the very beginning when the horse being broke posed the most threat the Paint was kept very very close, making it difficult for the other horse to kick.
Emura100 11 months ago
Thx for posting. To all u nay Sayers ; go watch horses in a herd, they can do a lot more harm to each other when teaching each other about respect. Well done

that is not how you break a horse..all you are doing is scaring him and it doesnt cost money to take the time and train a horse right and plus in the end you'll will have a better horse...
kearag03 1 year ago
@kearag03 The horse will most likely be used for cattle work. The rider is desensitizing the horse to hands and ropes waving about. How do you propose that the horse be broke? And yes in the ranch business time is money. Every minute you spend on one thing takes time away from another thing that needs done. I had a friend who worked on a ranch in Australia, they worked long days and did not have time to sit there and use Parellie. It was throw on a saddle and go.
Emura100 11 months ago
I start all my horses using this method(Get on and Go), they are ALL now kids horses, that you can rope, carry calves, pound posts and shoot off of, I promise you that they will have more heart and do more, than one you baby along. If you reward them for every little thing, they get lazy and don't work, I know I have started horses with that method. Here in the big country we have to start our horses at 4, one pasture is 25,000 acres, so we don't have time to spend months on 1 horse.
DrunkenCowboy88 1 year ago 2
Would you believe that horse is 7 years old. I know him and he is a hand, he got more out of that horse that most people could in 2 weeks. I personally have got on a colt, for its first ride and gathered cows, it had never even been drove before, when I was done, he was turning and I was swinging a rope on it. Using this method, I broke 15 colts in 30 days, I did this by getting wet saddle blankets riding alot of miles, you get a horse tired and get him to use the thinking side of his brain.
DrunkenCowboy88 1 year ago
I never realized how many horse trainers their where! Just look at all the comments on every video!

that horse is too old to be on the first time, start w a couple rides when they are 2 then work your way up, but dont ride them hard until they are at least 4, colts just need miles put on them

Emura100 11 months ago

This is how you break a colt. Do all of you guys really think that a ranch has the time and money to take months on breaking one horse? most of the colt starting clinics teach "weekend cowboys" to ride their spoiled horse. This colt was farther along in 1:35 than most colts would be in 2 months.
thebuckskin07 1 year ago 25
@thebuckskin07 man your an idiot, it doesnt matter what you do. you cant start a colt and be 100% with out going 90 days. you can still go out and day work with your colt which helps but your a dumb ass if you think you can start a colt by running them around a round pen for 10 minutes.
Abraham610 1 year ago
@Abraham610 I was arguing with others about taking two months of ground work before getting on or just getting on from the start. I never said the horse was "finished"(Look it up). I only said the horse would be farther along then others in two months. Ranchers use colts for day work, thats why they dont spend time on the ground work. No horse can be finished in three months. It's an ongoing process that is never done. Always something to work on.
thebuckskin07 1 year ago

That horse was fine, and you could tell that it wasn't traumatized at all, and was calming down near the end, once it realized nothing bad was happening to it. Jesus, give the animal some credit.
Surfingninja9 1 year ago 17
@Surfingninja9 there may be more then one way to do things but it doesnt meen its the rite way, example: a dog misbehaves, you could beet it almost to death, or tell him no, make him feel bad and get on with it... wich ones rite to you??
ilovhorse 7 months ago
@ilovhorse Ok for one, that example has nothing to do with this because he is not beating the horse or anything remotely cruel like that. He's riding it, and the horse doesn't like it. But if they are just bucky, ride em and stop whining like a bunch of sissies.

i wish that the guy wouldnt have man handled him. as soon as the horse stopped and relaxed pet him and get off. that way they learn that just by being calm they get rewraded.. then they wont thhink that everytime they get saddled they think they are going ot have to run around and be man handled. they learn to like being riden and see it as a good thing.. not a bad thing.. that just messes up a horses quite mind. true cowboys respected their animals
jori1011 1 year ago
@jori1011 You can't be gentle with a horse if they are freaking out. They have to learn you are the boss and that when they are calm THEN you become gentle. It's what I do and my horses love me. Everytime I hope off of them they nuzzle me. They like knowing who's in charge. Ever noticed how horses kick and bite each other to establish dominance and yet are all lovy dubby with each other? Same concept.
Alexandros1294 1 year ago
@jori1011 He is a true cowboy, I know him personally, and I have seen him get on some stuff that most people could only dream of staying in the middle of. We all start our horses like this, and we can get our horses just as gentle in 20 days than most people in 2 months. I have a colt after 4 rides in the round pen, just like this.Ride #5, I worked cows and had him side passing with gates hitting him, he never jumped, pushed cows up a loading chute and backing up 20 feet back down the chute.
DrunkenCowboy88 1 year ago 2

CaseyHorses 1 year ago 2
@CaseyHorses He's not traumatizing the horse, he's getting him moving. He's not whipping him hard, it's like a light tap to get him moving. Some people train their horses to get going using the crop, others use leg commands. Usually people start with the reins.
Alexandros1294 1 year ago
@Alexandros1294 i said nothing about whipping the horse. i was talking about having it rammed up beside a fence and a horse. i trained my own horse, broke him in and he NEVER bucked like that not once, he even zapped himself by the eletric fense and he did nothing. people need to know how to comunicate with a horses not just jump in and do everything in one day. the horse is just gunna end up confused and sour.
CaseyHorses 1 year ago
@CaseyHorses First off, he's not being rammed into the fence. The other horse is helping him see how he should behave for one, and two, that horse wasn't even bucking. That wasn't even a crow hop. That horse was doing exactly what he wanted, he was responding to the rider, and apparently he was ridden in a parade the day after just fine. They did everything right. Your horse must have nerves of steel if he was electrocuted and didn't move though... that's impressive.

CaseyHorses 1 year ago
@CaseyHorses Looks like the horse trusts him to me. For one he isn't bucking, two he provided another horse to help him out and see how to act, 3, the horse is doing what the rider wants him to do. That's my 2 cents. Let's just agree to disagree and go on with our lives.
Alexandros1294 1 year ago

justbreyanna 1 year ago
I think he did a great job. he was just riding him out to get the buck out of him. and another thing i saw in the comment, is how would the horse get a hard mouth when he doesn't have a bit in his mouth? just a halter and lead. and another thing he's not really hitting the horse hard with the rope. just more like a light slap to keep him moving. and the dude is only disengadging the hips. and if any of u people don't know what the is then ur not horse people that own horses and experienced it.

Why are they kicking and hitting the poor horse! Geeze! Not a way to train a horse of you ask me!

@EvEnTeR12345 tell me about it!

So the horse finally calms down and then he hits it with the rope! What a bunch of macho crap! It's more about the rider's need for attention than breaking the horse.

@canterforever1 "i no right".........????????
norcalranger 1 year ago
@norcalranger No, he was keeping the horse moving, not hitting it. The horse was calm the whole time.
Alexandros1294 1 year ago

MrBopbop18 1 year ago
@MrBopbop18 When I first started riding I used to hold on to the horn and it saved me from falling several times. I guess I was actually holding on to the canal of the saddle which is right under the horn, but I still never fell off. It takes a while to build up the strength in your legs to be able to hold on to the horse.

This is so mean, he's not breaking it in... he's just stressing the poor animal by spinning it and yanking it around, bouncing around all over it's back and confusing it when it clearly doesn't know what to do. He needs to sort his seat out.
Jezzkuhh 1 year ago
@Jezzkuhh I really hope a horse doesn't get around you. That's how you break a horse. That horse is calm the entire time, can you not tell? He's not making it nervous or traumatizing it. He's lightly hitting him with the rein crop to keep him moving, and spinning is good. If you keep the horse moving in figure eights, it lets them know you're the one in charge, and that's what training a horse is about.
Alexandros1294 1 year ago
@Alexandros1294 Unlucky :P I already own two beautiful horses of my own, have broken in many more and regularily ride and compete others for different people :] You Americans are all the same. It isn't about taking charge, it's about building a partnership and trusting eachother. I use Parelli and Monty Roberts methods with all of the horses I train, and as a result they couldn't try harder for me :]
Jezzkuhh 1 year ago

Great Job !!!
metalicrose1618 1 year ago
MrCotton75 1 year ago
I agree, I'm a western rider and i treat my horses as partners including my two year old that is still technically 'unbroken' even though I ride her daily bareback *shrugs* Whatever, anyway point being I don't agree with the way they were BREAKING this horse, a horse should never be BROKEN anyway, only gentled.

let go of that chicken stick!!!
good ride! haha. ive been on broncs its pretty fun. just as long as you have control
that guy had it no need for rude comments. and hey buy the way hes just bucking not broncing lol
corrineh2424 1 year ago
wow, this guy is doing everything right, the horse isnt cooperating. you know-it-alls arent seeing past the fact that the horse needs to be corrected and the rider is doing so. he seems like he knows quite a bit by watching this video.
notice 0:16 he draws the horse in a circle to correct it and as soon as he releases, the horse starts in again. this horse isnt broke yet so obviously its not going to cooperate as do most horses
jkemp315 1 year ago
how many hours did you have to ride him to get him broke?
RodeoHorsey 2 years ago
That's the right way to do it!
BeePlainSugar 2 years ago
i dont think thats the right way to go about it a horse shouldnt need to fell its options being taken away from it like that real natural horsemanship can amount to a rider being able to mount a horse for the first time and the horse responding because it wants to that horse didnt want to be treated like that you could see it and i think if it had been ridden better it would have responded better but thats my opinion but try seeing it from the horses eyes not your own would u have liked it?

I can tell he's a spunky one XD

i think this is a bronco used for rodeos so dont bust him about training... good job with him :D
LoveableHorseable 2 years ago
@LoveableHorseable No this horse isn't for rodeos lol. If it was a bronc they would be training him in the arena with a dummy on his back. They also flag them down and basically go through full 8 second rides to train them.

thats sick. plus if you break your horse like this they dont trust you the same.
BsJaBaBy 2 years ago
not true... this is a quick and efficient way to break a horse in. there's nothing wrong with this. just because it's not all tenderfoot like people think it should be doesn't make it wrong
