Don't worry I don't breed geckos and I don't plan on it but if you were to breed geckos, would it's be ok to use non sharp aquarium gravel, or substrate that is safe if eaten? What else could you use? Just curious :)
@550starlight For incubating? Or what? I would not use aquarium gravel for incubating, it doesn't hold water, all of the water would be on the bottom of the incubator. 5 years of breeding and I haven't had either perlite or APS ingested.
@stanfel2 SuperHatch seems to be smaller pieces... I prefer the larger chunks because less chance of the gecko ingesting it but i'm sure it's pretty safe.
@movetotherhythm The larger the container, the more beneficial to the eggs. If they're small, there's not as much temperature regulation in the enclosed space.
If I've been seeing correctly, you trend towards the perlite over the APS. Are there particular reasons for that, despite APS's reusability and handy color-change nature?
I just personally had not had a chance to hatch anything out on APS and felt that I couldn't make a proper comparison. At this time I have now had some successful hatchings with APS and I really do like the way it worked out - nothing stuck to the hatchling even after it was covered in egg-goo.
hey i bought some perlite the other day and it is enhanced with miracle grow.. it doesnt actually say whats it is but im not sure if i should use it cause idk if it is fertilizer
Do not use Miracle Gro brand, all of them have fertilizer and chemicals in them. You might have to go to a plant nursery or a home improvement store like Home Depot in the garden section to find straight perlite. It should only have perlite in it, nothing else.
so I just made a crested gecko incubation video and when it came to substrate I just put a bubble telling others to check out your video I hope that's OK : )~
Cool - just make sure you have a place to keep all the babies just in case you can't sell them, because the market's pretty saturated with them right now and they're hard to sell.
would miracal grow peralite work for incubating?
LeoBreeder42 1 month ago
@LeoBreeder42 I wouldn't use "miracle gro" anything with animals. Probably has some kind of fertilizer in it.

When do females lay their first infertile eggs of they hae never been with a male?
550starlight 4 months ago
@550starlight Different for every female, some don't ever lay inferts, even :)
stolenmilkcrate 4 months ago
Ok thanks, I was just wondering :) I guess I should have thought of that but what if it was a gecko safe dirt substrate? Don't worry I don't breed :)
550starlight 5 months ago
@550starlight To keep the eggs on - I don't like anything that might stain the eggs. Some kinds of dirts can do that.

does vermiculite work? thats what the guy i bought my geckos from told me to use
donius22 2 years ago
Some people use it and think it's OK, others report problems with it.
stolenmilkcrate 2 years ago
oh so should i buy perlite instead?
donius22 2 years ago
Perlite and APS is what I have personal experience with. Vermiculite may work fine for you.
stolenmilkcrate 2 years ago
@stolenmilkcrate which is the best one for cresties?

how often do you turn the eggs?
yajtub 3 years ago
You do not turn these eggs. In nature they'd be buried under the earth, and left to hatch on their own - the females do not tend to the nest.
stolenmilkcrate 3 years ago
ok just a question but when the planting soil dry does it turn white again or does it keep the color.
Head0217 3 years ago
I should have covered that in the video! It does dry back down to white when it's drying out.
