Jimmy does die actually. He gets stabbed by Davis Bloome when Davis goes into a murderous rage (after finding out that Chloe actually loves Jimmy). His final actions are to stab and kill Davis to prevent him from killing Chloe. Then he dies :(

The Jimmy who died in the season 8 finale is not the real Jimmy Olsen of the comics. The name given at the funeral was Henry James Olsen, which is not the comic book Jimmy Olsen's real name that is James Bartholomew Olsen.

It has been said that the actual Jimmy Olsen who will one day join Lois and Clark is in fact the younger brother of Smallville's Jimmy that was shown at the funeral, who will grow up to follow in the footsteps of his older brother "Jimmy Olsen"
