I live in Ontario Canada and I noticed that my off grid solar system was pounding out the amps today like in the summer. It is winter and the sunlight has to pass through more atmosphere before striking my modules but It just seemed brighter today than most.
A few posts back it was said that the power grids cant go down because of anything the sun does, just wondering if that is really true. 2 events have made me think that the sun has the power to effect our hydro or planet, 1989 Quebec geomagnetic storm causes 9hr blackout,100's of millions in damages. Also the carrington event 1859 if that happened today would that not mess with the grid and communications a bit. it would be great if you were able to set the record straight on this, Thankyou 8)
@gotsome45 people fearing power grid collapse, and those selling a catastrophic CME event are in victim consciousness. focusing on rare freak events to create panic solar cycle 24 to dis-empowers humanity. worrying about what happened 150 years ago and what might happen in the perfect storm scenario might function well in a movie or documentary. If a "carrington type event" were to happen today it could be 1000 times worse than before, why focus on the ifs, buts and maybes ... all we have is NOW
@SolarWatcher Well put ty for your response I myself realize that everyday on this planet is a blessing and that anyone of us or all can be taken at anytime as a father that can be a bit scary but It does not mean that i will put my life on hold and head for the hills,I do feel that those types of threats have made me more willing to midigate by keeping a min of 3months food and to keep a kit in my car when travelling, chance favors the prepared mind.
@gotsome45 just bugs me when people say stuff like the sun or any other planet changing event wont happen or cant happen without any explenation of why it cant happen I would think people should be made more aware of what can happen and have the chance to prepare for it. without scaring the crap out of them of coarse. It does not have to be all doom and gloom. My family still has a healthy, fun life but I would feel like a fool if I ignored someones warning to prepare for, well whatever
@gotsome45 i agree, there is no excuse for ignorance though, people are at different levels of consciousness, you cant expect everyone to get it and be balanced enough to look at things objectively. some are on the right page while some prefer to keep their heads in the sand. More importantly It depends on who is giving the warning, being able to discern is more important than following what the media is dishing out.
@ivan1u2be CME's are usually associated with wild weather related phenomena here on earth, and also have an influence in magma movement. Can also be associated as the driving mechanism that fuels the earthquake cycle.
@ivan1u2be - I believe that cme's are symptom. They are symptom just like earthquakes. Consider the notion that gravitational influences that excite the sun also tug and pull at the Earths Crust. So, when the sun gets funky, so do our moving plates. The pattern has not been conclusive and inconsistent. Earthquakes happening when flares aren't Earth directed.
Hi, I am wondering why it takes several days for the effects of a flare to reach us? I would have guessed that it would affect us very soon after the CME. Thanks.
Fantastic blast! This is going to be a good show, right? :)
Can we expect a large enough storm to be seen in lower latitudes like the one back in November? I really hope we can see it this time if it is low enough.
@Homey33 its not a full on hit, we should get the leading edge of this and a possible geomagnetic storm and some strong aurora at high latitudes, from what i can see G1 class storm should be the result, time will tell.
I noticed a few weeks ago that they got rid of the "actual" KP index chart and only felft the "estimated" one up so here is a link to the actual and we did have a k5 yesterday. (remove the spaces) h t t p : / / w w w . s w p c . n o a a . g o v / a l e r t s / k -i n d e x . h t m l
Thanks once again, But I have a question, what ever happen to everyone worried about solar flares knocking out satellites and power grids.. That has NOT happened and seems it will not happen.. What size flare is it going to take to take out some power grids like many were claiming last year... just more fear mongering BS or is there any real science showing that could happen..?
@ekphotography we are constantly being spoon fed nonsense to create a panic and fear consciousness with regards to the sun, its almost like we are being conditioned to have a scapegoat and something to blame. the power grid will go down when they switch it off and not from what the sun does. I would question "real science" and its agenda
You mentioned the KP index not being used to determine the severity of solar storms on earth. Why? Who runs this service and is responsible for the management of the information?
@vaisanava the Kp index might have been damaged during the last major geomagnetic storm, its not doing what it should be doing, its not reflecting the true nature of things since Oct 25/Nov 1 CME impacts.

so is a fact that a big coronal mass ejection can produce earthquakes on earth?

@rarelf1974 the Sun is 93 million miles away, it takes 2-3 days of average for these solar winds/charged solar particles to reach the earth

@SolarWatcher Thanks! I'm a novice - better do some of my own research.

At 4:57 a situation from a role play book immediately jumped to my mind:
"A Kleasa!" Tanith screams. "A soul eater!"
Horned head, horned hand...somebody's coming to party...?
Did anyone post something on Facebook again, guys?
