I just realized how Tebaldi is really tense, and a the final high note, she just looks like suffering and squeezes Corelli's hand to end it faster since she wasn't able to keep such high note only with head voice
@lateralex90 Yes because 1966 (the year of this video) Tebaldi was not in her best Maddalena voice, however she is not bad but no more than ok and she pales here beyond Corelli because of the year of the performance. She was the Queen of this role, try her 1957 video with Tucker or her '57 opera recording witg Del Monaco, there she is in endless voice on both Chenier final duets, both from 1957, also in the '60 with Tucker
Stupendous, sublime performances- great artists, the likes of which we will probably never hear again. The true Italian sound, for which these operas were written! Thank you for this great experience.
This is the ultimate in the glory of Italian opera. Corelli and Tebaldi make me super-proud to be of Italian descent. When you see this performance, you forget about all the negative stereotypes that are made about Italians. VIVA ITALIA!
I remember well when this performance aired; the week before, Ed Sullivan announced "Next week Renata Tebaldi will be here in the final duet from Andrea Chenier." No mention of the tenor. And so it went, all week. And then, the announcement on the show, "And now the final duet from Andrea Chenier with Renata Tebaldi and Franco Corelli!" FRANCO CORELLI!!!
In Boston 1966 I was hired as a super by the MET for the performance of Andrea Chenier with Franco Corelli and Renata Tebaldi. I found myself in the wings standing and chatting with Franco Corelli before he went on. I was struck by his friendliness to a student and his calmness before walking out onto the stage. What a magnificent voice.
This video clip was from the Ed Sullivan show in 1966. Corelli was at his peak.
Thank goodness we have some preserved performances of his. To date I do not recall viewing anything from italian television or other places. Anyone know of any?
I disagree. He cuts it a bit after. Look at the reaction by Crespin. But not that I personally find it disturbing. Beacause I love his golden broadly high notes!!!
Fantastic!! It may be the first time I've seen and heard Corelli cutting the last high note when the partner wants to. Nice gesture, because we all know he could've held it for ages...!! But I think he had an enormous respect for La Tebaldi. Just look at the the duet from Verdis "Mascera" with Crespin.
non ci sono parole per questa coppia che ci regala la magia del bel canto la grandezza dell'interpretazione una straordinaria gamma di colori e sfumature! BRAVISSIMI
I seem to remember when I met Sutherland after a 1961 Lucia in Chicago with Bergonzi she looked about five eleven without heels. Yes Tebaldi I was sure was around five nine. I believe you are right, not five eleven as some say.
So she was taller then Callas who was five eight without heels. Del Monaco used built up heels as he was like Tucker at five seven but Tucker told me he refused to wear the heels ever cause they made him feel not comfortable. So thats why she looked so tall next to Richard on the Ed Sullivan show during Chenier duet but he had a powerful voice short or not.
Tebaldi was very tall 5'10" - Mario Del Monaco was always checking her when she sang with him, what kind of shoes she was wearing because he was not very tall unlike Corelli.
La Voz y La Interpretación del Maestro FRANCO CORELLI,Siempre cubren las espectativas que uno esperó de él,pero La Señora,RENATA TEBALDI,No está en Su Mejor Momento. ¡¡¡BRAVO POR SIEMPRE MAESTRO FRANCO CORELLI!!!y Un Respetuoso Recuerdo a la Gloria que fue La Señora RENATA TEBALDI*

May they both rest in peace. They will always be my two favorite opera singers.
I loved their performances at the Met Opera House in New York City. Their singing
really touched my inner most being.

My God! How glorious! The ending of Chenier as the entire opera is superlative.
To hear Corelli and the adored, gifted Tebaldi live must have been someting to savour a lifetime.
I know them so well fom my CD's. I adore them and always will,
Rest well beloved legends of the opera world.

There was always a wonderful chemistry between these two when they sang
at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City when I saw them.
They will always be my favorites along with Lucine Amara.

Renata Tebaldi had the most original voice. She just doesn't sound like the ordinary singers!

Watch the Ballo duett with Regine Crespin on youtube. Corelli cut the last high note when Crespin wanted to as well.

Tebaldi was 5'9'' more exactly 1,76 m without heels.Very tall
Callas was 1,72 m but I think the tallest soprano was Sutherland may be around 1.80 m ?

Renata without heels was a good five eight and here she looks almost as tall as Corelli, still they sound fine, when was it? Mid. 1960's?

Fantastyczny duet. Franco Corelli (dla mnie) był najwybitniejszym Andrea Chenier w historii opery.
