I remember this movie when it came out. I was in my early twenties, and now at 39 all I remember about the film is the basic plot and the woman getting beaten at the end. And I have to say that the woman beating ending destroyed the movie for me. The beating of the woman did nothing to right the wrongs! And as a young woman in the audience I felt that beating. The film took out its anger on femaleness. The Rosewood situation was not because of a woman's lie. Her lie was used as an excuse.

It was a story that needed to be told but the mixture of the fantastic with the grim reality doesn't do it justice. The real story is likely far too depressing for Hollywood to want to depict. There were not superheroes or train of rescue, just a lot of innocent people murdered for no reason, a town burned to the ground, maybe a few good, brave souls who harbored some survivors but far from enough.
Ugh, I feel bad for all the women and children who had to witness all the bloodshed and violence, and had their peaceful lives all screwed up because of a lie. I believe this incident spurned the creation of the phrase "little white lie." This is a great movie. Sad as hell, but a really good movie.

This is a good film. We watched it in my African American Studies class. Its amazing the things people will do to cover up their failures. If someone really believes in God, who sees everything, they are not going to do wrong things He can see and then do MORE wrong things to hide it from other mere humans. It was a story that needed to be told but the mixture of the fantastic with the grim reality doesn't do it justice. The real story is likely far too depressing for Hollywood to want to depict. There were not superheroes or train of rescue, just a lot of innocent people murdered for no reason, a town burned to the ground, maybe a few good, brave souls who harbored some survivors but far from enough.

you're way off on the death toll, the most was atleast 26-27 most historians agree with that number, however the "offical" recorded death toll was 6 black and 2 white. regardless it was still an awful moment in history, and something we can't forget about. however I wish racism didn't excist. if it was up to me everyone would be treated equally. that's how I treat everyone anyway.
