  • Thanks , you just saved me from buying an expensive power supply for my lipo charger. I can get unlimited broken computers at the transfer station(dump)

  • Hm, it should be enough to link the green wire to the case. No need for more than one wire pulled back :)

  • thank you very much for this vid. I order 4x 4000mah Turnigy 2S lipo pack & a turnigy charger. hope this work for me too.

  • Its "twelve point one" NOT "twelve point ten".

  • Conclusion ? you can put a automatic switch in place of manual switch. and where you wanna go with this video ? i dont understand nothing you done ther, cut a bunch of wires, 12VDC ? you could just left the Power suply intact and do your 12VDC. and what i mean with good charge ? faster ? or better ?

  • i modded a PSU but as soon as I add load (charger @ 1A) it shuts down the PSU, any clues? Its a 400W 17V @ 12VDC PSU

  • @obsequeiousphil try to load more than 17V, the Amps doesent matter, the law say more Amps better and faster charging and if the Volatage low or upper than the source you could burn the source or the PSU dies.

  • Does the single yellow wire carry the 10 amp 12 volt load OK (without heating up?) Could two yellow wires (from different harnesses) be attached together if necessary?

  • @marhar2 Yes, it is preferred to wire 2 or more yellow leads in parallel to carry the voltage.

  • @psygn0sis current ;D

  • @heldgop Correct. lol thanks! :)

  • Thanks for posting! Would it be possible to trim or remove all the excess wiring, so the only wires would be the 12 volt and ground?

  • @marhar2 Yes!

  • why don't you just buy a laptop or monitor 12v power adapter capable of 5A, much lighter than a power supply let alone a 60lb car battery,

  • @jsquid526 Much more than 5 amps is needed for lots of the chargers these days. Most PC power supplies will give you 10 amps on the 12 volt circuit.

  • I would like somethink this to be used for car sterio amps

to pump out 500 watts of amps to to the preamp

To make A portable car sterio / computer setup Big Box

  • I'm in the process of converting an old ATX PSU to power my Turnigy Accucel 6 charger. I'm just looking around for ideas of the best way to connect the charger to it. Maybe bananas, I'm not sure yet. Anyway I just thought I'd point out that you said the black wire is -12V, which is isn't. I forget which colour that is but the black is 0v or ground.

  • nice video.I have bought a f-20 that works with a li po 11.1v battery . the problem is that im trying to charge it with the specified charger but it wont charge only a red light [power] is on .the green light doesnt come on .its a winsky 501bc charger .is there any other way i can charge this battery . where im from ,i cannot get another battery r charger n to oder it will be very expensive

  • That's all great, but it's pretty useless for people like me who have no understanding of amps, voltage, wiring, circuits... whatever. It may as well be in another language.

  • you havent show the connection of wires which is which color from charger to battery connection.

  • I pulled an old 12V power supply from a computer and in testing it I am only getting 10.9V on the leads?

Is that just because it is old maybe? Anyway to fix that?

It is 250W PS and the 12V is rated for 10A.

I guess I could charge my 7.2 lipos but not my 11.1V lipos correct?

  • @RCSlashJFREE2003 Normally it shouldnt be any problem, most chargers including the cheap $10 turnigy ones control the input of the voltage somewhere between 10V and 17V DC even the 4-6s chargers only require a 10V-17V DC input.

So this means the charger raises the voltage to what they require its a extremely simple process the only downside is that it will draw a little bit more current doing this but your batterys receive the same and your PSU can easily handle upto 8amps for charging like this

  • I think you mentioned that power supply was a 250W? If so, do you know how large a pack you can charge with one 250W power supply? At least a 6S or two 3S simultaneously? I have several 3s/5700mah packs on a scooter and so have 4 small 3s charger/balancers and one 6S charger/balancer. I have a buddy shipping me two 300W power supplies and am wondering if that will care for all.

  • @dzaster96799

Probably not because of how PSUs are rated.

PSU power is the TOTAL power it is capable when ALL rails are driven at their rated current (which many times cannot be done w/o smoking it).

The reality is that you wont get 300W of +12V out of a 300W PSU, it will depend on what brand it is, how truthful the specs are, and how the mfr. designed each supply rail.

You have to check the PSU label for the specs.

Also, you CANNOT connect multiple PSU outputs directly together.

  • i am totally noob about these electric thing but i really need a 12 volt battery charger for my car.

    so, pls somebody help me.

can i use the power supply of a computer as a charger?

can the power supply charge my car battery?

    thanx....

  • @ThePhilbor

No, you cannot use a PC power supply to successfully charge your car battery. 12 volt car batteries (they are lead acid batteries) need a constant 13.8 volts to charge them, you also need some method of knowing when the battery is fully charged so that you don't overcharge it and boil it dry.

  • Comment removed

  • @1Davo2 well in a pinch, you can. As long as the PSU has a load on it, it can output anywhere between 12.30v to 12.70v @ 12 to 14amps. It's good enough for a float charge but just be careful the battery doesn't get too warm.

  • Hopefully the power supply can hold up to the higher amperage required to charge higher voltage packs as the charger steps up voltages.

  • dang, u must be smart im 12 and i made rc under carrage lits of at back viberator and halloween lights and my video will be up soon 4 that but this seems difficult and you can charge lipos of the wall bro i do it 4 my eartquake 8e lipos 2s so idk comment back dude nice job;)

  • Awsome video ... saved me hours :) thanks

  • TAKE EXTREME CARE NOT TO DROP SOLDER ON THE PSU MOBO OR YOUR GONA SHORT!

  • @staticxmako

Or worse, don't do THIS: My PSU fan bearings were dry; it would go slower, make noise and stop. Knowing exactly which holes the blades were behind, I would by feel, poke an unbent paperclip into the "blade area" and flick the fan and get it running again. I did this many times. Once, leaning over at an awkard angle, going by feel, I poked the clip at an angle and not straight! The loud "BANG", sparks, instant shutdown, tiny wisp of blue smoke, then "the smell" says it all!

  • Good video, but one small mistake - when you were showing the wires as yellow (+12V) and black, it's incorrect to call the black -12V on an atx supply. It is actually 0V, or ground, or the circuit common, because there is 12V difference between the yellow +12V line and the black line. The -12V line on an ATX supply is the blue wire, so there will be 24V between 12V and -12V. However, if you wish, you could simply just refer to the black wire as "the negative wire" if you feel that is more clear

  • @Afrotechmods

Absolutely. I was going to correct him too. Ground is never called "negative x volts" as some rails ARE negative polarity. Ground/Black is always the reference point.

  • I have a 630 watt power supply and puts out 42 amps on the 12volt line. Is this too much? Is there such thing as too much?

  • @yaaddamean No. The charger will only draw as much current as it needs. 42A refers to the max possible current, not what is being drawn at any given time.

  • nice job and what ever happened to analog electronics ?? ugh!

  • hi, i have a question to you; i've got a battery. it's has 5 wires. black+red is the first group and black+red+white is a second group wires comes out of battery. it's says on it: 850mAh and 7.4V. i want to charge it with a power supply. is it possible or not? i'm scared it's may explov :P btw, i guess it's a lipo battery, i'm not sure.

  • Hi Nightflyer, I was wondering if you could help me. I'm new to the rc flight world and you seem very experienced. I just got an Eflite Blade mSR and it is great but I am wondering about the lipo batteries. When the heli starts to drop indicating the battery is low, do I have to fully discharge the batteries before charging them? Or can I just re-charge them from there. I have been doing it just because I thought it was good to do so, but I have been hearing this may actually cause lipos damage.

  • @frankovich213 you can recharge lipos from any level of change because they dont have the memory effect but overdischarging them may damage them but most have a micro controller that shuts them off before they are discharged too much.

  • @xmodsdude Thanks for your help, also do you know much about 12V Gell Cell batteries? I was wondering at what voltage are they fully charged and the voltage for when they need to be charged?

  • @frankovich213 srry i have no experience with gell batteries but google around and you may find something. Also there is a typo in my previous post it should say "you can recharge lipos from any level of charge*"

  • could have used a paper clip for the psu without the on/off switch

  • I did exactly the same thing, I took it apart, unsoldered all the wires then connected them to some terminals i mounted in the case

  • can i use my psu to charge a car bettery? it gives out like 40amps and its an OCZ game xtreme 600watt psu but the battery is a big 600amp with 72ah. will it work if i just connect the +12v wires from the psu (yellow) to the +12v terminal on my car battery and the same with the GND wires to the GND on the battery (black) ? thanks for any help

  • thanks lots of ideas now i can do something with the computer power supply that i have

  • Great vid!!

I am going ti get a turnigy accucel 6 with my b'day money soon. I have a power supply that i might be able to use. It says. 12v 1.5a switching. Does the switching mean anything and is it ok to use?

    Thkans

  • great video love electronics

  • this is cool but very low amp so voltage will drop fast. Look for as pyramid power supply its real 12v and you can get 5 to 100 amp...

  • very very very very very very very very nice work!!!

  • your the best dave...helped me so much....i got a newer pc power supply i got a switch but the van wont run when i swich it on....but when i connect the green and black cable the van is running....thank you....greetings from munich...

  • dude y go to all the expense

  • Technically you are using +12V and GND, not -12! GND and -12V is not same, -12V is white wire and between +12 and -12 is 24V!

  • i have a unit that looks like the one @ 8:00, but it says 22vdc on it darn the luck

  • Why did you leave all the unused wires there? I desoldered all but 3 blacks, 3 reds and 3 yellows and removed them. Then I soldered the remaining wires to red, yellow and black binding posts on the case. Then I fitted a cigarette lighter socket into the hole where the wires used to come out and connected that to the yellow and black. It makes for a much neater job.

  • Do all the yellow wires put out the same amount of amps? Can i just twist all my yellows together, and all my blacks together?

Im waiting on your response before i make the final twist... please dont leave me hangin!

  • @Lje123 why ??? took one black and one yellow....

  • got an olde PC 12vdc 5A supply jumped from the green to a black and a yellow and black running to my eflight 1.8A lipo charger but my supply only was reading 11.74 output - guess ill need to get a better supply --took 3 minutes for the brushless fan in the supply to quit vibrating but it did - i think its a lot faster @ 5 A. than the little Dynam 1.5 A supply was - even tho im only getting 11.74 VDC out of it -

  • Don't throw out that supply! The 12V won't reach normal voltage without some load on the 5V supply. Just put a 4.7 ohm 10W resistor across the 5V (red and black) and you'll get 12V off the yellow-black.

  • @Geoffh777 yep- its pulling my lipos up to whatever theyll take - some stop at 12.4 and some ,(my good ones), go up to 12.6 - thanks Dave and Geoff-- what do you use the red one for Geoff? i cut off all the xtra wires coming out of the box

  • loser

  • 7:09 the black wire is not (-)12, the black wire is common......

  • i got a ATX PSU & it doesn't start .... i got a switch & doesn't move they are both brand new what am i doing wrong do i need to short the green + black?

  • @hayabusafmw Yes! Some PSU's needs a load to stay on aswell.

  • @hayabusafmw yes yes yes yes yes..... lol

  • Thanks Nightflyer...

I did place a 10watt/10ohm resister to my 5V rail and it did boost my 12v rail to about 12.4v or so.

Maybe I could have just made a adapter on 5v to a USB plug and power whatever USB item to place a load on there too.

    Anyways, thanks again.

  • gloucesteharry you have been selected to win a yrs subscription to are gay boys in bondage full color mag all you need do is pay the postage we take visa if you would kindly let us know your bank details lol

  • glouceseharry has no friends and loves sex with iceberg lettuce

  • Will the triton charger work with a np-25 ni-mh

    battery as to charge it.its a 12V 4.0Ah

  • Oh yeah, every PSU these days have switch in the back, only the really old PSU doesn't or some of those brandname PSU used in system like Dell don't have switches.

Unlike some of other PC ATX PSU convertions you have seen, resistor is not needed, you simply connect the charger to your 12v molex of your PSU.

Another important note is... depending on the load 12v can go below 12v. Keep that in mind.

In my personal PC, I overclock my system and 12v dip down to 11.8'ish.

    So be sure monitor it.

  • Some Tips for buying a ATX PSU!

There are two type of 12v rail in PSU these days. Most PSU these days use multiple 12v rails with each providing around 15A or so depending on manufacturers (labelled like 12v1, 12v2, etc...). Also there are PSU with single 12v rail. I personally have in my computer is 750W PSU with single 12v rail with 60A.

Which every type you get, as long as 12v rail(s) can provide enough Amps to allow you to power multiple chargers at once.

    Enjoy.

  • if your worried about electrocution, get some rubber gloves. also to the guy that wanted a manual charger, i make a realy nice one with a light bulb, and a diode. the bulbs wattage controls how many amps you charge with,,,,100w = .4 amps. and so on. chears

  • wat is 12vdc?but urs is 12v no amp?

  • i got 1 power supply from pc almost like urs but so many wires duno which 1 ...i need 12v 8amps

  • what does triton do?

  • people that are planning on trying this, if you don't have electronics experience DON'T. There is enough power stored in a computer Power supply to kill you even if it's unplugged

  • You don't need electronics experience to know not to open one. As long as you don't you're completely safe. Ignore fireraisr.

  • all i'm saying is if they aren't familiar with the components this is a bad first project, touching the wrong thing will get you killed.

  • @fireraisr

Not at all, like I said. If you don't open the case you're completely safe. Any one of those wires will only put out 12V with a maximum potential of 24V which is much much less than the 50v required to send just 1ma through you.

  • you must have missed the second half of the vid where he OPENED THE CASE. also i don't care if it hits you with 12v or 50v, Amps kill not volts. a typical computer power supply has between 20-30 amps running through it, some of that is stored in capacitors and even unplugged has enough energy to stop the heart. All i'm saying is don't be careless and do your homework first.

  • @fireraisr it is the amount of amps that flow through you that kill you. However, you need at least 50 volts to push enough amps just 1ma though your body. At 12v you would never get 20 amps through anyone's body. Unless they were made out of copper lol.

  • waist of time

  • FAIL

Your a "waste". Note the correct spelling from an educated individual...

  • If you are charging LiPo's, you can do what I did and go to wal-mart and buy a boat/atv charger which is 12V and puts out 10A, costs about $50

  • Any 12 volt supply will power on a charger but if you need to charge 5000 mAh lipo batteries you need much higher AMPS at the power supply to charge the battery properly and efficiently.

  • ...However, they still can and will be charged to 100%, but it takes a little longer. And that might be more healthy for the LiPo battery in any situation.

  • hey dave my power supply got more then 1 black wire mine got aswitch on power supply when i turn on it did not power up

  • thi si happening because the switch cuts power to the AC lines coming into the ps, so you still nedd to jump the green wire for any power supply to come on, and its okay if you have more than one ground, use any of them ,they all serve thae same purpose. this video is qwsome but doesnt explain that most power supplys that do have switches still need to have the green and black wires jumped, unlike his switched power supply were he didnt need to do that. hope that helps!

  • thanks it works just takes a little longer to charge but hey it works

  • What's the song? Composer & Title?

  • you kinda sound like microsoft sam, lol.

    Great vid btw.

  • yellow +12V, black -12V= 24V output..? lol

  • black is common ground not -12V some other clored wire is neg 12 lol

  • Night,

TY for the vid. Great info. Quick question I am pulling 11.74v atm with my 200watt PS. When I put a load on the 5v side I can pull 11.84. I am not running any resistors. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? Thanks for the help

  • crappy power supply dude. buy a new one, such as a cool power or an msi.

  • That is because the PSU (computer power supply) is meant to power a computer, and in normal operation this means a combined power draw on both 5V (red) and 12V (yellow) lines.

If drawing only the 12V's is unsafe or might damage the PSU or not, I DON'T KNOW!

  • Ha Ha same idea I used for my 15" LCD TV :o)

  • excellent info..i like the switch idea !!

  • Thanks kindly.

  • Thanks kindly.

  • did u know that the xbox 360 pw supply puts out 12v at 12.2amps

  • No. That is good.

  • you can use 9V battery with aligator clips with a charger to charge your LiPo battery i use 2 9V when im out in the field without a car

  • There is no way you can charge a 1800 mah 11.1 volt dc battery with a 9v battery. Sorry to disagree with you.

  • its abvious you dont know what i mean

take a 9V and use aligator clips to hook it up to the lipo charger and when its done the battery will bee 9V charged then you have 2V left you have to charge...

  • Dave, what charger would you recomend for LiPo 2S 5200 mAh 7.4V or 11.1V 3S that is over 5000mAh? Thank You

  • Smaller chargers work for that battery, it just takes longer. I like my Thunder Ac6 CHARGER the best, and it would work perfect.

See my video on it and good luck.

  • I just bought (out of recommendation) the Hyperion EOS0615i DUO3, which is state-of-the-art. It takes everything up to 6S (12S), and is an advanced 2x180Watts digital charger. All types of batteries (2x6S) and power supplies (<28V) are supported. Look it up :)

I use it for ballanced/synced charging of my two 2S 5500mAh LiPos.

  • Hi Dave, just a question regarding the computer power supply. Is it possible to run multiple chargers off the same supply? Would you use the same source wire or another accessory wire from the supply? I have 2 extra eflite chargers(Blade400) and 1 parkzone charger, all with no AC adapters.

Thanks, you are an inspiration to all up and coming pilots! Keep up the great work!

  • Yes, you can use the same wire. There are multiple 5 volt supply wires however on most PS's. That should work fine, long as the PS has enough supply amperage.

  • Hello NightFlier.

Very nice videos. all of them :) i might have some questions once i get a heil, just got an easystar a few weeks ago, ill stick to it for now :)

About you powersupply, If you place a 10Ohm 10Watt resistor between Black(Ground) and +5V(Red) the power supply will be more stable when under load :)

((and a little correction, -12v is the Blue wire. if you want you can use +12v(Yellow) and -12v(Blue) to get 24volts ))

  • Well said. Thanks for the extra tips.

  • Colours can vary between different makes and models too, so always double-check the colours or the different wires before connecting it to anything!

Also, like Dream said, you can get different voltages by trying different voltages. Example, +12V and -5V would give you 17V, or +5V and -5V would give you 10V etc.

  • No no, please DON'T use -12 or -5V to get 24/17V!

They are used by the motherboard (as in a PC) for anvanced voltage manipulation stuff, and DO NOT carry any Amperes of any use for charging batteries! They are rated in mAmps.

  • true not much A but it's handy non the less :)

mine is rated at .5A on -12v and -5v.

  • Nice work. I couldn´t help but notice that you sound a lot like Michael Ironside. Funny coincidence! Greetings from a swedish model airplane flyer!

  • Thanks very kindly and for the great compliment. Welcome Sweden. ~Dave

  • I noticed the ring on your finger. What's the wife think of your hobby? I can't go in the garage for 5 minutes without being interrupted.

  • Haha. Well I was doing this long before her and she lets me be with it. I will have lots of summer projects in the yard when spring comes.

  • Looking at this makes me want a gas plane.

  • I flew gas for 51 years. There is more support equipment required and it is more costly and messy and loud. I like it a lot, but dont think it is less complicated. You have to know how to get the right sound out of gas or it will quit in the air. Electrics have no engine tuning requirements.

  • i have a lipo battery it is broken i use it for my rc car and the plug came right off HELP!

  • Well if you have to solder a new plug on, otherwise take it to a hobby store and ask them to do it.

  • Generally a square plug with 2 yellow+ and 2 black- can be used as a 12v source. I use 2 yellows and 2 blacks. Most computer power supplies(PS) will provide 10amps at 12v which is enough for most lipo chargers. If your power switch does not turn on the PS (fan should start) then you may have to ground the green wire. As long as there is a power switch (120v) you can ground out the green wire to the chassis properly, otherwise switch the green wire. Remove the excess wires that lead from the PS

  • Exactly.

  • To charge the blade 400 how many amps do you need.

  • Battery's are like gas tanks. They hold milliamps that you need to fill it up. If you have a 2000 mah battery and a 500 ma charger it would take 2 hours to charge it at 500 mah an hour. All battery's are the same, but lipos need special chargers. This is a power supply to run those chargers, not actually charge the battery.

  • love the video but i need a little help.

i have an allied a300atx power supply with a switch on the back.

when i turn it on, the fan does nothing and using my voltmeter, i tested many different combinations of wires to see if there was any voltage. whenever i touch the green or purple wire and another wire, i get 5v. i have tired every combination possible.

is there a way to get 12v?

  • You should be able to touch the green and black wire together to trigger the switch.

  • i used some simple wire and created a contact between the green and black wire on the main plug and flipped the power switch. to my surprise, i heard the fa kick on and i now get 12V from any plug with a yellow and black plug.

    thank you

  • Yea! Good for you.

  • This a great idea thanks

  • Thanks kindly.

  • Thanks.

  • is it not necessary to put a load on the switching wires (green and black)?

  • Not in my case.

  • thanks for the great idea i always love DIY stuff

  • Thanks very much. glad you like.

  • Thanks kindly. Stay tuned for the Mini Electric Screwdriver vid.

  • Cool NightFlyer,

    I made one too.

I dont use mine for rc cars, just benchtop lab use.

You have great knowlage and good skills.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Eddie

  • Thanks very kindly.

  • Thanks very kindly. I appreciate your comments.

  • Hey night flyer where can i get one of those power supplys.

  • Its from an old computer.

  • How on gods earth do you have time to earn a living man,,really,,i am so impressed,,wish i had your life man,,all i ever wanted to do in my life is just what you do now,,magic my man,,love what you do,,your almost as clever as me man,heheeheheheheh..love the vids,,yes,,i will make bad comments about you, when i feel i should,,but otherwise,,great to see.

  • Thanks, Well I'm retired now and it seems that this is now how I make my living while the snow is flying around here for 6 months a year.

I spent 33 years in the Marine Corps, plus ran a company of my own for 20 years in California. Time for a break, ya know, before it is too late. LOL.

  • can lipo battery use regular nimh nicd charger? thanks

  • Absolutely not. Dont try or you will have a fire.

  • thanks alot

  • Hi Dave, first of all thanks for great vids and answering many questions for us.

I have few question, How many times can I charge Blade 400 battery from car battery before not enough juice left to crank the car?

Also How do I know what Amperage am I getting from 12V output from PSU? I have seen the label on it and it shows both "-12v 0.8A Max", and "+12v 18A Max".

    thanks

  • Your welcome. Think of your battery as a gas tank and the car battery as the gas station.

If the gas station holds 100 amps of power, and your battery tank holds 1 amp, you can charge it 100 times, but I dunno how low it would go before your car would not start. I dont think you could kill it in a day, as maybe you could charge it only 8-10 times considering an hour to charge.

Yes the negative voltage, (no concern to you) is 800 mah, and the +12 is 18 amps. (1800 mah), plenty to run a charger.

  • Yes, that should work just fine. Red is positive 12 volts, but it never hurts to check with a voltmeter, to make sure your getting the full 12 vdc from your power supply.

  • Thanks for replying but I meant on the ac adapter after I cut the wire

  • what ac adaptor? The computer supply in this video puts out 12 v DC. It is used to run the charger. Usually the center pin is +, so use a ohm meter or a light bulb and battery to see which wire is what. THe stripe on the wire is usually + also. After hooking it up, make sure to test the tip, to make sure polarity is right. YOu have a 50/50 chance. Good luck.

  • Thanks but im talking about the 12v eflite ac adapter for the stock charger

  • Hi, great vid. Can I use the 12v 3amp power supply for a stock blade 400 charger to power a polycharger 4? Also, how do I know which is pos. on 12v power supply? Thanks in advance

  • can you also charge a mini rc hellicopter with it i have the silverlit tandemz 1 i hate it to charge it with the controler

  • You do not use this 12V supply to charge. This power supply only runs the chargers you have.

Unfortunately, there are no external chargers other than the TX for your kind of heli.
