  • They try to justify the bailouts by saying if they don't do it, the cost on the country will be even greater, since the people that lose their jobs will be on unemployment insurance income.. but simply bailing them out sends a terrible message, and things will only end up where they are today again one day.

  • Wow, Lots of escalation since we talked about this last Eric. Here in Germany i will sum it up: Were fucked. Anyway its frightening to see how a couple of bankers can cause this kind of turmoil throughout the planet, and to think these guys are getting bailed out. Anybody paying attention to the men behind the curtain ?

  • Well, I have to be quite honest, I would suppose our government would be as confusing to you as it is to us. On the news on YT they use terms we don't.

You see, I don't know if you're ready to accept this, because our U.S. Congress cannot be suspended by our President, they cannot be shut out as easily, as a result they are bought off, and it is becoming more apparent to us.

They have an agenda, we've been warned here of changes. Some say a joining of the three countries...

  • It's obvious our Congressmen and President here in the U.S. have been bought off. We do not have the crown officially telling us how to run our government. So it solely depends on them.

They're spending like drunken sailors, I believe mortgaging our future by swamping taxes we can't hope to pay off.

Same thing here, bailouts for GM, banks, etc. There is an 'invisible hand' but it's not nature, it's big bucks. All countries tied to the dollar or intn'l. banks are going to suffer depression.

  • Because of connections between the other countries, perhaps minus Mexico, we're really going down, hard. I can't describe if you don't know about it. There will probably be widespread homelessness, as the Great Depression here, but they've got their hands in many major countries now. I don't know if you've ever had a serious depression there -- ?? Have you?

  • One point Mark. The Crown does not "officially" tell Canadians how to run their govt. Like in Australia, NZ, the office is purely ceremonial, with The Queen(thru her reps) almost always taking the advice of her prime minister. She does, however, have reserve powers to invite the opposition parties to form a govt. if her present govt does not have the numbers in Parliament to rule. This may well happen in Canada in a month's time. It happened in Australia in 1974 and caused quite a controversy.

  • Sure.

I don't know about Canadian government, ours is more like Greek. I think. I don't know if you know about U.S. government??? You may. We may be a little of the oddball over here. We don't know generally about other countries. We're especially getting like the closed Russian government of the past.

I just heard a politician say, in Canada, that word would have to come from the crown, or something like that, I think about overthrowing the government.

  • NO NO never "joining of the three countries". Economically maybe (they are now), but NEVER in the full political sense. All that would mean is that the USA would gobble up both Canada and Mexico totally, extinguishing national sovereignty, and consigning both to the status of pure vassal states. They'd become mere adjuncts milked for their natural resources and labour, irrelevancies like Utah or Maine.

    NO!!

Always the True North strong and free!

Always always The Maple Leaf Forever!!

  • I hope not too.

They're already destroying this country; they're trying to change the Constitution (U.S) to validate what they're trying to do.

That's what the post-Civil War laws were about; that's why they called them 'states'; they were considered foreign countries joined for protection, then they were usurped. Little known fact.

  • Thanks Phil :)

  • It is hard to think that so many countries are captive by their governments (including the US, of course). All of this political, economical and financial "crisis" is superficial, as it is based on superficial value (the value of the dollar/other currency that isn't backed by real value). Unfortunately, there's no easy way to simply "forget the governments" and be self sufficient (I.E. build strong local communities). I wish that weren't true, but I also have faith in people to change quickly.

  • You ask what's going on in other countries. Financial problems here in New Zealand too. Job losses, falling house prices. A National (conservative) govt has just been voted in ater a decade of Labour (liberal) rule, with a substantial majority. Opposition parties could not topple them. Too early to know how they'll act, but probably more moderate than Harper.

We have proportional voting here, like Germany. Called MMP. We have 2 votes. Canada might like to consider such an innovation, maybe.

  • There was a referendum vote last year in Ontario for just that. Barely anyone went for it, or even understood it for that matter. I however would've liked to have it, to see if a MMP would prove beneficial to our political system.

  • Thanks mate for making this. So refreshing to hear North American politics being discussed without one single reference to Obama, Clinton or McCain. Some of the issues you mention I can relate to, some of course are uniquely Canadian (like whatever we do, we must not upset Quebec!). Seems to me that Harper's gambling all on this new budget he's introducing late Jan. Backtrack on previous policy, and stimulate auto and forestry. Then go to the people AGAIN! and hope like hell for the 50+.

  • Then I suppose you have to question how stable a proposed coalition govt would be. They hated each other during the election campaign, then suddenly fall in love when they sniff the possiblity of power. Control of The Commons is a mighty aphrodisiac indeed. But is simply hating the Conservatives enough?

Have The Bloc ever held federal power before? If I was a western Canadian, I think I'd find that unsettling, and it would likely fan the flames of my own latent separatist desires. Comments?

  • The Bloc have never held federal power before, however they do have a large chunk of Canada's support, only in Quebec though. You don't even have the option to vote for them on your voting ballot card anywhere outside of Quebec. So what right do they have to even compete in a federal election? Ages ago, in our country's infancy, the French had a lot more pull, but times have changed, and in my opinion equal and proportional reprentation should triumph over what we have right now.

  • As I am definitely not a Harper supporter, I would prefer this coalition, however I have yet to hear any specifics on the new coalition platform, what will be done economically in Canada, and until we do, we can only speculate on the outcome. As for the Bloc, they are getting something out of it; they wouldn't sign on to a coalition agreement with no regard to considering their own interests. They all want the Conservatives out, so that could be reason enough, but we can't be sure until its over

  • Do you understand what support means? There only going to support. This was only and still may happen to be a Liberal and NDP coalition with block support. Bloc is just there to vote on what the coalition would have done. You do realize Harper and his Conartist would have had the same power too? HARPER has been there for more then 6 weeks if he really cared about the job losses and Canadian economy he would have had give us a better economic plan. Prorogue is nothing more then saving his job.
