One thing is true, Don's vocal tone has remained with him throughout his entire life. Gordon's sort of lost his voice over the years as it sounded back in the 70's. Don still sounds amazingly good at his age. He's remained consistent throughout his career.

HEY! Gordon Lightfoot is alive and well and innocent. He wrote this song after seeing an old black and white movie about a haunted wishing well and thought what a great idea for a song. Select verses are meant to soar, and his Cash's voice just sounds sore.

Some of Cash's final recordings seemed a bit contrived and less inspired. His rendition of this song to me is to me one of them.
