  • nobody loves him like I do...;)

  • what year was this done? and who did the original? there are like 25 versions

  • @16fraserthegreat The origional singer and writer is Godon Lightfoot 1971, check him out, he has hundreds of masterpieces

  • @2dogsaf I hate this damn song !

  • I love Don williams...but the Lightfoot version is better. You can feel it more in Lightfoot's voice...almost like he is not singing it, but breathing it in and out.

  • 10 dislikes? how could ya not like this

  • Don Williams is the best singer ever in my thoughts. His music touches my soul

  • What's that hat called?

  • Don Williams is the Lionel Ritchie of country music.

  • i just cant get it back :( i wsh i cud

  • I like this version better.. Lightfoot's is great but This one hits me more profoundly then the original does..

  • not bad but........

  • its impossible for don williams to do a bad remake. he has IT.

  • Sorry its crap. There only one gordon lightfoot

  • Awesome job. He is the only other person I like doing this song besides Gordon obviously! I never get tired of this song, ever.....

  • Not as good as Gordo

  • Brilliant version. Haven't heard this version from Don before.

  • He's on tour this tear. go to his website.

  • This is one of the best versions I have heard. Even better than Gordon. I have many of his recordings, but never heard this one before. Any way he is one of my favourite recording artists. Great!

  • Is this from one of his 70's albums, or a more recent recording? I ask, b/c I know he did release an album of covers at some point in the mid-90's.

  • beautiful version, but I like Gordon's version better. :)

  • This song could have been written about me and my ex-wife. I haven't thought of this song in years. Was doing a search this morning for Don Williams songs and ran across it.

  • Love both Don's and Gordon's versions. Where Gordon makes the song haunting almost, Don makes it mournful. Both great!

  • always gives me chills great song

  • There both good Don and Gordon are the best they broke the cast when they where given to this earth they still got it to

  • good version

  • pure class singer of this great song brilliant!!!!!!!

  • Very good job on a great song!

  • Very nice.. he does the song very well.. thank-you for posting :)

  • One thing is true, Don's vocal tone has remained with him throughout his entire life. Gordon's sort of lost his voice over the years as it sounded back in the 70's. Don still sounds amazingly good at his age. He's remained consistent throughout his career.

  • Don is singing someone else's song. Gordon is sharing a painful chapter in his life. How could any sane person claim Don's version is "better"?

  • @JOYisREAL Maybe not "better" in a sense of words, but Don's version is definitely good musically. He does have a different vocal tone than Gordon Lightfoot, no doubt, but i'm sure he sang the cover with Gordon's blessing, otherwise it would not have been permitted to be done.

  • @JOYisREAL Don does fine, but Gords version is way better

  • One of the greatest voices of all time. Sadly Don retired and doesn't do performances anymore.

  • @joevs21001 don is performing at the american music theater in lancaster, pa this coming august.

  • @joevs21001 Thanks for the info. I actually live pretty close to Lancaster, PA, thanks, I might have to check that show out.

  • i'm going tosee Gordon tonight in Greensboro N.C. if there is aversion that Gordon would sit and listen to other than his own,im sure it would be this one. Don will be in Greensboro March 24 ihope i can make that one too

  • @2dogsaf ive seen him twice in knoxville tn. met him after shows too. i hope to be able to make massey hall. even if i have to hitchhike

  • This Is really good, but Lightfoot is just perfection to this song, but this is pretty close

  • geweldig nummer

  • Just very nice,like all his songs,thx 4 uploading...

  • he is the most amazing male singer alive

  • hey don ######!

  • I love Gordon, but my boy Don takes the cake with his rendition

  • Gordon Lightfoot ...Don Williams...both Great's in my views...my view of the world wouldn't be the some without either one of them!...

  • Nobody does it better. This is Awsome.... 1965 Adrian Cronauer said"make love, not war"! Ya...Listen this song. baukiki ,Thank you...

  • velvet baritone pipes on this guy..... smooth as silk

  • One of my favorite singers singing a song by one of my favorite songwriters . Love this guy

  • i like don and gordon lightfoot both, they have two of the most touching voices..

  • WILL YOU MARRY ME, DON?

  • great stuff!!

  • I am sure Gordon is happy that my brother Don cut this song. I am sure.

  • @AustinRogers1

Well, I'm not Mr. Lightfoot but I'm glad your brother cut this.

My wife used to fall asleep listening to her dad and uncles singing your brother's songs. Even now I know that I can snap her out of a sad mood by playing one of Don's songs.

Thank you brother for me, it's the little things like that that help in the very hard work that is a good marriage.

  • @AustinRogers1 This song reminds me of being a little boy who lived for going for a ride with PaPaw...i was still innocent, had never had my heart broken, had no concept of how short life is, and i was sitting next to my Grandpa, who was God in my eyes, as he sang it wholeheartedly on the way to the farm to catch the turtles that came out of the creek to munch our lettuce lol. I love your brother's music- it was played at PaPaw's funeral and still makes me feel loved to hear it<3

  • Good cover but I like Gordon Lightfoot better.

  • Lov'n this song

  • lots of people have recorded this song only don could do it as well as lightfoot

  • HEY! Gordon Lightfoot is alive and well and innocent. He wrote this song after seeing an old black and white movie about a haunted wishing well and thought what a great idea for a song. I know this because I am CANADIAN and have been to several of his concerts, and I just received my ticket to his concert next May 21, 2011. Sheesh! The stuff you find on here. Really.

  • Gordon Lightfood opend the book, Don Williams nailed it and Johnny Cash closed the book on this song. It's all a mather of taste, I'm not saying anyones best. Although I think the original deserves the most credit (in any case) I personally like Johnny Cash his version best.

  • I'm thankful for both Don Williams and Gordon Lightfoot.

  • heroes often fail. best part for some reason =)

  • Great song. Did he write it? or Gordon?

  • I have always loved this song by Gordon , but I have always loved Don Williams. And in all the concerts I have seen, I have never seen him do this song. This is awesome

  • My Dad's favourite singer. Always make me cry when I hear him.

  • He sings from his heart. His words are soo pure and anyone can relate to his messages even though it is a Gordon Lightfoot song. Don williams just brings it out to me in a different way. Nothing but the upmost respect. My father introduced me to some of his songs and i can't stop listening to them.

  • I love Don Williams' voice & how he does this. It's beautiful. But, if not for Gordon Lightfoot, we wouldn't even have this song to enjoy.

  • Love this Great Gordon Lightfoot song..... Don Williams is.......The Gentle Giant.......:)

  • Who would have thought anyone other than Gorden Lightfoot could sing this song, absolutely beautiful

  • My favorite country singer ever. long life Don.

  • @ADEL4B Amen to that

  • Why isn't this fine singer on television ? This man is a great singer with a unique style. All you see on television these days are boys that make noise, not artist that make music. Our country men needs more men singers like him.

  • @JrAndrewKent A speller you ain't !

  • Wow "The Gentle Giant" is just amazing there is just nothing more to say

  • Can someone tell who is better? Gordon Lightfoot or Don here?

  • Comment removed

  • @originalpauper Gordons the mainman.

  • @originalpauper That would be The Gentle Giant (Don Williams)

  • @originalpauper that would be The Gentle Giant (Don Williams) and that's coming from a canadian

  • there is only one better version, thatsgordon lightfoot's original. this is even brtter than gordons more recent remakes

  • Don's Songs are so moving.

  • pekná verzia peknej piesne

  • So sweet....so wise........Love the Giant.......

  • Reminds me of Festus.

  • deft the best song by the best singer

  • <3 :')

    BEAUTIFUL

    <3 :')

  • This man is a good singer. Is he a Texan or from Nashville? I never saw him on Television. Singer Elvin Rock

  • @elvinrock on May 27, 1939 Don Williams was born in Floydada, Texas, U.S.

  • @elvinrock Not sure, but no matter what, he's an honorary Okie after writin' a hit like Tulsa Time !! Long live the Gentle Giant & his pork chops !!!

  • my dad loves these songs and weve past 2 hr now lisining to his songs even when u think ist super boring its not cuz just hering him sing the songs and smile makes it all worth wile

  • Fantastic cover to Gordon's song. His voice treats this great song like no other cover.

  • WOW!! He really nailed this!

  • Ah the gentle giant does it again...

  • @cmmorty99 There are very few people within the country & western industry here in the USA who can even hold a candle to Gordon Lightfoot. They would include Kenny Rogers, willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Don Williams.

  • God bless Texa(n)s...

  • Don and Gordon are both very good on this song, don't know which one I like better.

  • better than Gordon....

  • @d1sailer Wrongo bongo. This is very, very far from being better than GL's recording.

  • this was the america i like

  • @dudabraga Maybe she has a different look, some added color, but underneath she is still the beauty she always was. Perhaps you have to look a little closer now days, but you can find her if you try...

  • This is a great song and Williams is a great singer but Gordon Lightfoot is much better, you can't compare him with Don.

  • Love him And What he sings about.

  • Great song and Don did a great cover of it IMHO.

    What a voice.

  • MY GIRLFRIEND told me bout Don Williams!! i didn't know him!! it's a real revelation for me!! very chraming voice and words for the heart and the spirit too!!

    Peter Stevens

  • Awesome! they call him the gentle giant, what a voice

  • I first heard this song on "trigger happy tv" and instantly fell in love with it!

  • dom wiliams is beatiful song ,the best song ,il beleve

  • true magic.

  • if you could read my mind. lovely darling. thank you

  • Just found out recently that Don Williams was part of "Pozo Seco" singers back around 1970- their lps were among the first I taped for play aboard a DD.

Same avoidance of "in your face" and excess. Plus, Susan Taylor.

    A voice of sanity.

  • Beautiful!

  • he's got a clear nice voice wonderful so smooth no need to shout just soo smooth love it.....

  • Don is the best...his talent...what a man, how they should be...

  • highwaymano12. 2nd that, not heard this before.

  • don williams will never get the recognition he deserves. he is the best at what he does.

  • This puts johnny cash to shame.

  • Really nothing Don sings that I don't love.

  • Comment removed

  • I like this version but I love the original one of Gordon Lightfoot.

  • Don Williams is singing this song, not Cash. Only a few of Don's songs didn't reach the top ten. Cash couldn't touch him, and only his addictions made him public more than his music. You are the Man Don and your heart as well as your songs is warm and beautiful..

  • @singmeluv I respect your opinion, but you know nothing about Johnny Cash.

  • @singmeluv i agree. i find cash average at best. don williams forever

  • one of the greatest singer with greatest songs!

"Don Williams will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame during a formal ceremony later this year. The prestigious announcement was made Tuesday morning (Feb. 23) by the Country Music Association."

motion for a comeback on stage!

  • yeah this is a pro singer.. check us out.. were up and coming band.. hes a legend

  • I've heard a couple of Don's recordings before, and he's always impressed me. This is no exception. His interpretation of Gordon's classic tune is really beautiful.

  • luv this one....brings back good oldmemories....thanx alot...

  • Very nicely done. I' ve never heard Don before. He softens the edges that both Gordon and Johnny have when they sing this. BTW, I sing this song to my daughter every night at bedtime, and this version is the closest to how I sing it :-D

  • Don Williams aka The Gentle Giant. you missed alot. check him out

  • U gotta be very careful when U take on the solid talent of others and attempt their music & songs. I just hate it when ppl/ companies adapt material they should have left alone. Ian Tyson is solid and original and has the voice and talent to prove it. k d lang, the planets perfection in a female voice, can sing anyones song! A lot can try, but a classic version should be left alone.

  • This is a really beautiful version of Gordon Lightfoot's signature song. Takes a lot of courage to step up to the plate to sing a song that someone else has "

branded" and Don sure does it justice. Johnny Cash's version is poignant in its own way and courageous on his part to sing it on his American Recordings series, which was at the tail end of his life after his wife, June Carter, passed away. Johnny's interpretation has its very own beauty considering the point in his life.

  • Why the pre-occupation with Johnny Cash?

This is Don Williams singing Gordon Lightfoot's classic and doing it rather well.

  • this is the very best version of this song, Lightfoot's is amazing, but this is absolutely touching, Don is the best... a great legend, and if someone out there has not heard his voice they are truly missing out.

  • frebert should see a doctor. not only to open up his ears, but more seriously: to open up his heart...

  • If you could read my mind that would be kinda creapy.. but i know one thing. We need Don back!

  • Top 3 singers to do this Song:

    Gordon Lightfoot

    Johnny Cash

    Don Williams.

  • Cash's version is pathetic. As I listened to it I kept thinking if he was performing it on American Idol he would make the show, but only as the joke artist to be laughed at by all. His was truly a sad and horrible rendition of a great song.

  • have to agree here love johnny cash , but he crucifies this song , lightfoot ftw

  • what a horrible thing to say about such a great man, he was oviously at a very old age when he recorded, kinda like the song hurt, but it was not pathedic, whats is pathedic is you posting such negitive thins about elderly people who have given so much to music and charitys and so on........

  • @danescott1962 I thought Johnny did an incredible job with Hurt, as he did with any cover I ever heard by him. I've not heard him sing this, but I can't see him butchering it.

  • @frebert If you think about it, it took alot of guts to do that. Maybe it was his way of saying goodbye. 'course now that I'm over 50 I can appreciate that kinda stuff. None of us knows when their end will come. I just hope to live that long & be able to feed myself & not be in a diaper, let alone sing & produce music. Far be it from me to criticize one who traveled as far, high & low as the immortal Johnny Cash, all in one lifetime. Long live the Man in Black...the Original Outlaw!! Souie!!

  • @Dash171 Johnny Cash should not have recorded this song, its just disturbing the way he did it.

Select verses are meant to soar, and his Cash's voice just sounds sore.

Some of Cash's final recordings seemed a bit contrived and less inspired. His rendition of this song to me is to me one of them.

  • Johnny Cash sang this when he was close to death. His version has a life of its own and is beautiful in its own way. its not a dick length contest. Just different versions of a beautiful song.

  • @immovable1, my kids are 18, 20, and 22. Cash's last recordings opened their eyes to some music they would have not known. They love all of his music, Cash transended more generations than most will ever hope to! RIP the man in Black.

  • Statistics show that 100% of the criminals put to death, never commit another crime. Don Williams is the best!

  • @lucky8274 Lucky8274 Just to throw in my 2 cents, I have a real problem with a person who molests & kills someone, then is allowed to sit around watching TV, enjoying free room & board; the next 30 or so WorldSeries & SuperBowls; eating ReeceCups, free condoms w/free medical-dental care the rest of their life, as their victim is gone forever. What we really need is appeals process reform to shorten it. THEN we can put these creeps to sleep for good as it was intended. THAT will save $ !

  • Don't get me wrong Don Williams is great but goosebumps and throat lumps only happen for me when Lightfoot sings it............

  • Agreed nobody can beat Gordon with his amazing voice; however this version is VERY good

  • True that... Always good to hear from the great state of Texas......... Never lose that Southern Pride! Might sound funny coming from a Canadian but I sure wish Canada was more like Texas in some ways... Need the right to pack the hogleg for protection nowadays. Peace...........

  • Why thanks buddy I ussually dont think the average canadian to be praisin texas and supportin southernpride, and yes everyone needs the right to death penalty its a lot more effective then keepin someone in jail for a lifetime

  • Nicely put... I ain't the "average Canadian". They tend to be too bleeding heart for my liking....freaken sheep! They want us all to feel guilty for living on the land that used to belong to the indians..................sheesh! Now it belongs to the east indians, and chinese and every other ese there is .......... anyhow great song!

  • @graidstin you think you'd still speak like that if you were on death penalty?

wow, with people as compassionate as you the future really looks bright...

  • @niobe00 ok so your sayin that if i kidnapped, raped and killed a young child I still shouldnt get the death penalty, or if I brutally stabed a family to death and ground up their bodys to meat I still shouldnt get the death penalty. Some people deserve to die for the atrocities they commit instead of rotting in a jail eatin up tax payers dollars. Now im a pretty compasionate person just not to phsycopath serial killers

  • this is beautiful song.

i can't imagine that this sort of commentary belongs associated with it

  • 100 percent correct, ty, there are still people with some mental capacity

  • Hey niobe00 With bleeding hearts like you the future really looks fucked to me.... If I could read your mind.............

  • @kyuss4me Wait just a minute. Are you saying Gordon Lightfoot wrote this song while he was on Death Row?! Amazing !! I guess that could be. After all he IS Canadian isn't he? Wow, so much talent up there in the Great White North!! Bob & Doug, Anne Murray, Gordon Lightfoot AND SCTV !! Gone are the good ol' days my friends. Long live John Candy !!

  • @StevieB1362 You forgot The Trailer Park Boys you fat fuck American idiot.

  • dont allow yourself to be put in a position to be on death row.

  • completely right

  • He makes this song his own. He was certainly born to sing

  • I just LOVE Don William voice.

  • nice version
