well they sorta do explain in the DS version. The reason you need to fight Doga and Une is because in order to make the Eureka Key, the Key needs energy from both of them. Although this explanation is still lolwat but it never explains the change of forms these guys do. I just say its a final fantasy game because really; what kind of boss designs do players expect by now lol.

I believe it's because it's their true form, they've mentioned before that they are immortal, and can probably change their shape on will, so they chose to fight you in their true forms to make sure their powers were completely depleted, so the power of their spirit (now freed from their bodies) can break the seal on Crystal Tower.

I don't get why (at least in ealier FF's) human guys have a tendency to turn into monsters in battle; some appear as humans in field due to sprite limitations, but most are naturally human; and in Doga's and Unei's case, why would they need to transform? They're very powerful mages.

Once again, the DS version was harder. I got stuck fighting Dorga and Unne in my first run through. I got to them at level 38 and I eventually got my level all the way to level 50 and I just barely defeated them...I'm sorry, but the more I watch you play this version of the game, the more I don't want to go back to this version, DS version is much harder and I perfer it better because the story is a little better plus, again, it's harder.

dorga and unne do give hints that they are not human so that should really explain the monsters that you have to fight here. zande was the one who is given the gift of life as a human. (easily the best cuz it means he doesnt have warriors trying to kill him lol)

Yeah, the older version is less balanced, so harder in some areas and much easier in others like now. I dont think HC has; i know if i had the extra scrilla I'd buy all the DS remakes.

My best guess is that the Eureka Key was sealed using Doga and Unei's life forces - a similar seal exists in Tales of Symphonia. Though after defeating them and taking the Keys, why was there no mention of using Pheonix Downs/Raise/Arise on them? Just like Josef, Minwu, Tellah, Aria, and all the others since.

as iamdeadyay already said, no, the DS version gives absolutely no explanation of their weird transformations. But then again, a lot of bosses(at least in the DS version) look completely different in battle for no apparent reason. Btw, why are you going to Leviathan and Bahamut if you're not going to have a summoner?
