One of the best love songs ever, and one of the best male vocal performances ever. Top 10. Thanks for the great blend of music and words, Chris. It brings tears to the eyes when I hear the beauty of the melody.
I had just graduated high school and was starting college when this came out. I had no idea what i wanted to do with my life then. Some days now, i still feel the same way.......but this song is timeless. Hats off to Chris Rea. Love you, man.
I'm 45...a musician...and lived through the punk rock era.Punk rock had it's own movement, mindset & sound....Chris Rea had nothing to do with the influence of Punk.
I'm guessing lush89 was being facetious, in that punk started as a rebellion against this music. If he/she actually believes that, then I'm guessing he/she was actually born in 1989 and forgot about the Clash, Sex Pistols and the Ramones, all of which came into prominence prior to Chris Rea.

I was 51 when I first heard this song and album, just got married (lasted 9 months but this was a gift from my then husband ) and I fell in love with life and freedom. That is what this music does to me. Each time I put on this album I get up and dance my heart away. I am 64 now and still listen to it and get up an dance. Chris is a very special person who has an incredible voice. His lyrics are incredible. Thank you Michael for this wonderful gift. You set me free on so many levels.

Okay, first of all, thanx for posting this vid. Second: Barry Manilow? Uhn-uh. It costs a lot and copies are rare, but get a hold of Whatever Happened to Benny Santini on CD. Had it on vinyl for years. Mr. Rea does some smokin' blues rockers, country pop, and sophisticated jazz fusion. He is no lightweight, but no killer either. If you like a good, diversified artist 70s style, there is a lot more to Rea than this wonderful song. Personal fave from the WHTBS? "One of Those Days."
I kind of saw a cross between Barry Manilow and a young Martin Short or maybe James Spader...I definitely see Fallon though. LOL, it's looks like a Late Night show parody.
@kahlua57 I just checked & Amazon.com carries the CD this song was on (the best of Chris Rea) not much in the way of music that can't be found there I've discovered.
I remember hearing this song on the radio in the summer of 78, when I found out my 13 year old neighbor, a year older than me at the time, had died in an accident. She was very beautiful, the accident was so tragic, and almost killed her parents. I had a big crush on her, and every time I hear this song I think of her.
CR music has this grit in his voice that just makes his music attractive, besides he writes all his own music, there is a soul and spirit in each piece of his music, Im am a long time fan....
Chris Rea's voice brings out not only lovely sounds when he sings,he is also a very expressive artist with the lyrics of the song..Chris's talent is an inborn gift not something that can be taught or learned..Oh yea not to forget the 64 year old jumper..You are a lovely sight to see jumping to the music that has obviously got you in in the clouds..Keep it up.. 64 is not old it's the new 54,haven't you heard?!!
this sure does take me back....i was 21 in '78, bitter sweet times. There's something about Chris' voice and this song that transports me back and I just go "ahhhhhhh". Music got me through alot, through life. And yes, the 70s were so special and unique.
I was 19 years old and a sophomore at Louisiana State University when this was a hit. A slight chill in the October air, homework, parties, football, and dear friends-where are they now? I'm 50 now and this song brings back those sweet, painful memories.
Chris has been a highly underrated artist. His songs in the eighties and early nineties were great. I was highly influenced by him and Mark Knopfler. If you want, click MrAlvarda down below and check my songs.
So, when they saw a football shirt like the one on the guitarist #26 in the UK, did they refer to it as an "American Football" shirt? Or did other sports also have shirts that looked like that back then?
Why'd Chris record it in 2 different keys? The album version was recorded in D. He hit #12 in Billboard, 9-16-78. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Chris was a bit of a 'fool' for not tourin' the US.
Every so often I have to listen, and watch, Chris sing this song. What a wonderful song. It's got a nice "hook" to it. Really, really, like this song.
I've only recently discovered Chris Rea's music and I just loooove him! Will he ever come to Canada? What a talent! He looks like such a sweet and nice person.
Besides Road to Hell, Chris never had much of a presence in the States, which bums me out. I didn't really pick up on him until 10 years ago, so glad I did. On The Beach is such a great tune!
i just like it...chris rea and his voice,...

I've only recently discovered Chris Rea's music and I just loooove him! Will he ever come to Canada? What a talent! He looks like such a sweet and nice person.

He was part of Climax blues band when he made this song and I think it was a cool song and still think that way today

Besides Road to Hell, Chris never had much of a presence in the States, which bums me out. I didn't really pick up on him until 10 years ago, so glad I did. On The Beach is such a great tune!

One of my faves from the late 1970's.
Nice mellow song, not too mushy -- just right.
