I've been watching Fry and Laurie since I was 7. They made me fall in love with British comedy. I'm 19 now and I'm amazed at how, after all these years, these two have managed to hold on to their integrity, their intelligence, and of course, their wit.
If you need a role model in life, it probably can't get any better than Fry and Laurie <3
@pppdwandcpfanno1 Fry could debate that with you most eloquantly. On one hand it is possible, romantic and better targetted than some meaningless teen infatuation with a boy band member. Yet on the other hand, some may say you do not know love at 14 years of age. I would surmise that your sentence means that you are a young person of intelligence and know yourself. Either that or you're really a 52 year old gay man!. In any event, well played.
Funny how here Stephen defends Hugh's intelligence because that's when he was typecast as the dumb one. But later on, when Hugh becomes famous for his portrayal as House, I've heard Stephen joke that Hugh isn't as intelligent as his character. Of course, that was a joke, but this seems very genuine.
In my opinion, however, Hugh and Stephen are both geniuses.
It's interesting, but it's not as surprising as I thought it would be. Hugh Laurie is a funny, funny guy. Very impressive in his dramatic persona, which makes it all the funnier when you see his early stuff before he made it big.
This man is so sweet. Always complimenting his friend in an honest, non-cheesy way, recognizing that he appeared to be the dominant and smart one in their creative partnership in A Bit of Fry and Laurie and Jeeves and Wooster, and making an effort to correct that impression. That's a truly respectful and respectable thing to do.
Thank you, mrbarthoss, I'm very flattered by your comment.
(I'm not a fan of my username either, it was the result of a futile search for a name that nobody had ever thought of. I even tried random words from a dictionary, but as it turned out, other people had done that before me, too... :) Losing my patience, I just typed a word using a cellphone layout.)
Hugh sounds like a quite writer and editor, a bit like Dudley Moore was in Pete and Dud. There's one that works hard and does all the behind the scenes stuff and the other one comes across as an inspired genius who ad libs all the public stuff - and the ad libber is the loony one
hello my name is Adrian, i am an englishman living in france (i speak both languages) and really need a WELL PAID job, if you have one, contact me on 0033 (0)6 79157198 thankyou x
I don't know if Fry would tho'? As @idealist616 says, he is too modest, and possibly too 'English' to step on a friends coat tails, not so much to gain Laurie's fame that side of the pond, but to take an iota of Laurie's greater love of, and dominance of acting! I heard him say on another site that 'that is Hugh's baby'. (By 'English' I mean arrogance by proxy... & there is no denying that we are stubborn in our fear of using others to gain credence, albeit phantom.)
Both Hugh & Stephen are very much in tune in other ways too. They are both typically English in its greatest old world sense, in that, although they are both highly intelligent & multi talented, - they would both be appalled to be thought in any way immodest. You can't even pin one down into admitting that he's modestly competent. They would think that outrageously arrogant to even admit to thinking it. The arrogance & self entitlement of the younger generation is the antithesis of Englishness.
Don't you hate it when you mean to click a thumbs up, and you miss. I think being comfortable enough to show affection is a great trait in anyone. It's helpful all around when people are able to thoughtfully express their vulnerabilities and appreciations. Our culture is too jaded. I miss being able to speak kindly and not have to worry that it will cause suspicion or ridicule. I don't know when being a b@!#$ or thug became the new cool but I wish it would pass already.
you can clearly see that he does love his friend. i wish more people felt that way about eachother. obviously i know that we all only have one truly best friend but it would be nice to see us change our minds about how we feel about what to us seems to be a passerby.
I can only understand words, but then i miss some, and i don't get the whole meaning. I'm terrible to understand british accent, and also, my english is not so good either...
So, if someone could write what he says, i would really appreciate it :)
Fry: "It's strange with me and Hugh, there are times without number when we've turned up for some voice-over or some meeting and we're wearing the same clothes or the same colours and it freaks out Hugh completely. He has to leave and go home and change. He will not be seen in public wearing anything similar to me, because he thinks it's just too weird to be acceptable. I found it quite funny I have to say, and I certainly don't think about it, it just happens.
And as with clothes, so with views of comedy and life generally speaking, we are very in tune about things. The only thing I would say is that people get the relationship slightly wrong, I think. Because I am the mouthy one in life they assume I am the mouthy one in work, and it's not that he's mouthy but I'd say he was more influential.
I'd say Hugh is the wiser one, he's the court of last appeal to whom we would all turn. He's the one with the real charisma and real wisdom I'd say. And I'm just much more a chatty figure. So the idea that Hugh is somehow dumber or silenter, in both senses of dumb, is complete non-sense and I always wanted to make that point.
Laurie & Fry are both comedic geniuses! , I absolutely love Jeeves & Woosetr, brilliant on every level. I am an American, and I can't get of enough of British Comedy!
Wow. Stephen Fry is just the perfect gentleman. So humble and genuinly nice. I have the highest regard for him, not only as an actor and entertainer, but as a person.
Hugh Laurie always played the dumber one in their work together (Blackadder, A bit of Fry and Laurie, Jeeves and Wooster) whereas Stephen Fry is predominantly known as a very erudite, verbally apt writer and broadcaster so that is why people might think Hugh's the dumber one in their relationship. Fans will know how things are but this clip is a rare public declaration of love and indebtness. To be called 'the last court of appeal' by Stephen Fry is better than any I love you!
I love listening to this pair talk about each other. It's so apparent that they really love each other and it is so wonderful that friendships like theirs exist.
Neither me have thought about Hugh as a dumb nor unintelligent man. I always thought they complement each other. I'm not born, raised or living in Britain, so I don't know if you get another view of the relationship there, where they're more well-known. I think Stephen has an extraordinary memory, though, so he perhaps has that kind of intelligence, while Hugh has another sort of intelligence.
Aaahhh... How he says: "I always wanted to make that point" is very sweet.
I don't get why people think that Hugh's dumb or anything like that, he went to Cambridge and if when you read his book "The Gun Seller" you get blown away by his intelligence, imagination and wit. I never thought of him as thick, it didn't even cross my mind. In interviews it's just that most of the time Stephen does the talking and I think that Hugh likes that. He's just a slightly bit more quiet then Stephen.
Yeah, I don't get why people think Hugh is dumb, either. In interviews, he always comes across as intelligent, witty, and down-to-earth. Yes, he is the quiet one in interviews with Stephen, but being quiet certainly doesn't make a person dumb. I think perhaps he's just a bit on the shy side.
