@kikeking01 a lot of people say that about any brass instrument, but its all about embouchure. what you do with your cheeks doesnt matter. a lot of really popular brass performers puff their cheeks as well.
@skate4fun21 um yeah there is when you puff your cheeks you get out of tune very badly depending on the note your playing, sometimes switching notes out of tune
@terran698 No, that's false. Analyzing what you're doing while playing causes a load of problems that nobody wants. As Jacobs used to say: "Go for the product, get the results. Don't worry about whether it's right or wrong, just make sure it sounds better than anybody else." If you puff your cheeks, fine. If you don't puff your cheeks, that's also fine. There's no right or wrong way as long as you out forth a musical message towards your audience.
@skate4fun21 thats like saying its ok to look down the barrel of a loaded gun as long at you dont shoot yourself, first it sets a bad example and second while it works for a few people the majority it messes up
@terran698 There's no "bad example" being set. The person your playing for is going to be listening to you, not looking at your cheeks and examining your playing mechanics to make sure they're all "right", because there is no "right". And I don't know where you get the idea that it only works for a few people. Any professional player in a major orchestra today would say that opening your musical mind is what you need to do to get a good sound. And they would definitely be right about that.
@skate4fun21 i get this information by playing tuba/sousaphone (1st chair) for 6 years durring highschool and was considering joining the indiana stars (a pro marching band)
@terran698 If you've ever seen videos of Gene Pokorny playing you'll notice that he puffs his cheeks on certain notes. Of course that must mean he's automatically bad according to your logic.
I have the same kind of sousaphone, and that is the way it fits. It looks weird, but it doesn't fit above your head. When you position it forward, it's so low that it's in front of your face.

hey.. well ur supposed to puff ur cheeks douche bag.. if ur playing a trumpet or etc u should not puff ur cheeks but if u play a tuba or sousa u need to puff them to reach the correct tone for the pedal notes.. trsut me.. the guy in the vid is doing ok..
Well that's not really true , in this case i can also play without puffing the cheeks but when you play some of the lowest notes on the instrument very much musicians puff their cheecks, check the new orleans jazz players they all puff
Indeed but this guy does it on every tone .. :)And if you start learning to puff your cheeks it can sound good if you master the technique. Although its WAAY easier to get a nice quality tone without puffing your cheeks, and the tone need half as much practice without puffing the cheeks as it does when not puffing :>
the lowest notes are easier with puffing, in my opinion the rest is indeed easier without puffing, and i did it on every tone at that time but it's more than a year old, i've improven my skills (this sounds really bad now for me haha) cheers
sure you are the best sousaphonist in the world only your internet is to slow to put something on youtube, and your comment is only you've got no rythm if you did even care you would say more than that
Standar of exellence, all the middle schoolers use that, you can get it at your local music store, get tuba\sousephone, or baritone\euphonium, and Bass cleff or trebel cleff, they will teach you everything you need to know, but dont get cocky on the first few songs, they teach your breath control. have fun and practice alot! there are 3 books to the series.

MagnumCloud 4 years ago
You messed up a bit on the beggining, should be higher. Also, you shoulf stop puffing out your cheeks and let your tounge do the work for you.
Also, the white tubas suck. you should try using nice brass king. You can play 100 time louder on them.
But overall, very good for playing by ear. Though I would have taken it a bit faster.
