hehe ... i remember broke my leg in the 80's. My friend Ed loaned me his laptop and i played "Silence Service II" for hours, days, week and months. As a old submarine veteran i can say, one of the best u-boot sims ever. Keeping in mind ofc the early days they released this game.
I too played this for hours with my dad.. its was just awesome :) always had a Gato class sub and the best mission we ever had was in command of the USS COD.. on out way back to port totally out of torpedo's, nearly outta fuel.. we came across a large target .. a super battleship + escorts.. we surfaced and hit it with the deck gun a few times and dived.. we did some damage and she was very slow.. we did this about 3-4 times and finally sunk it took us about an hour to do it..
I beat you all - I still have the Commodore 64 version of Silent Service by Microprose and written by Sid Meier! Much more realistic sub screens than this!
Used to play this on my Tandy 1000 - 286 box. It was a much nicer computer after I installed a sound blaster, video card and monitor. After that, I could run a ton of programs that needed vga. I believe SS2 uses MCGA. This was one of the first games I ran after the upgrade and I was pretty happy. I had lots of old dos computers and had well over $3000.00 invested in one 486 box. Ahhh the good old days of DOS. : ) Oh .. SS2 via Dosbox - Run Silent.bat. and not silent.exe. Silent.exe errors.
I remember spending hours and days with this video game. It was great!. Very fun, very addictive. But it's a simulation, and strategy game, more than an action game. More close to civilization, and sid meier's but with some action
I have this game on my Amiga 500 Plus, I played it today for the first time. It's very detailed and can be entertaining for up to an hour or so. The sound on the Amiga is extremely superior to the crappy sound in this video, I wouldn't even play it if the sound was so rotten as this.
I played Silent Service on the Atari ST, it was fun and simple to play. I picked up this MS-Dos version and tried it in Dosbox ... wtf ... Silent Service 2 fucking sucks.
In fact, i recently just got Silent Hunter 1. And Silent Hunter is much more easier to control and much more fun. It also looks exactly like the old Silent Service on the Atari ST. Now that's fucked up !
Silent Service in DosBox work perfect friend! Look at my solution. Dont forget about frame drop value change. On my PC is 12.300. Everything is in FAQ file - after DosBox install...
I played this game in my first computer "186" in 1991-92. My computer had a monochrome screen, and this was one of my favourite games in my life. I remember you need to memorize all the keyboard keys as the game was complicated. I remember the hunting of the Yamato, launching front and stern torpedoes and then fleeing. Several ship and submarines class, but I like barracuda (cos its twin cannons) and Gato class (earlier tech). What a game, what a memory!!!!
I used to have this game back on my old 386 and loved it when I was a teenager in the mid '90s (I know, I'm showing my age here.) BTW, doing a career was not only fun, to see how long you'd last against the might of the Imperial Navy but the current events updates as the war progressed was an excellent primer on the chronology of the War in the Pacific. I was a history dork as a teenager so perhaps I'm showing my bias but I really liked this game and it was good in its day.
Urgh..Dont get me wrong this was a brilliant game but I remember the sounds being MUCH better on the Amiga version..

Not entertaining? This game was awesome.
At least it became awesome once I realized that sinking a whole fleet or convoy was unnecessary for success and that you could just hit and run.
