Do you find that without the distraction of colours that you're better at appreciating the form, function and layout of things? You could be an amazing B&W photographer and not even know it!
I've just got to boring common red/green colourblindness although my blue/violets are a bit hit and miss as well. I get the test questions from people when i tell them as well. Strangely when I tell a bloke I'm gay as well they tend not to ask me to prove it ;-)
Have you heard of the book Island of the Colourblind? Have you considered a trip to pingelap? And I have even heard that Achromatopsia is linked to lower visual acuity, something like 20/100. Are you aware that even some of those who do see colour may still be partially colourblind, most commonly it's with distinguishing reds and greens.
I'm doing some research for a project and at Wikipedia found "Cerebral achromatopsia" described as B&W (and grays). Is your case from a different cause and clinically different? In a particular case, one person was really troubled by it, whereas you have such an inspiringly beautiful and humorous take on it. Proving that there is more to seeing (and living) than meets the eye. Thank you so much.
I just read that "cerebral achromatopsia" involves no damage to the cones of the retina. So it's something different in origin. I still wonder if the visual perception is quite similar.
THANK YOU for clearing that up for all the idiots im not full colour blind but im told its getting worse and im short distance sighted but i hate it when people say oh your colour blind what colour is this makes me facepalm so hard
What an intelligent video! I'm colourblind and can't believe the number of seemingly smart, sensitive people who start asking me what colour things are and then laugh when I get one wrong. "He actually thinks this is yellow!" and then they look at me like I'm the freak of the universe.
can anyone tell me if there's different KINDS of colorblindness? I had one friend who just didnt see a few shades right (like red blue and purple) but could see others, i think, i didnt know him that well. but keith says he sees in black and white, so i'm guessing there is?
@tnglo There are loads of different kinds of colorblindness and I as far as i know, it's pretty rare not to be able to see any colors at all, More commonly, It's colors like green or red that people can't see.
Omg how can u...omggg I cant imagine seeing no color everyday! Just like colorblind people cant imagine seeing colors everyday...but I can see black and white so its easier for me to picture it. How do you do it? colors are soooo beeeaaaauuuttiiifffullllllllllll. I bet if you suddenly started seeing in color you'd be overwhelmed. Its just strange to know that you dont see the world as it is and how most see it...its like your missing so much..im not colorblind but I cant totally imagine.
Nice style man ! Monochromatism must suck. And I do agree with the whole stupid question thing. I hate when people do that. But my favorite one would have to be this: "Oh, your color blind ?!? So, what color is the sky ?". Its funny to freak people out when they ask those kinds of questions. I usualy say something like green if I get asked that one.
he is misleading a lot of people.. hardly anyone who is "color blind" sees in only black and white..
im color blind and i can name off all colors, it is just hard for me to tell certain shades.. like, really light red looks kinda pink to me, and purple just looks like a really dark blue to me.
I actually have never heard of anyone who was color blind that only saw in black and white.. but ill have to research and see if that happens with some people.
Thank you for taking the time to make that video to explain your form of colour blindness - I've always been fascinated by that condition, but I've NEVER asked a colour blind person what colour my shirt is! lol
so you look at a rainbow and literally don't see anything? or you just don't see the shades of colors? I would have figured you still see light, just not colors. What about a photo of a rainbow? Can you see the bands of the arc?
Haha keith i'm colorblind, deuteranopia i think is the specific name, and those are the SAME questions i always get asked! My friends still think im lying about it when i get a question right... w/e tho lol
he actually has a very rare form of it... most colorblind people are red/green deficient (me included) and we see rainbows and such, but get mixed up when it comes to colors that are alike... and yes, we dream only with the colors that we can see... and i agree with him, please stop asking me what color your shirt is!
Hi Keith, I'm an 8th grade Math teacher and i will be teaching my students about independent and dependent events (probability). I am going to have them answer questions regarding colorblindness using a data set.
Can I please show them your video blog to introduce them to their colorblindness lesson? I think it's great!
Yeah I am completely colorblind. and its a lot harder being a colorblind girl than a guy. haha I got it from both sides of my family so it hit me pretty hard.
awh, im a girl and im colorblind too! haha and i understood everything you just said. they have these great colorblind people t-shirts that say things like "hey youre colorblind?! what color is my shirt?" and i wear them all the time. im just glad you cleared things up for people. it does get annoying
Hi there I am an optometrist in New Zealand and colour deficiency is quite fascinating. If you would like to see what a colour deficient person sees go to vischeck website. Very enlightening. Be aware that Seiko/epson in Japan have developed tinted lenses (they look like sunglasses) that go a long way to correcting the anomaly.
I'm colour blind too, but if you think about it, it's great being different, it's like you have a superpower, we see the world in a different way to others, whish is cool I think.
they sure did make me wish i was not color blind, when i trained almost half of my life to become a sniper in the marine corps just to find out that im color blind.. witch i had no idea i was until i had to take a test, and you cant be anything special in the military if you're color blind.
yes I am completely colour blind, it's called monochromatism.
It's very rare but possible. So technically I see in black and white (which is what I tell people) but growing up from birth like that i learned different sdahed as colours so I don't consider myself to see in black and white because I don't know the diference.
All I know is that if you were to see through my eyes, you would see black and white. Also, i wanted to be a cop but couldn't because of colourblindness :(
yea, i looked around and saw some stuff about people who are color blind that only see in black and white. I never know people had it that bad. when ever i would tell people im color blind they would say "what color is this? what color is that?" and i would always know what color it is.. lol. my world is very colorful, its just that purple looks just like a dark blue to me and green and brown look just like darker and lighter versions of the same color.
@KRC588 hey i feel your pain, i am 13 and i'm a colorblind female, witch is rare. and think of the stuff i won't be able to do when i'm older. and i know it sucks. but just be happy that your not blind.
..ive talked to people before with colour blindeness, and they say they dont see black & white, that they see several colours and cant distinguish O_o
If someone is colorblind, how do they even know that they are colorblind? After all, that would have to imply that they know what color IS. But since they don't know what color is (have no idea what "blue" or "red" is), how can anyone say that they are colorblind? Dumb as it might sound, people who see color really lack the ability to see in monochrome.
Keith! What a french!! Haha made me laugh (Yes! I AM French) u're really good fun to watch and interesting and funny... and not awkward like many video blogs i see.. and sorry but I can't resist saying u have lovely blue eyes ^^
Neat. Complete colourblindness is the least common form of colourblindness. You're one in about ten zillion *wink*
May I ask a less-dumb question? You didn't mention night vision. Do you find it hard to go outside when it's very sunny out? Or do you find it hard to come back inside (into darkness) when it's bright out?
Hey Keith, I've finally done it. Gone through each of your videos. Thanks to you - my stomach muscles are permanently sore lol. It started with the Brilliant Marketing video then I worked my way down the list to this one. I'm glad I subscribed, keep them coming!
my friend is half color blid due to haveing a laser pointer get to his EYEBALL! :O so if he closes one eye he sees black and white and if he closes the other he sees colors, i find that odd, but awesome, ahahaha me ranting...ill shut up now...
as far as stoplights and such. . . what about blinking red lights and amber-yellow lights? they should take that into consideration for colourblind people.
That is the coolest first video I've ever seen :) I continued watching other videos from you gallery, and I must say it was A LOT of fun :D You make every single video fun... how you managed to do that from the very first start remains a mystery to me :P Maybe it's those awsome pills.
Anyways, continue making these videos, so we can all continue enjoying them :D
i know you hate the probing... but i just have to say this one thing. If you're colorblind... how did you choose the pictures for your video? did you get someone to help you? if you didnt, i'd be pretty impressed. but then again im sure you could just search Color Photo of Sky on google.. idk im gonna shut up now bc im making mysefl look like an ass. :P
Haha I love that! "and I don't mean that in a gay way"X). It's cool that you actually wrote about his beautiful to him, it shows that you are secure in your own sexuallity, whatever that may be. And i agree with you, it's sad that he can't see his eyecolor... But i don't think he cares:D. Take care and keep on giving people compliments! //Emmelie
a friend of mine is color blind and he couldn't care less.......... like Keith he does get tired of dumb questions ....... but if you thought Keith went off on it you should hear my friend go off .... I guess the fact that I myself never know when to shut up must have to some point rubbed off on him ... great guy though I love him to pieces ..... sorry for all the dumb questions Keith .......... Hugs ......
1. it was 8 you missed out, not 9... i even went back and checked... [sad, i know...]
2. when you play eye-spy, try saying "i spy something beginning with 't'" or something. thats how i play it. its more fun... when i was little, though, i said "something beginning with 't'" and it was always "horse". yeah... i was a stupid kid. =]
That's crazy in some ways but not by much since most people dream in black and white with the most vivid dreams being in color. (Which to my recollection has only happened to me 3 times in my 3 odd decades of life. So your not missing much. ;)
There's different levels of colorblindness, so if you for example can't tell the difference between the start button and task bar in WindowsXP (wow I suck at examples), that's full on colorblind.
I'm semi-color blind. I can't tell different shades of a color, and I mix up blue and purple a hell of a lot, also some other colors.
Because many colorblind people cannot distinguish between the colors Red & Green.
When you are behind the wheel of plane, just like when you drive a car, you have traffic signals. Green means go, Red means stop.
A person like the teenager on Little Miss Sunshine would also not be able to drive a car. This is due to him/her not being able to know when to go and when to stop.
Traffic lights in Québec are designed in a way to help colourblind people. I would find it confusing because of how the setup is different when comparing the ones from like Ontario. But since they are horizontal, they use shapes instead of the stacking vertical order. Red is square, yellow is diamond, and green is circle.
Very cool, I have some friends that are color blind, and my brother is color defficient (i probably murdered the spelling right there). I was a kid when I found out he was color defficient so I was all like "omg what color is this!?"
I'm guessing he dreams in black and white, since he said that he is colorblind by birth, his brain remembers shades for different colors that he has seen in real life. But that's just my theory
"My name's Keith by the way" LOL. Its great this vid. I'm sure you are lifting stigma of this condition, with every viewing. KUDOS. I have a condition called hemiplegic migraine disease, in which attacks mimic stroke paralysis and I cannot feel anything. So a 'friend' of mine decided to cut my foot during an attack to see if I was faking...WTF.
That's the first time I hear of someone being completely colourblind! I have a light form, can't distinguish very dark shades of colours (like dark blue, purple, dark brown and black,...) and very light ones (like light green, yellow, vanilla,...), also born with it (duh). And indeed, it doesn't bother, only I can never be a pilot or a technician (no complaining there:p) and I had to take an adjusted drivers examination. And what the 'What colour is my shirt?'-thing concerns: been there...
Forgotten: does someone in your family has it too, mine is hereditary in the male line, my grandfather had it, my mother doesn't and I do. She passed me his "diseased" X-chromosone, like my biology teacher in high school liked to call it...
even u are colourblind I hope that u know that u `ve lovely blue eyes and I fell sorry for u because u can`t see a rainbow those are amazing but u shouldn`t fell bad I like to described them for u some day!
thats cool, and no i dont wish i were colorblind, and sorry to saw, im not really sorry for you......i know that sounds bad, but its the way things are for you, and you've accepted it. like allergies....i have allergies, and ive lived with them my whole life, and i accept it now... same principle.....its cool to be unique lol
I liked this video a lot. My grandfather is colourblind with the exception that he can see yellow. There is a Bell commercial that is completely black and white except for a few yellow objects here and there. The first time I saw it, I bawled my eyes out because that is how he sees the whole world and I felt so sorry for him. It made me happy to hear you say that you are not bothered by it because you have always been colourblind. It is most likely the same for my grandfather.
I'm somewhat colorblind- but I can discern most colors (and can definitely see in color). It especially gets to me when I'm trying to distinguish blue and purple, or green and brown. Sometimes Red and Orange are problematic. Once I did a whole color project for architecture with a purple colored pencil thinking it was blue. Then I pointed to my friend's work and complemented her gray house (which turned out to be pink).
wow, ive never actually thought about the idea of being completely colour blind before, .....it would definately suck not being able to see a really nice blue sky, but then seeing the world in shades of grey would lend you a unique perspective on things....it would be like living in a film noir....
There was once a girl in my class who asked my friend to pass her the purple pencil and he just laughed at her. Are you like that? Cuz if you where, it would be super funny :D:D
"Who needs rainbows?" LOL! You are a great guy and I am sure that being colourblind isn't all that bad now that I have heard it from your point of view.
i get the same dumb questions too but no one is sooo colorblind they just see black and white lol. anyways your cool an funny and ive just subscribed XD peace!
c'mon dude its like a 99.9999% that any one has COMPLETE colorblindness....i know ive got it severely and looked up on it. it wuld be impossible for you to just see plain black an white lol ur probs like me and can see colors just mixed up all over the place like if i point out a car to my m8 i say "look at that blue car" and it turns out to be purple, green or black lol.
Actually it's called monocromacy, and yes I have it; absent of colour. There's two types of it and I have rod monochromacy which means I have only rod receptors in my retina, meaning no colour and poor vision, especially in the dark.
i personally would find it pretty cool seeing the world in a different way from most people.

Take care! Aurevoir (or however that is spelled)

I know some colourblindness can be cured by an operation, can yours?
If you chose not to why?
Sorry if these questions are a bit personal, I was just wondering... :D
Peeny1046 4 years ago
just a couple of things....
1. it was 8 you missed out, not 9... i even went back and checked... [sad, i know...]
2. when you play eye-spy, try saying "i spy something beginning with 't'" or something. thats how i play it. its more fun... when i was little, though, i said "something beginning with 't'" and it was always "horse". yeah... i was a stupid kid. =]
loving the blogs by the way!!

Keith,
When you dream, is it in B&W too? Ever see color in your dreams?
gutharius 4 years ago
I dream in black and white, as far as I am conscious of :)
KRC588 4 years ago
That's crazy in some ways but not by much since most people dream in black and white with the most vivid dreams being in color. (Which to my recollection has only happened to me 3 times in my 3 odd decades of life. So your not missing much. ;)
gutharius 4 years ago
woah, great question
Peeny1046 4 years ago
Oh, and I also got that treatment (what color is this?) growing up, it was actually fun for me, and I enjoyed doing it.
Also in highschool it got me laid a few times =P, awesome icebreaker.
StealthGhost 4 years ago 6
There's different levels of colorblindness, so if you for example can't tell the difference between the start button and task bar in WindowsXP (wow I suck at examples), that's full on colorblind.
I'm semi-color blind. I can't tell different shades of a color, and I mix up blue and purple a hell of a lot, also some other colors.
StealthGhost 4 years ago
They would be different shades, though, right?

yeah, but you can still memorize de oredr of colors anywhere else.
i watched Little Miss Sunshine, dunno if you've seen it, but....why can't colorblind ppl be pilots?
allisOn041290 4 years ago
Because many colorblind people cannot distinguish between the colors Red & Green.
When you are behind the wheel of plane, just like when you drive a car, you have traffic signals. Green means go, Red means stop.
A person like the teenager on Little Miss Sunshine would also not be able to drive a car. This is due to him/her not being able to know when to go and when to stop.
Timmah6991 4 years ago
AAH.
wao, that's so obvious...
thanx!!
allisOn041290 4 years ago
Traffic lights in Québec are designed in a way to help colourblind people. I would find it confusing because of how the setup is different when comparing the ones from like Ontario. But since they are horizontal, they use shapes instead of the stacking vertical order. Red is square, yellow is diamond, and green is circle.

Now I feel bad. But INFORMED!

And what the 'What colour is my shirt?'-thing concerns: been there...
belgium1987 4 years ago
Forgotten: does someone in your family has it too, mine is hereditary in the male line, my grandfather had it, my mother doesn't and I do. She passed me his "diseased" X-chromosone, like my biology teacher in high school liked to call it...

It is most likely the same for my grandfather.

airshowfanforever 4 years ago
I'm somewhat colorblind- but I can discern most colors (and can definitely see in color). It especially gets to me when I'm trying to distinguish blue and purple, or green and brown. Sometimes Red and Orange are problematic. Once I did a whole color project for architecture with a purple colored pencil thinking it was blue. Then I pointed to my friend's work and complemented her gray house (which turned out to be pink).
But yea, I get those stupid questions too!

wow, ive never actually thought about the idea of being completely colour blind before, .....it would definately suck not being able to see a really nice blue sky, but then seeing the world in shades of grey would lend you a unique perspective on things....it would be like living in a film noir....

raurs 4 years ago
c'mon dude its like a 99.9999% that any one has COMPLETE colorblindness....i know ive got it severely and looked up on it. it wuld be impossible for you to just see plain black an white lol ur probs like me and can see colors just mixed up all over the place like if i point out a car to my m8 i say "look at that blue car" and it turns out to be purple, green or black lol.
M3larn 4 years ago
Actually it's called monocromacy, and yes I have it; absent of colour. There's two types of it and I have rod monochromacy which means I have only rod receptors in my retina, meaning no colour and poor vision, especially in the dark.
