In 1950, Columbia Pictures had bought the screenplay "The Gunfighter" and President Harry Cohen sent it to Wayne to read. Wayne was by known working independently of Republic and while he liked the story, he hadn't forgotten how Cohen had treated him. The script was later bought by Twentieth Century Fox for Gregory Peck to play.
