or you could also left-click the text layer in the viewer and select Create Masks from Text to automatically create accurate masks for each letter.. as simple as 2 clicks =)

Just in case you didn't know, you can just select the layer with your text then go to "layer>auto-trace". Then it will draw out the mask automatically.

Why are masking the letters... Just make an outline of it in Illustrator and copy it to layer in AE....
