  • Games nowerdays don't have such an atmosphere...

  • @Didac1111 This is why "Epic Megagames" renamed themselves to "Epic Games" after Unreal1. Everything they did after it were just "games" :P

  • Greatest game-intro ever! I also loved the music of Deus Ex (2000), Shogo (with the Japanese girl singing) and the music of Turok 2.

  • Quake was far superior

  • @uckethea What, that game which had no story or explanation to why you were there kinda like a CoD of the old games, basically doom with upgraded graphics, different enemies and weapons, but I do enjoy ID games, doom to doom 3 and quake.

  • @softie2 ya, I wasn't really being 100% serious. I just remember getting into the old debates whether Quake was better or Unreal.

  • @uckethea They're both good I admit, but unreal is kinda similar but actually has a story and explanation to it's story, rather than, here go through a teleporter which chooses your difficulty and then kill things to get to the end of the level then teleport to the next level.

  • Did I hear a hint of original Deus Ex in that music?

  • @TheTurbinator

Considering that this game came out before Deus Ex and the fact that Deus Ex's music is made by the same person?

  • @TMNoob3 not to mention the fact that Deus Ex used the unreal engine...

  • Ah, back when games actually supported openGL. Good times..

  • All dem square shapes, diz iz unreal.

  • So why are we defending a box canyon in the middle of nowhere?

  • This blew me away when I first saw it. I had a Intense 3D Voodoo rush card and couldn't play it so I had to do le upgrade!. I think I got a Diamond Monster card. Either way I played it and it was and still is amazing :).

  • reminds me of turok evolution

  • Oh Epic... Can you please go back to the Unreal series after Gears of War?

  • I still remember going over to a friend's house because he wanted to show me, "The greatest game ever made." When I saw this intro I was in total agreement.

  • Epic.

  • Now people care more about the graphics than game play...

  • @4TheRace: Graphics have always been important for this kind of games. Unreal had the best graphics of its time and this has been key to its success.

  • @Hypernl Yes, these games shaped today's games, but most old games had better game play, I can list a ton...

    1. Unreal

    2. Painkiller

    3. Call of Duty Medal of Honor

These are just a few of the many.

  • @Hypernl yet i play it more than any game i have

  • @Hypernl yeah, but Unreal also had an "unreal" sound art, and a new mind blowing story (for games), Napali art concept (story, arquitecture, enviroments). Unreal is not just a mere cutting edge graphic game, it´s pure art. Today´s games, focus too hard on graphics, and forget to develop the game not olny as a product, but to actually put effort in giving the game a soul!

  • @Hypernl

Sorry for that but Unreal also had an excellent gameplay, level depth, it wasn't only a graphical game. Just look at it's successor UT99 to gain the answer of what once a time was really worth and today no more...

  • @4TheRace You can't be serious? Unreal was all about the graphics, as a shooter it wasn't that great, One element it had that seems to have been mostly lost was the epic level design. Remember the Sun Spire? Starting at the bottom, looking up and an hour or two later you're at the top looking down? Awesome.

  • @Quitchy Yeah I remember that, those were the times...

  • @4TheRace Come on man. Are you serious? This game's advertising all centered around its graphics.

  • @4TheRace

Kid, graphics was one of the main selling point of this game when it was released. Stop trying to be nostalgic when you weren't even around.

  • @4TheRace Actually the gameplay could be a little tricky in this game. Can't tell you how many times the dodge mechanic had me accidentally jumping into lava or off cliffs.

  • There is a little BSP hole in 0:13 in bottom right corner xD Still it is one of the best intros ever...

  • What I like the most about this scene is the music. Awesome atmosphere.

  • Saw this game for the first time in my life on brand new top of the line PC of my cousins back in 1998. My jaw dropped, and I could not stop watching this intro for like half an hour. That kind of rendering engine was way ahead of its time. Especially impressive is how many hardware rendering technologies they supported back in the day, and even more impressive was that they supported software too! I've never seen any game since then with such a jawdropping effect on me.

  • I can still remember when I saw the first time this intro with 3Dfx. It just blew me away. I couldn't believe it. I showed this to a friend saying "Look at this! And this is actual ingame graphcis!!!" I think I haven't bought it when it was released but some months later.

  • One of the most breathtaking moments in my gaming life was when I first saw this scene rendered with my Voodoo2 card.

  • Legendary.-

One of the greatest scenes in video games history ever......

Graphics-wise much ahead of its time, needed 2 x Voodoo-2 3d-accelerators to run high-end. Obtained this free bundled with my Voodoo3 3000 card, and changed my and my friends view of video gaming forever!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Best game ever made, graphics are awesome even if it comes from 1998, lol im born 1998, anywats AWESOME game

  • Oh man, this music is so fantastic. It's been ages since I played the original Unreal.

  • I was 16 when I played with this game :-) now I am 28 and I remember like it was yesterday... very beautiful remember ;-)

  • el mejor

  • This game was essentially the Stg44 equivalent of the game's industry.

  • I remember playing it by 98 on LAN with friends in a cybercafe, was love at first sight :)

  • Best solo fps game ever

  • Nostalgia

My first on line game I`ve played with Deck 16 as favorite.

    Men I was good :)

  • Those were magic days... and endless nights! :-P

  • a very simple intro, but the best game ever!

  • They made a mistake by removing flyby from anthology version

  • ah the castle flyby in full voodoo 2 sli glory.

  • Hail to the KING !

  • Shame the games industry is all about money and what they can shove on the selves quicker.

Huge lack of kick ass quality games like Unreal/HL1/Quake/Doom/Deus Ex :/

  • One of the best shooters ever, I bought it with my old Voodoo 3 (16mb) graphic card.

    Good memories.

  • I Never Really Understood The Castle Bit ??? Sorry Whats The Deal With The Castle ???

  • one of the bests

  • I used to have this game, loved playing it. Takes for freakin ever to finish, or at least it did for me. Does anyone know where I can get this game now?

  • @oneslowss: You can buy it new as part of the Unreal Anthology pack or find an used copy at sites like Ebay. If you get it, be sure to head over to OldUnreal for the 227 patch.

  • @Hypernl What's sad is that last year I believe, I bought it for $5 brand new from Gamestop, yet for some reason they all seem to cost $20 or more now for digital downloads. (And physical copies as well I believe.)

  • @oneslowss I would recommend getting it from steam :D

  • This was an absolute breakthrough graphics wise. No game could compare to this then. And the awesome music. Same dude made music to Deux Ex. You can clearly here the similarities in style.

  • There is D3D10 for Unreal 1 and UT!

  • I hope that when unreal 3 comes it has this kinda atmosphere

  • This game can run with only 32 megas of Ram

  • I want that game again, but just can't find it anymore.... :'(

  • Brings back memories sooooooooo much...

  • I remember playing this game back in the days when my 3dfx voodoo 2 gpu with 8mb of ram was the shit! Not to mention my pentium 2 266mhz!!

This game could probably run on a nintendo ds now!

  • incredibly beautiful for it's time.. and FAST!

  • While the geometry in Unreal is rather plain by today's standards, the textures still amaze me... I remember switching from the software rendering mode(S3 Virge) to Glide... Man, was that awesome!

  • best game ever

    2009 still playing it

  • @baelzabub me too : )

  • @baelzabub dude seriously, i dont want to insult you but...

... i really think you should go outside once in a while!

  • @YRUIM kid i do, how old is this game?

i used to paly it when i was like 13/14?

  • @baelzabub 2011 - still playing it :)

  • @mrdeathamore i wish i didnt have windows 7, i cant run it :'(

  • @baelzabub Hm, I have W7 and HD version of the game (like in this video) - and all is ok. Try to turn on compatibility with Win 98/2000/XP in .exe properties, but actually I playing without them.

  • Brings back so many memories playing with friends online through the story mode and using the admin cheats to make things even more fun!!

  • unreal is real!

  • Still looks alright to this day :)

  • Brings back so many memories.... [MoA]

  • Best First-Person-Shooter to date.

The intro looks great with HQ textures and in HD. :)

  • You seem to have named yourself according to how you act.

Unreal had more depth than most shooters of the time, and even some now, so basically that would mean they are all "tech demos", though not all glorified.

  • except that the AI and the weapons were so revolutionary that Unreal Tournament became the #1 model hit by simply adopting those two points alone.

The game was also the first in pre-scripted in-game cutscenes, that Half-life later followed.

The only thing this thing lacked was a story, but everything else about it became the foundation for basically every FPS you see today.

  • I think Unreal was the first game to incorporate an alternate firing method.

In my opinion, half-life ruined the originality of games. It's setting and equipment weren't exactly "original" in comparison to game's like unreal's weapons, as well as others to a lesser extent like duke or quake (lightning gun)

Many games attempted to copy HL's style, which is partially why you no longer see artistic games such as Unreal.

The settings in Unreal made for a much more memorable experience as well.

  • blood had an alternate firing method... before unreal

  • Didn't realize that, now that i think didn't SW Dark Forces also have an alt fire as well?

But not many games had really used the alt fire back them, and unreal was one of them.

  • But Uneal was the first game to allow you to take full advantage of the alternate fire for various tactics (shock rifle combo).

  • unreal tournament had different weapons or modified

  • S3TC!!!

  • I remember using the "fly" cheat in the intro was fun back then

  • Thanks for uploading.

  • Looks sweet, must be running the high res texture pack in OpenGL right?

  • I use the high resolution textures where available. Not all textures are in high-res yet. I do have S3TC enables and in this video I use Unreal's Direct3D9 renderer. OpenGL has the same features. I use Unreal patch 227 beta. (OldUnreal)

  • Still amazing today.

  • thank your very much for uploading!

I never played the whole game, but I could watch the tech demo/intro for hours
