Mr Howard's vague climate change measures coincided with other news today; Japan's latest earthquake caused a radioactive leak. I hope that will serve Australia as a reminder that the nuclear option is still dangerous. No short term perceived economic gain is worth the long term cost to the population's health. There's little doubt the world's weather is becoming more extreme — and if you believe the experts, it's going to be worse in Australia than anywhere else on the planet.

They say that in 60 years, we'll all be feeling the difference. Melbourne can expect an average temperature four degrees higher than now. Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth will all be five degrees warmer. Sydney's average temperature will be six degrees higher.

But the most alarming prediction of all is for Sydney. The predicted six degree temperature rise will bring on a permanent drought plus extreme winds, empty dams and constant fires, with thousands dying in heatwaves.
