787B, neither rotary engines, were never specifically "banned". The rule changes for 1992 were already decided in 1990 and had nothing to do with rotary engines. Or would you say then that Mercedes' V8 turbo, Jaguar V12, Nissan's, Toyota's and Porsche's turbos were also "banned"? Also Mazda's Le Mans win in 1991 seems to overshadow the fact that the Mazda's rotary powered cars never dominated and never won any other race in the World Sportscar Championship (Le Mans was part of it).

I own a mazda rx8 auto..........It runs well,isnt the fastest car around , but it corners like its on rails...you dont need too much handling skills,just point the steering and the car follows........best I felt.

@lebickmeck It was not banned because it never was too fast. 787(B) entered 21 races in 1990-1991 and won one. That's not domination. Secondly and more importantly, the new regulations were set in stone maybe as early as in 1989 or at least in 1990. That's one year before Mazda's sole victory in 1991. These new regulations - as you like to say it - also "banned" all turbo engines (i.e. only allowed 3.5L NA engines). These rule changes absolutely nothing to do with the 787B.

Well...Mazda produced mostly the 2 rotor 12a/13b rotary engines for Rx2/3/4/7. They also made 3 rotor 20b and the famous R26b 4 rotor, that won 91 LeMans. The Japanese perfected Wankel Rotary is completly different from any Piston engine. It has very few moving parts. Look up Rotary for info. The reason it was unbeatable and banned from LeMans, is because of it's Power to Weight advantage.
