While I don't disagree with your perspective, I consider the NHL very different than the typical job that most of us work. Wanting out is one thing, but I think the way Heatley handled it is what fans were angry at. No reason, no justification, no anticipation of it - it just came out of the blue, putting the team in a vulnerable position and forcing it to dramatically change its plans for the summer. It wasn't fair to the organization OR its fans - a rather selfish move as far as I'm concerned.
