The problem is he stopped ON the tracks - on the second set in the back, partially hidden by the sign on the left. The truck driver couldn't safely back up his transport, so he tried to go through the crossing instead.

Umm, I think the results kinda speak for themselves as far as his decisions are concerned. Had he just waited for the train to pass, he would've been fine.
Most of you have your heads up your rears. Look real close. He was turning at a lighted intersection. On the turn the gates started coming down. He stops and tries to back out first with the gate down behind cab. Now it isn't a car. You can't dump it in reverce and then jam it into a forward gear. No syncronizers like a car. Problem was light. Most go red when gates are about to drop. Unlike him i wouldn't have stopped but rather gunned it on accross
Just look at how long it took that train to stop.
