The Polish Cavalry was transformed into mounted infantry in 1936 or so; German in 1928 or about. Polish cavalry began mechanization process two years after German, 1936, 1938, respectively. Because of this process the German cavalry units in 1939 were in fact units of Heavy Mounted Infnatry, and the Polish cavalry brigades had as many anti--tank weapons as average infantry divisions. Therefore, as at Mokra, they did often face off with the German tank units using Bofors 37mm AT gunas and AT Rifl
Lances were optional and were issued to the individual soldiers who requested them.
Both Poles and Germans executted cavalary charges during the September Campaign in 1939. Cavalry was the least mobile component of the Polish armed forces (besides 7th Infnatry Division) capable of breaking out from encirclement on her own with casulties at or under 50%.
@tomdabomb1004 oh ok thanks for the info. ive never heard of Polish calvalry actually having spears i always thought it was nzi/russian propoganda. where can i read about this
In 1914 lances were still being carried by regiments in the British, Indian, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, Turkish, Belgian and Russian armies, amongst others. The trench warfare and blood bath in WW1 put an end to it. Polish cavalry discarded the lance except for ceremonial purposes and shows. They were a mobile reserve expected to ride from the rear to the battle, dismount, and fight like normal infantry equipped with all kind of up to date weapons.

Yes, you are quite right but when it comes specificly to the airfight tactics, Polish airfight tactics were the best. 303 Division had largest number of kills and fought in totally different way than British divisions.
Brits were communicating by radio and chasing enemy planes. Poles were flying high, looking for enemy and dive straight on them on a frontal collision course, shooting as lat at possible and turning in a last moment to avoid collision with enemy plane, so they were suprising enemy, didn't waste ammo and didn't have to count on planes performance.

true, but have you been there at late ? well for me is water under the bridge and I hope we have never again a war in western europe or europe overall
globetrotter1121 polish cavalry did not charge on german tanks. it was goebbels propaganda to show poles as romantic idiots who sacrifice their lives in fucking stupid way. Inreality, during september campagin 1939 polish cavalery was used to quick move anti-tank bosfor cannons cal. 37 mm. and to charge on retreating german infantry.
Germans were terrified by those charges on infantry, that is also why they created this lies. They said that in whole September Campaign they lost 15 000 soldiers but they lost such number in one Battle of Wizna against who? 720 troopers!
this fake charge (popularized by goebbels propaganda) was during battle of mokra where german lost over 120 tanks. If you think that they have destroyed those tanks by saber or lances....uhm...well.....
True is that those german tanks were destryed by anti-tank bosfor cannons cal.37 mm. used by those cavalry.
I spoke to people who actually seen it happen, this happen in the early days. Yes like any army the polish learned fast. So in later stages the 37 mm was used effective against the pz 1 and 2. Now I spoke to german military and civilian and polnish military and civilian who were there. I was part of an international history group in 1983 who visit those battlefields
BTW, video is worthless, look at a pic of an old tank, look at a pic of a horse, and look at a pic of a line of soldiers, with no context, and save 5 mins.
Old school news: (read in text books as a kid)The polish cavalry charged German panzer tanks.
New school news: Polish cavalry was utilized as mounted infantry. The 18th Cav was pursuing German infantry (after whooping them) when they got jumped by German armored unit. Up to you if they were baited into a trap or fell to serendipity. Charge against tanks was reported by Germany and Italy (who wanted to prove polish ineffectiveness).
But, unless you were there and in charge, who knows...
Some units of the division are fighting near Bzura and Kampinos untill 24th of IX, suffering losses - finally the whole division is withdrawed from the front because of heavy casualties, to Niedderheim near Rhein River (there it is reinforced and reorganized, and then send to Western Front to protect it from eventuall French offensive).
The division is unable to continue fight. Fortunately Poles in the area are no longer able to organise a strong attack. Some Polish units broke through to Kampinoskie Forests (and there heavy battles are fought - Polish forces slowly move forward towards Warsaw and Modlin, pushing back Germans but suffering heavy losses), rest were encircled west of Bzura river - and will be destroyed during the next few days by another massive-offensive combined with strong air-attacks of Bombers fleet.
35. Panzer-Regiments fights small, succesfull defensive skirmishes. Orders come at midnight 18/19 IX - 35. P-R and LAH are ordered to rescue the 4th P-D.
19 IX - near Hilarów heavy fights, Poles are pushed back. Near Śladów succes - 3,000 prisoners from encircled unit, more than 1,000 German prisoners realeased from captivity. Total of 4,000 prisoners taken and Poles push back north, encirclement taken off.
Most part of the division is rescued - division survived but suffered heavy losses.
17th September - heavy fighting of 4th Panzer Division and SS Leibstandarte near Mistrewice and Juljopol. Strenght of the 35. P-R in the evening is only 60 tanks, decreases during the next few days.
18. IX - 36. P-R and most of divisional units involved in heavy fighting along the Bzura line and almost destroyed by Poles. Part of Panzerabwehr-Abteilung forces was destroyed by Polish offensive across Bzura.
1st Panzer Division which also attacks but from other direction, is defeated and encircled - most units are crushed or in panic. The division manage to get together and break through the front to German lines, but it tooks 1 day to even few days, for some units.
4th Panzer Division attack is also rejected - heavy losses sustained. Poles attack across the Bzura river, running ovber 36. Pz-Reg. and some other units - Germans suffer huge losses, Poles - enormous losses. But Poles break through.
The division comes to the battle of Bzura and Puszcza Kampinoska (9-24 IX) on 15th of September.
On 16th of September - most part of the division and LAH start massive counterattack, together with other German divisions, against Polish forces of Army "Poznań" and "Pomorze".
Division fights in Mlodzieszki-Ruszyn-Bibijampol-Adampol area. Near Adampol the whole 6th Tanks Company is destroyed by Polish AT fire from the nearby forest. Leutnant Diebish dies, Leutnant Cossel is heavily wounded...
During the attack Kaputy are captured, prisoners taken, Polish artillery pieces and AT-guns run over. Lots of amunition captured. Fights continue for several hours - in early night, in the darkness, Błonie are taken.
14 IX - in the meantime 31st Infanterie-Division comes to retook previous regimental positions, and the 35. P-R is orderred to attack together with LAH and 12th Infanterie-Regiment towards Bzura. Other units of the division are to protect the Bzura line and defend it from Poles.
...Poles at Mszczonów - but it can't move from the defensive lines near Warsaw because it's involved in heavy defensive fights and hardly manage not to break and be defeated.
12-13 IX some units of Army "Łódź" which are withdrawing to Warsaw and Modlin, attack the positions of the division, but finally go to Modlin.
13 IX - 35. Panzer-Regiment withdraws from nearbyhood of Warsaw to regroup in Strzykuły - then it attacks together with SS Leibstandarte "Adolf Hitler" towards Błonie, at 14:30
11 IX - 31. Kaniowski Riflemen Infantry Regiment attacks German backs in and around Mszczonów - 14 tanks, 32 armoured transporters, many other vehicles - burned or destroyed (mostly using grenades, Molotov-Coctiles, explosives and gasoline).
12 IX - heavy battles in the outskirts of Warsaw and in the area near Warsaw, Palmiry and Mszczonów. Polish counterattacks from Warsaw of all weapons. Hauptmann Schnell's unit destroys 7 Polish tanks. 82nd Infanterie Regiment receives order to attack...
Night of 9/10 and 10 IX - heavy fighting for the suburbs of Warsaw, many kms behind the frontline, several succesfull Polish counterattacks couse heavy losses to both sides. Several tanks destroyed (1 by artillery fire, few by Polish 7 TP tank attacks from Warsaw). The division is endagerred of being encircled by Polish forces (the ones coming forward Mszczonów and those from the west - Army "Lódź").
In the late evening of 8 IX the first unit of the division (35. P-R) arrives near Warsaw and captures Raszyn - then it attacks Warsaw - however Warsaw is not prepared for defense, the division is repulsed under heavy casulaties. It withdraws. 9 IX - the rest of the division comes, second storm on Warsaw which takes all day - terribly heavy casualties (45 tanks completely lost, more than 60 damaged, many dozens trucks with dead and wounded soldiers). In the evening the division withdraws.
The most important battles of the 4th Panzer-Division in Poland were:
Mokra (1. IX), Ostrowie-Kozinka (2-3 IX), forcing Warta River near Szczepolice, attacking west of Radomsko (3 IX), Forcing Widawka River (night 3/4 IX), Borowskie Mountains (2-6 IX; 4. P-D took part from 4. IX), "Sturmfahrt auf Warschau", avoiding the enemy, 40 km behind the frontline: Ujazd - Lubochnia - Rawa Mazowiecka (6-7 IX) - Rawa Maz. is 115 km from Warsaw; "Vorwärts nach Warschau" (8 IX).
Units of the division often used Polish civilians and POWs (most of them were wounded POWs) as "living shields" - for the first time during the battle of Mokra.
After Polish victory in Mszczonów, where Polish units attacked backs of the division causing heavy losses, the division took revenge - it murderred 11 Polish prisoners in small village between Mszczonów and Warsaw.
Soldiers of the division received: 1 Knight Cross, 41 first class Iron Crosses and 764 second class Iron Crosses for the Polish campaign.
Soldiers of the 4th Panzer Division murderred 256 Polish POWs after taking prisoner, and 106 civilians in Śladów (near Bzura river). In total they murderred more than 200 civilians and unknown number of prisoners of war (few hundreads, more than 300).
Between 1st and 19th of September 1939 the 4th Panzer-Division lost (according to German combat reports) 1,777 men (including 95 officers) KIA, MIA & WIA (all MIAs were reported dead or missed forever later).
The Panzer-Regiment 35. lost 43 KIA and 9 MIA between 1st and 19th of IX.
Between 20th and 24th of September it lost another 21 KIA and 2 MIA. Other units were also suffering casualties then.
4th Panzer-Div. captured almost 20,000 prisoners in Poland, according to German sources.
At the end of the 17th of IX 1939 German 4th Panzer Division had only 100 tanks (60 tanks in Panzer-Regiment 35. and around 40 tanks in P-R 36.). On 1. September it had 341 tanks (177 in P-R 35. & 164 in P-R 36.)
During the next few days this number decreased. At night from 19. to 20. IX the main part of the div. was withdrawed to Sochaczew because it was unable to continue fighting. Some units fought in Bzura-Kampinos region untill 24. of IX - then the division was withdrawed from the front.
propaganda, there never was an attack on on tanks, its propaganda. they got ambushed or something and charged past the tanks to get away instead of running back across an open field.
"The Russians(GPU) kicked the Polish Asses in Katyn and Levov. ;-)"
how could you say something like that?? that's not funny...
Katyn, Tver, Kharkiv and Kiev are the places were defenseless prisoners of war were killed without any purpose. For 50 years Soviets were lying about it. Would you call it funny, if I were joking about German soldiers who were killed or died from malnutrition in death camps in USSR??
Very brave, but also quite a foolish attempt by the staffers. Brave men like these should not have died that way. The well trained Polish lancers would have certainly be able to do same good aginst the German infantry.
"Yeah, thats a really great myth. But You all shall know that Poles never attacked tanks with sabres. It was a nazi propaganda. Nazis wanted to show to all Germans that non-aryan people are stupid. They were really embrassed when Russians kicked their asses on the eastern front. ;)"
sebbomatirx there is one thing that i hate in ppls that love to put post and make themselfs a wiseguys. Buy urself a book read about Polish defenses plans. About Germans for example fuel supplies and after that speak
Maby. But this 'not good army' fought in 1939 longer than France&GB in 1940...
'Woysko Polskie' was defeated not after two weeks but after five weeks with russian atackin from east.
And Germans won so quick because Poles formed very long but very thick frontline - they wanted to stop German just for a moment, because France and Britain sweared help. And they did... nothing.
Yeah, thats a really great myth. But You all shall know that Poles never attacked tanks with sabres. It was a nazi propaganda. Nazis wanted to show to all Germans that non-aryan people are stupid. They were really embrassed when Russians kicked their asses on the eastern front. ;)
For everyone who are stupid: Polish cavalry did not use sabres to fight with tanks or sth like that. Cavalry was armed with anti-tank guns and cannons. The cavalry attack in the end of this film was a run after retreating german soldiers (if you didn't see).
hplohish: The Poles contributed to the war effort significantly for a defeated nation. Battle Of Britain, Falaise (Normandy), Monte Cassino, Arnhem, Tobruk, Narvik, Battle for Berlin, disrupting of German supply flow to the Russian front, Enigma machine, recovery of V-1 rocket for the allies, acceptance of surrender of the German navy at Wilhelmshaven, etc., etc. They helped liberate towns in Holland, Belgium, Italy.
hplohish: Poland was soundly defeated by Germany. They were also attacked by the Soviets in the east. Poland was a much smaller country at the time and it only existed for 20 years as a reconstructed nation. It was partitioned for 125 years. Germany armed itself to the teeth between the two wars. Poland spend only less than 1% of it's GNP on the military. Poland was overwhelmed. The bigger question is where were France and Britain after they declared war on Germany ?????
When i read some texts from some sort of people i dont have words for your inteligence.
Polish soldiers (cavalery) never attack on horses.
Horse have only one order - to quickly move soldiers on the battlefield. Then polish soldiers fight without horses. This image is one of the german propagand and it's ofcourse false.
Stupid asshole, they went for the infantry, of course they would lose a few men by that armored vehicle, but you must think, it was war in that time and most of them were thinking they went to war like in the time of Napoleon, anyway, they went for the infantry!
In fact during September Campaign both sides had cavalry and also (yes, it's not a joke) Bicycle Regiments, but horses against tanks it's of course only propaganda.
Slaughter seems to be the general opinion, however in fact the poles out of 18 documented cavalry charges in the 1939 campaign 13 were succesfull. If fact at Mokra a polish cavalry squadron routed a German Infantry battalion....
Battle of Mokra .4th Panzer Divisions crossed the border in the operational sector of the Polish Volhynian cavalry brigade. The losses on both sides were quite high. The Germans lost approximately 800 men (killed, missing, captured or seriously wounded), and between 100 and 160 AFVs (at least 50 of them tanks). The Polish brigade lost 200 killed and 300 wounded, as well as 300 horses.
Lancers NEVER attacked tanks. Actually It never happened, It was a myth propagated by Nazi Germany's highly developed propaganda effort. The only cavalry charge of the campaign took place against an "leg" infantry regiment caught totally 'flat footed', and the lancers were supported by heavy machineguns. It was the German Infantry who were slaughtered in this case.
Therefore, as at Mokra, they did often face off with the German tank units using Bofors 37mm AT gunas and AT Rifl

globetrotter1121 polish cavalry did not charge on german tanks. it was goebbels propaganda to show poles as romantic idiots who sacrifice their lives in fucking stupid way. Inreality, during september campagin 1939 polish cavalery was used to quick move anti-tank bosfor cannons cal. 37 mm. and to charge on retreating german infantry.
andranEU 2 years ago
Germans were terrified by those charges on infantry, that is also why they created this lies. They said that in whole September Campaign they lost 15 000 soldiers but they lost such number in one Battle of Wizna against who? 720 troopers!
SparrowNoblePoland 2 years ago
this fake charge (popularized by goebbels propaganda) was during battle of mokra where german lost over 120 tanks. If you think that they have destroyed those tanks by saber or lances....uhm...well.....
True is that those german tanks were destryed by anti-tank bosfor cannons cal.37 mm. used by those cavalry.
andranEU 2 years ago

But, unless you were there and in charge, who knows...
cbjones241 3 years ago
This whole myth abot Polish lancers charging tanks with sabers was made up by Gobeles for the needs of Nazi propaganda machine.

Domen558 3 years ago 3

Domen558 3 years ago 3
17th September - heavy fighting of 4th Panzer Division and SS Leibstandarte near Mistrewice and Juljopol. Strenght of the 35. P-R in the evening is only 60 tanks, decreases during the next few days.
18. IX - 36. P-R and most of divisional units involved in heavy fighting along the Bzura line and almost destroyed by Poles. Part of Panzerabwehr-Abteilung forces was destroyed by Polish offensive across Bzura.
Domen558 3 years ago 3
1st Panzer Division which also attacks but from other direction, is defeated and encircled - most units are crushed or in panic. The division manage to get together and break through the front to German lines, but it tooks 1 day to even few days, for some units.
4th Panzer Division attack is also rejected - heavy losses sustained. Poles attack across the Bzura river, running ovber 36. Pz-Reg. and some other units - Germans suffer huge losses, Poles - enormous losses. But Poles break through.
Domen558 3 years ago 3
The division comes to the battle of Bzura and Puszcza Kampinoska (9-24 IX) on 15th of September.
On 16th of September - most part of the division and LAH start massive counterattack, together with other German divisions, against Polish forces of Army "Poznań" and "Pomorze".
Division fights in Mlodzieszki-Ruszyn-Bibijampol-Adampol area. Near Adampol the whole 6th Tanks Company is destroyed by Polish AT fire from the nearby forest. Leutnant Diebish dies, Leutnant Cossel is heavily wounded...
Domen558 3 years ago 3
During the attack Kaputy are captured, prisoners taken, Polish artillery pieces and AT-guns run over. Lots of amunition captured. Fights continue for several hours - in early night, in the darkness, Błonie are taken.
14 IX - in the meantime 31st Infanterie-Division comes to retook previous regimental positions, and the 35. P-R is orderred to attack together with LAH and 12th Infanterie-Regiment towards Bzura. Other units of the division are to protect the Bzura line and defend it from Poles.
Domen558 3 years ago 3
...Poles at Mszczonów - but it can't move from the defensive lines near Warsaw because it's involved in heavy defensive fights and hardly manage not to break and be defeated.
12-13 IX some units of Army "Łódź" which are withdrawing to Warsaw and Modlin, attack the positions of the division, but finally go to Modlin.
13 IX - 35. Panzer-Regiment withdraws from nearbyhood of Warsaw to regroup in Strzykuły - then it attacks together with SS Leibstandarte "Adolf Hitler" towards Błonie, at 14:30
Domen558 3 years ago 3
Domen558 3 years ago 3
Night of 9/10 and 10 IX - heavy fighting for the suburbs of Warsaw, many kms behind the frontline, several succesfull Polish counterattacks couse heavy losses to both sides. Several tanks destroyed (1 by artillery fire, few by Polish 7 TP tank attacks from Warsaw). The division is endagerred of being encircled by Polish forces (the ones coming forward Mszczonów and those from the west - Army "Lódź").
Domen558 3 years ago 3
In the late evening of 8 IX the first unit of the division (35. P-R) arrives near Warsaw and captures Raszyn - then it attacks Warsaw - however Warsaw is not prepared for defense, the division is repulsed under heavy casulaties. It withdraws. 9 IX - the rest of the division comes, second storm on Warsaw which takes all day - terribly heavy casualties (45 tanks completely lost, more than 60 damaged, many dozens trucks with dead and wounded soldiers). In the evening the division withdraws.
Domen558 3 years ago
The most important battles of the 4th Panzer-Division in Poland were:
Mokra (1. IX), Ostrowie-Kozinka (2-3 IX), forcing Warta River near Szczepolice, attacking west of Radomsko (3 IX), Forcing Widawka River (night 3/4 IX), Borowskie Mountains (2-6 IX; 4. P-D took part from 4. IX), "Sturmfahrt auf Warschau", avoiding the enemy, 40 km behind the frontline: Ujazd - Lubochnia - Rawa Mazowiecka (6-7 IX) - Rawa Maz. is 115 km from Warsaw; "Vorwärts nach Warschau" (8 IX).
Domen558 3 years ago
Units of the division often used Polish civilians and POWs (most of them were wounded POWs) as "living shields" - for the first time during the battle of Mokra.
After Polish victory in Mszczonów, where Polish units attacked backs of the division causing heavy losses, the division took revenge - it murderred 11 Polish prisoners in small village between Mszczonów and Warsaw.
Domen558 3 years ago

Domen558 3 years ago
At the end of the 17th of IX 1939 German 4th Panzer Division had only 100 tanks (60 tanks in Panzer-Regiment 35. and around 40 tanks in P-R 36.). On 1. September it had 341 tanks (177 in P-R 35. & 164 in P-R 36.)
During the next few days this number decreased. At night from 19. to 20. IX the main part of the div. was withdrawed to Sochaczew because it was unable to continue fighting. Some units fought in Bzura-Kampinos region untill 24. of IX - then the division was withdrawed from the front.

how could you say something like that?? that's not funny...
Katyn, Tver, Kharkiv and Kiev are the places were defenseless prisoners of war were killed without any purpose. For 50 years Soviets were lying about it. Would you call it funny, if I were joking about German soldiers who were killed or died from malnutrition in death camps in USSR??

but poland has not good army
germany won the war in poland after just two weeks
think the whole world needed a much longer time to defeat germany
usa russia and uk and france had to be allies to defeat germany
Sebbomatrix 4 years ago
And they did... nothing.

ScrewyLouie666 4 years ago
hplohish: Poland was soundly defeated by Germany.
ScrewyLouie666 4 years ago 4
When i read some texts from some sort of people i dont have words for your inteligence.
Polish soldiers (cavalery) never attack on horses.
Horse have only one order - to quickly move soldiers on the battlefield. Then polish soldiers fight without horses. This image is one of the german propagand and it's ofcourse false.

jcwilliamsmustdie5 4 years ago
Stupid asshole, they went for the infantry, of course they would lose a few men by that armored vehicle, but you must think, it was war in that time and most of them were thinking they went to war like in the time of Napoleon, anyway, they went for the infantry!

I have great respect for the cavalry (not only the polish one) but lets be honest: It was a slaughter.
1aschnitzel 4 years ago
Slaughter seems to be the general opinion, however in fact the poles out of 18 documented cavalry charges in the 1939 campaign 13 were succesfull. If fact at Mokra a polish cavalry squadron routed a German Infantry battalion....
piechota1939 4 years ago 2
Battle of Mokra .4th Panzer Divisions crossed the border in the operational sector of the Polish Volhynian cavalry brigade. The losses on both sides were quite high. The Germans lost approximately 800 men (killed, missing, captured or seriously wounded), and between 100 and 160 AFVs (at least 50 of them tanks). The Polish brigade lost 200 killed and 300 wounded, as well as 300 horses.
grizz8 4 years ago
Lancers NEVER attacked tanks. Actually It never happened, It was a myth propagated by Nazi Germany's highly developed propaganda effort. The only cavalry charge of the campaign took place against an "leg" infantry regiment caught totally 'flat footed', and the lancers were supported by heavy machineguns. It was the German Infantry who were slaughtered in this case.
