Best way to deal with them is just to give arguments supporting your point of view and explaining in detail why his opinion is wrong until he runs out of arguments and makes fool out of himself. If you cant find arguments perhaps both of you are so called smart asses.

that's what he does already. to have a good argument is to get the person thinking about something else then they have to put their foot in their mouth when the admit to something and contradict themself. when you get them to contradict themself they loose credibility. most often a person that is hard to deal with will be annoying like use lawyer tactics but if you can subtly get them talking about their own views it changes picture and you can either get them to agree or contradict.

Off course this is harder to do in a complex issue. the key is to be subtle and keep them talking inspecifically to gain information or an advantage. Don't ever be direct things come out casually. that's how you either win your view or make them look like an arrogant fool. it's much better than a shouting match to resolve something. i hope this helps. good luck.
