The fight at 0:47 was the first MMA contest that I had ever seen. I'll always remember Pat Smith since he was truly something to behold in those days. No jiu-jitsu at all, pure striker. I had never seen anything like that before. MMA actually meant mixed martial arts back then; now it's essentially its own fighting style.

In 1993 Pat fought and won the Sabaki Challenge as a Robotia stylist, a mixed martial art that was created here in Denver in the late 70's. If you look at the August 1993 issue of Black Belt Magazine on page 17, that is the style he fights under. I trained with Pat in Denver on several occasions, although the bulk of my training came from Larry L. Williams. Funny, I ran into him in '04 at an event, and he claimed no knowledge of of the style, it roots or our instructors. What a class act.

Those clips from the Andy Hug fights, Smith should have been disqualified from the first fight and 'got knocked out' / gave up in the second fight.

hell yea dude, you use to see so much crazy shit in the old days of UFC. Kung-fu guys would show up, sumo guys would sho up, ninjitsu guys would show up. And you had a chance to see alot of random martial arts in action. Now theres no diversity.

@HitMan1263 Yeah, it's just a sport hybrid now with plenty of rules. Half of the "real fight" techniques aren't allowed anymore. Also, the bare-knuckle punching used to really hurt the downed opponent and fight would end. Now the downed opponent can get punched many times & win the fight later because the aggressor punches himself out with the gloves on. In the earlier UFCs, the downed opponent would get thrashed & not be able to come back. I much preferred the older UFC, it was "Pure" fighting.
