This guy has like 4 blackbelts and knows like 7 different fighting styles. PAT SMITH knows how to fight! But its kinda funny how he's not really skilled in any of the ground game grappling martial arts lol.
Early UFC was brutal back in the day. Now its like the evolution of fighting, Learn what works throw out what doesn't. At the end a lot of people think there is no more diversity but individuals are diverse. Get in any ring and your not representing 'karate' or 'judo' you are representing yourself.
The fight at 0:47 was the first MMA contest that I had ever seen. I'll always remember Pat Smith since he was truly something to behold in those days. No jiu-jitsu at all, pure striker. I had never seen anything like that before. MMA actually meant mixed martial arts back then; now it's essentially its own fighting style.
I'm glad somebody put this together, as I think Pat Smith was the 'baddest' guy in the old days of MMA - forget Ken Shamrock, Gracie, Severn etc, Smith was so vicious and unpredictable. Nice head kick at the Sabaki (which he won prior to UFC 1)
white, black, yellow, brown. pat was bad! nobody i know can dodge lead!! U? pussys talk shit all day and day. my brother fights, not for a living but ill bet greenbacks he could beat the shit out all you fucks "chatting" 907 AK
that the pat smith won? only lost from the K1 to the ufc!. Arrogant, so lost, Nung won shit, it's a shame. Loser of everything he played, he took two punches to the face and beat Royce Gracie, fear of getting more. I hate this guy. I am Brazilian, tbm hate Anderson Silva
In 1993 Pat fought and won the Sabaki Challenge as a Robotia stylist, a mixed martial art that was created here in Denver in the late 70's. If you look at the August 1993 issue of Black Belt Magazine on page 17, that is the style he fights under. I trained with Pat in Denver on several occasions, although the bulk of my training came from Larry L. Williams. Funny, I ran into him in '04 at an event, and he claimed no knowledge of of the style, it roots or our instructors. What a class act.
anyway, awsom video! I think that if pat smith would have keep on fighitng in the UFC those days, he would be an hall of famer.
He is the first one, from fighting with one style, to understand the importance of mixing it up, and you can see it in the few times he fought in the UFC.
@yamasnik hall of fame me hole,he never developed any decent wrestling or groundwork in all the years he fought and would always lose to grapplers. He wasnt even a great striker
are you a martial artist? If so, think about fighting Ken Shamrock in his prime, in the first ever competition of it's kind, when you are a kickboxer and street fighter. Then add in that grappling and grappling defense was not well known at the time. Then actually watch the fight again look at the big gash under Ken's eye, and how long Pat tries to strike his way out of one of the most painful locks in martial arts.If you're not a martial artist, please keep your uninformed, moronic opinions2 ureself
well who won the fight?:) Smith cried and said "please dont hurt me no more sir". Ken shamrock kicked his ass and yes I have trained more martial arts than you done junior.
try to admire fighters rather than "ride their nuts" and not make dumb, degrading comments about who your favourite has beaten. hating wont make you happy
lol who said i was hating the guy? I just said Ken shamrock kicked his ass. pat smith wasent a speciell great fighter, most of ufc participants in the heviweight division today would have beaten him. Sorry to cross your illusion
ofcourse the fighters of today would probably beat the fighters of old(shamrock included). every sport evolves and the level increases. i just enjoy watching his fights and i never said pat smith was the best in mma. it seems you have an illusion that it makes you cool by posting comments such as "Ken Shamrock kicked smiths ass anyway:)". please explain why you felt it was so important to post that comment.
@Radeo - yes, Pat made some terrible decisions in his past. He paid for them, he is ashamed and is a changed man today. Just like President George Bush used to be an alcoholic and suffered shame. This is a tribute video. Let's keep it that way!
@Radeo and you wouldn't say shit to him about it if he knocked on your door and told you that. "Mr. Smith nice to meet you, come in and fuck my 16 year old daughter, please."
@Radeo You don't know the specifics-it's not anything against a child under 14, it could be a lie, you're just a judgemental prick. When one moved into our nieghborhood we did our research-when it turned out he was a sick fuck, we got rid of him in less than a week. But people can be on that list that aren't pedophiles or rapists. You think Mike Tyson, who's also a registered sex offender is actually guilty-grow a brain&I hate Tyson. You're a retarded judgmental moron&probably inbred&smelly
hell yea dude, you use to see so much crazy shit in the old days of UFC. Kung-fu guys would show up, sumo guys would sho up, ninjitsu guys would show up. And you had a chance to see alot of random martial arts in action. Now theres no diversity.
@HitMan1263 Yeah, it's just a sport hybrid now with plenty of rules. Half of the "real fight" techniques aren't allowed anymore. Also, the bare-knuckle punching used to really hurt the downed opponent and fight would end. Now the downed opponent can get punched many times & win the fight later because the aggressor punches himself out with the gloves on. In the earlier UFCs, the downed opponent would get thrashed & not be able to come back. I much preferred the older UFC, it was "Pure" fighting.
thank you for this, you are a real MMA fan to recognize Pat's contribution to MMA. His destruction of Scott Morris in UFC 2 was the best advertisment in ufc history and more than quadrupled the sports popularity. Also, no one in the history of MMA could destroy a scrub like Pat Smith
@Xclubkid22 I saw that. Scott Morris got a real pasting there. Whatever weapons or fieldcraft skills he had with ninjutsu were of no importance when it's one on one, directly facing each other, unarmed.
He is unquestionably a pioneer of the PROFESSIONAL SPORT of mixed martial arts, but no, not of the SCIENCE of mixed martial arts. Most people that remember the early days of MMA have a sense of the truth of that statement.

Those clips from the Andy Hug fights, Smith should have been disqualified from the first fight and 'got knocked out' / gave up in the second fight.
when Pat had to get stuck in and fight he always gave up and usually pretended to be knocked out or injured.
