  • You did manage to capture some of the awesome intake resonance howl! Of course it sounds much louder as the aircraft is approaching. The howl was heard in flight at this year's Sunderland Airshow as the Vulcan powered up. Another great video, Paul.

  • Holy shit it the pilot had to steer it all the way down the runway.

It's great to see a piece of aviation history still flying because more often than not they end up as museum pieces only.

  • Great footage. Brings back many memories from Bitteswell days, where British Aerospace looked after the old girls. And that was the 70's!

Did anyone see the Cuban 8 from take off at the Paris air show waaaay back? Same time as the Starfighter was in circuit.

The howl could be heard anywhere if the throttles are opened enough!

  • Only thing missing was the howl.

    Great stuff again Paul.

  • you only really get the howl when you're in front of the vulcan. That's why whenever i go and see it, i make sure i'm at the far end of the runway

  • Nick lots of us at Brize were in front of 558 but no howl. Blizzard has a video of a similar display with the howl very noticeable. It is as much to do with power settings as posittion of the listener. But you are right as the howl is caused by the huge volume of air being sucked into the intakes and these act like giant "organ pipes" . If the throttles are opened far enough however the howl can be heard in flight as 558 powers up. Throttle settings are now reduced to preserve engine life.

  • Anyone see the slight vear off the runway halfway down the runway? Saw that as I was looking through the viewfinder of my camera!

  • I thought it was a bit of a wobbly take off! Great view on the vid!

  • Brilliant, Paul - as usual !! Great to see XH558 where She belongs - in the air.

A nice start to a great 2009 airshow season - See you all at Waddo.

    KPM aka "aka"

  • Thanks Paul, this is fantastic. I think that was a bit more than a wiggle prior to take off though, think he unstuck just in time !! note the runway centreline at takeoff AWESOME. Thank you

  • superb!

  • awsome

  • Hello Children!

The Howl is caused by resonance in the intakes, not often heard from behind and tis much better when you stood under her.!

  • Great to see her back in the air and still flying in the UK where she belongs.

Kevin always seems to throw her around a bit more. Not that I'm complaining! ;)

  • Poetry in motion !!

Thanks Paul.. great stuff as usual :)))

  • Her display routine is certainly better and longer than last years! Really can't wait to see her at Cosford tomorrow. :D:D

  • Epic stuff, Paul :)

I must get myself to Brize one day this year.

  • Whoa, you can see the wind take her on take off! Excellent footage mate. Thanks.

  • What a howl and verticalascent! Who was the pilot today? He was flinging her about. So, so beautiful. My mascara is running copiously. Well done gal and well done Cluny, Thank you.

  • I belive it was Kev Rumans [sp ?] and Martin Withers today ;)

    Cheers Shari xx

  • Excellent as always Paul. Thanks. Have a good one tomorrow.

  • Cheers Steve :)

Il try , somehow i feel Cosfords going to be packed lol XD

  • yeah, he said he saw them and i agree

  • Cor blimey, what a take off :D (what's with the wiggle down the runway at T/O? lol)

But is it just me, or not much howl? Maybe I just don't have the volume loud enough ;) lol

Well anyway, still amazing to have her back in the air where she belongs XD

I cannot wait till Waddington!! :D

  • You don't tend to hear so much howl from the back, as I think most of that particular sound somes from the air being sucked in through the intakes. Engineering types correct me if I'm wrong! What you get from behind is more of a 'ROAR'. The first time I ever saw a Vulcan take off last year I was behind her, and I will never forget how the ground literally shook. It was exhilarating. AMAZING video by the way Paul :)

  • Yeah you're probably right :) :D

Although my vid of her at Coningsby is from sort of behind and I got a pretty good howl ;) lol

  • Ahh there was a RAF Brize Nortons Families Day today I live near RAF Lyneham and two VC10 flew over in formation that will explain that then. Then two small planes in formation flew over as well
