  • Going to try to learn this solo for my jazz class wish me luck ;)

  • Favorited the F*ck outta this

  • WWOOOoOoOOUUu ..♥

  • The bari is da bomb! This is wicked good stuff!

  • Him and chet baker...man what good music

  • so cool!

  • i... love... the BARITONE! such a rich full sound. i hope i can play like this man one day

  • I love Gerry Mulligan's improvising. He deserves the accolades he received in his long career.

  • ((A W E S O M E ))

  • is that the actual mulligan?

  • I discovered Gerry Mulligan because of a customer I had back in 2002 where i worked. He was a really old guy and he said he was Gerry Mulligan and that he played on Broadway. I was interested to see him play so i looked up Gerry Mulligan only to find out that he died in 1996 and the old guy was lying to me! lol. ah well, well worth the discovery!

  • @Deftones202 did he look like mulligan?

  • @rf1308 Maybe a little bit, but not a lot.

  • @Deftones202 oh darn i woulda said that u saw his ghost.. that would have been cool... we all miss mulligan

  • I know what I'm playing on my bari for the next jazz festival...

  • sax's are so sexy..candy dulfer one of my lovely fave..sax player...

  • @zackyko theyre "Bari saxy"

  • The King!!!

  • @Aljazz67 no its a Conn 10M with a gale 5m mouthpiece, his signature set-up, he rarely used anything else, he switched between a Gold plated 10M (seen here) and a silver plated 10M every now and again

  • @wasdead917 Indeed, it is a Gale Companion mouthpiece (won't swear to the size as he easily could've had it refaced), but though he's playing a Conn "M" Artist Series baritone sax, the bari version is the "12M," not to be confused with the 10M tenor.

  • @soulfullyanointed i stand corrected

  • is the a selmer mark XI ?

  • Im going to play this song on saturday

good way to get some advice =]

  • Didn't this guy play with Mingus?

  • He used a conn crossbar

  • don't say anything if you don't know what your talking about

  • Gerry was also a fine piano player. Check out "davidwri..." in the video responses above and you'll see!

  • I saw my dad struggle with the weight of the Tenor in his later years ( he had arthritis in the neck)

You would want to be in tip-top shape to play a bari as you get older! but then, you could always switch to alto, they are both Eb horns. ;-)

  • shoulda switched to a harness

  • Nah, alto sucks. I'd find a way to play the bari ;D

  • I enjoy playing both Bari and Alto, it all depends on what I'm in the mood for. But that's just me...

  • same here :))) Enjoy the Bari more though, personally..

  • Tits or gtfo

  • Wow, a baritone taking the lead part sounds strangely natural. Definitely works.

  • @tomski3 I think bari is a very underrated instrument. It's not just a "low" instrument like a lot of people seem to think; the range is perfect.

  • @tomski3 It's not strange anymore since he and Pepper Adams brought the Bari to a soloist position, in the '50s!

I usually prefer Adams as a baritone player, but Mulligan is Mulligan....

  • @tomski3 hell, any instrument works if u sound good

  • bari sax is the best!

  • wow tough crowd

  • They a buncha squares.

  • Gerry Mulligan is one of my all time fav Jazz players!!

  • ...me two :)

  • @WhiteBlazingLight mine also

  • this crowd is sooo dead and he's awesome...it doesn't make any sense!

  • I'm not an envious person but how I envy those who heard Gerry Mulligan live!

  • For a good reason too, a fine player and a true gentleman. Check out the piano player in his late quartet, Ted Rosenthal.

  • I love Gerry,toca muy lindo!plaplapla +plaplapla+plaplapla+ espectacular para bailarlo 1 y dos,vuelta y 1,2 media,media vuelta ,vuelta....

  • Gerry Mulligan is my idol :D

  • Re: Horn Selection: I always liked the Selmer, with a softer reed that I then trimmed down by hand. For some reason, it always worked for me.

  • I've been playing bari for a lifetime... I wanna be Gerry Mulligan when I grow up.

  • honsetly.....who doesnt want to be like mulligan. lol. he's the undisputed master of baritone sax.

i dont want to get you down on your dream, but now-a-days, its really hard to make it as a solo artist like mulligan. most people now-a-days, play gigs for hire. and occasionally their own gig. few people in this day and age make it as a solo artist.

  • i dont, I find that his sound is too wet. I like Pepper Adams the player who did the original Mingus Big Band version of Moanin', now thats some Bari playing my friend ;)

  • lol at 1:40 the man in the audience looks either drunk or got ut to sleep by one of the greatest jazz songs ever

  • ke buena interpretación, aunque la melodia es facil ,le mete un power chingon.

    a wevo!

  • Muy buena música. Un gran compositor, una bella melodía y un gran intérprete. Saludos desde México.

  • Cool Jazz,

    really cool

  • No matter what music I am exposed to. No matter if I'm listening to hip hop or rock or anything else...

Nothing makes me more in balance than listening to Jazz. Especially Gerry Mulligan or Stan Getz...

  • He is my bari idol

  • I just realized something about Gerry's sound. It's not edgy, at all. There's no "make-the-audience's stomach rumble" sound from him. It's smooth.

  • Fantastic version. Short musical phrases repeated several times and final crescendo.

    GM legend.

  • Satan Doll is what every big band musician has called this tune since Ellington first recorded it around 1939.

  • hey, that's a funny thing. why/. it's not that complicated ;]

  • Is this off of a video or something that is commercially available? How could I get a full copy of this video? I would love to be able to show the whole performance to my students. Mulligan had his bari goldplated around 1993 and he died in 1996, so for this to be added in the last ten months, it had to have come from somewhere. As far as horn recommendations go, get a Conn. They worked for Mulligan and Carney.

  • Gerry fantastic sound has also dueto the fact that he tunes the horn just a slightly bit sharp, never flat, he is floating.

  • E CHE COMMENTO SI PUO' FARE?

  • 爽!

  • Ability to unsap Satin Doll - cool

  • Mystic...

  • my sax teacher /mentor is always telling me stories about him. he's 90 this year and he once played with GM himself , and both of them are true legends. I recently sold my conn bari and got a new jupiter 900 series and theres an amazing ease to play it and the sound is fantastic and louder than the old conn i had.

  • id have a conn cross barr over a jupiter anyday ,much better sound but i guess its a personal thing

  • What kind of horn is that?

  • its an early conn new wonder or conn "Tranny" bari not a 12M like he played in his early years

  • thanks man. I truely love conns. They paly with such a wonderful full tone. just listen to Harry Carney!

  • Most pictures we see of him are with a Conn New wonder II, more a Chu Berry than a naked lady 10M. I think he played mostly a Chu. The neck is larger than french horns.

  • a cap horn

  • im using a conn at school i personnaly dislike it cant reach over the high A without a shitload of air sounds discusting in the high piched octave which would you recommend yamaha 62 or selmer USA?

  • fantastic!!!

    Love it!!

  • My all time Favorite.

  • Merveilleux.

    Superbe.

    Mulligan était le maître.
