there are a lot of profound comments here regarding musical meaning and society. it's interesting to see how this might relate to the popular songs of today. An interesting sociological debate. Just to point out though, everyone here has typed "if the man in the moon were a coon" into youtube.
My ancestors didn't commit crimes. They did what every other country tried to do which is world dominance. People are pissed because the white race succeeded in their efforts. America should be a homogeneous country of white people. All races should have their own country.
@DEB0714 keep telling yourself that shit. You white people are the biggest criminals that ever lived. When the bible syas that 'their sins reached unto the heavens' they were talking about you people. As for shit about 'succeeding in your efforts' you stood on the shoulders of giants to 'achieve' that. there were greater civilisations than the pot of shit that the white race is so proud of. But you all need to salve your conscience with made up shit to keep you all from smelling yourselves
@DEB0714 your stupid little 'empire' is already finished and its only been 2,000 years. You're pathetic and too stupid to work out that the world is not run by selfishness and dominance, but by cooperation and mutual respect under God, who is the supreme ruler of creation, not no pencil dick peckerwood cave dweller who thinks he is God.
@DEB0714 while you're boasting I hope you have finished your research on how you are all going to keep your white asses from frying in the new temperatures that the sun is going to be throwing out because really you are aliens to this planet. This is a black planet whether you like it or not. Melanated, dark pigmented or coloured skin of some sort is ESSENTIAL this close to the sun, which is why you are all dropping like flies down there in Australia.
@DEB0714 I'm British, so you must forgive me if I don't fully understand. When do the white folks plan to hand America back to it's original owners? Oh, and if you want to come home to your white European roots, I'm sorry to say we already have our quota of white sheets and burning crosses.
all this talk of racism makes me wanna shine a light on the fact that rap music in general has caused more division, set more bad examples and along with tv, has blatantly encouraged people to disengage from culture and wisdom and flat out hate one another.it goes back to rome, much further back as well..division forces people to choose sides and it alienates and creates rivalry which in turn manifests hatred..its a game..and virtually every human on the planet subscribes.youve been brainwashed
I could patch this into the PA system at the mall. Wonder how long it would take somebody to notice it's not that fucking Xmas music they start playing after Thanksgiving?
this song is very ignorant. Im a young successful blacc man living in denver colorado. The white people singing these coon songs are just as much a nigger as the blacc writing some of this bullshit.. White niggers and blacc niggers. They are all dumb, ignorant, fuccs.,
@Eastside28Kee ...spelling "black" "blacc" is dumb, ignorant. You must be a young successful blacc man living in Denver, Colorado. I can tell by reading your comment.
Folks, you can't judge people then by today's PC standards. We call this racist but many blacks wrote and sang coon songs--it was very popular. Black vaudeville started the coon songs and white artists picked up on them because they liked the songs and dances but could not perform them for white audiences without blacking their faces first--that's how it was then. Simply to say they were all racists is a cop-out. It's a bit more complicated than that.
@Kirke182 no, they were racists. racism was simply accepted by society. whether someone is a member of the race thats the target of the racism doesnt mean that they arent also a person that is a participant. im not saying that one cant enjoy the songs though. just keep them in an appropriate historical and cultural context.
@frelkarox And is it accepted by society today? Yes. Rap proves that. And none of these old songs encourage young black men to kill each other or call women "Bitch." So you tell me what's worse and who the racists really are.
@Kirke182 No no NO! You my sir have it all wrong. This song is not vaudeville, it is minstrel. Minstrel music started in the early 1800's and then whites were calling blacks niggers in the music and making fun of their skin and facial features. So how can you say that whites were inspired by black music and dance when this all began pre-civil war? And no the reason whites were in blackface was to make fun of African americans and to justify the reason for slavery.
Its interesting that so many songs around the 1920s which insinuated sex were banned because people found it to be incredibly offensive. Today, we find racism and sexism offensive, but not sex. If any songs were banned today, it would be songs like this. I suppose its the sociology of progress.
go to british columbia no one is rascist because there is no need to be not enough of each ethnicity watch these people on the streets in new york or jersey idiots are taught by other idiots you can be a white idiot a black idiot a mexican idiot sadly now an asian idiot.
but if your smart there is no ethnicity involved people are morons now a days and they are morons of there types rascism comes with how stupid you are if you can act civil and appropriat there is onlyone way you can be not a nigger not a gook or chink or bean or cracker your just a person but now a days mostly we have any of the rascist terms
i have saidthats mostly what we have if you disagree its probably because your not that smart type or people and just a classic rascist joke rascism started by hate and believed rights but now it all ends with attitude except in the south
but still they became that way because they hate the certain attitude just like we all do we all hat something that is stereotype rascist but dont deny it just dont judg a book by its cover and become an intelligent normal person
Ada's Edison recording of this song (Edison 9372) reached #3 in March-April 1907. With more than 100 hits to her crdit, Ms. Jones was the most popular female singers of the pre-1920 era. Is this song racist? Keep a couple of facts in mind. 1) Ethnic stereotypes were a vaudeville staple in theatres frequented by those very same ethnic groups (black, Jewish, etc.). 2) Most coon songs were written by black composers, performed by black entertainers and made famous in black vaudeville houses.
Funny over 100 yrs later....and not much has changed. We still kill each other, still hate, both black and white. Blacks hate whites, and whites dont want blacks near them. The hatred is now silent but still just as intense as it was 100 yrs ago.
@jsbeerman I cant speak for all "blacks" but as far as I know, african americans dont hate white folks, we hate racism and being treated any differently than anyone else. I have plenty of white friends and plenty of other friends from all different races, and from my experience if a black person expresses a disliking towards a white person its because that particular person has done something to cross them, not because that person is white.
@jsbeerman I dunno, its still intense in some places but that is more down to the individuals. I know a lot of people where its chilled out. It also depends on integration between communities. Where I live currently there is a lot of integration so everyones really chilled out and we all banter with each other even taking the piss out of each others racial backgrounds, but everyone knows its a joke and we love each other really, we just find it funny being dicks to each other lol
@ClintDuza perhaps in certain mixed communities they are more educated. Like those living in center city / business area...or an area like Univ of Penn where a mixed all live together and work.....however, in an ALL black area, or getto ( most cities ) its not a place for whites....and of course the reverse...White Suburbs...these folks arent going to take too kindly to blacks moving in. We have not evolved yet....perhaps in a 1000 yrs,...when there r no more chips on ppls shoulders or excuses
@runn1ng If the man on the moon were black instead of its typical glowing white, it would be dark outside. It's clever, because that actually happens once a month. This is the wrong song to get stuck in your head though.
ah 104 year old coon related music on youtube where racism lies.... beautiful ain't it? not. i feel so bad and shameful for ur sinful hearts. may those chains be lifted and someday bring u all freedom in righteousness
This is obviously a 4 minute cylinder, but what make ? Indestructible ? U.S. Everlasting? 4 Minute Amberol. As a collector I am interested in knowing. I had never heard the 2 verse on record before. I have the two minute Edison version that contains only the 1st verse.
What record label was this rendition of the song recorded on? I have never heard the complete song like this with both verses. I have the Edison 2 minute black wax recording which only contains the first verse and chorus.
@PhyllisLapinVance i just did some research. apparently a coon is a black person. and i guess thats y she says if the man on the moon was black, they'd be dark enuff to cover the moon with their shade of skin. im black myself, and i find this offensive even for me as a women. how r these songs still existent here?
The only solution is to write a song about killing white people and feeding them to wild hogs as a casual way to pass time. Yes! Lets be witty and make hateful songs about killing dumb white people. I love it!
@randomdave30 You know, Jasper the darkey jabbering on about how the man in the moon is a coon. But that can't be because if that were true then he'd shade out the moonlight... And we all know that never happens.
I don't know either. I know nowt about politics, I don't vote. What I DO know is the fact that I work my balls off and get a great big lump of it taken away from my wages, like its being stolen from me. Thats OK for the police, fire brigade etc. But the Cunts in office take their share with their bumped up wages and give immergrants more excuses to fuck our econemy up even further. As for this song, I wonder if the Victorians shot there self in the foot by opening the gates;and no Im not rasist.
Hey, Mick, stop moaning. We all have to pay our taxes. How else are we supposed to maintain such deserving causes as the civil list, and endless generations of layabouts, degenerates and spongers whose idea of a career is shitting out illegitimate bastards to claim money on? What a carry-on!
