Folks, you can't judge people then by today's PC standards. We call this racist but many blacks wrote and sang coon songs--it was very popular. Black vaudeville started the coon songs and white artists picked up on them because they liked the songs and dances but could not perform them for white audiences without blacking their faces first--that's how it was then. Simply to say they were all racists is a cop-out. It's a bit more complicated than that.

Is this song racist? Keep a couple of facts in mind. 1) Ethnic stereotypes were a vaudeville staple in theatres frequented by those very same ethnic groups (black, Jewish, etc.). 2) Most coon songs were written by black composers, performed by black entertainers and made famous in black vaudeville houses.
