singing Am Israel Chai in Germany wasn't meant to be ironic, it was meant to make a point, and it gives me goosebumps everytime I watch it!! RIP Ofra!
What a beautiful people and somehow I always fall for Israel way of singing. They somehow bring Muslim songs closer to my heart and that brings me to the everlasting love in the Hindi music and the emotions in the china way of singing....... Omg. I love my world. We are all the same with same fears and same way of love. And same lame way of projecting our shadows on to others.
All who have watched ESC in 1983 on tv knew Sweden won the finale :) So you who wrote Sweden should win instead and Carola was the best singers haven't you watched this ESC finale on TV and should know Carola won with her song Främling? Then I assume you haven't followed the ESC finales throught the years hehe :)
The song is barely average even by the low standards of the time but the arrangement is something horrible. A really sub-standard effort at producing stereotypical Euro-orchestra international-style crap and above all else it does not go with Ofra's voice or style at all.
But even in the wreckage that is this pap-pop crap, you can still hear just how original and special she was. Its such a shame that her first big international exposure was this POS song.
This song is my winner in 1983, to bad the voting part became slightly political whats probably the reason Israël didn't won. A shame that 6 million of these people were killed, Jews brought the world many many important and wonderful people of the past and now in all regions. Im Dutch, but bless Israël!

@YemenHistoryBC Yes, woman in your country can`t show their legs, so I understand what you mean:-) Greetings from Norway and good luck with your democracy process:-)
For Israel to send a singer to sing 'I'm still alive.. life'
on a german stage in-front of a televised audience made Israel a winner before the first vote had been cast. This song is incredibly special to jewish and Israeli people and also for anyone who believes in endurance of the human spirit. Long live the hopes of all decent human beings.
@olmaBLN It's about the Jews being still alive! Even after the "final solution" trial...
It's at least beautiful to see that in western culture we can get over some tragic episodes, not like the muslims who thing that the west is still fighting "crusades" against them!
Then this was surely the special "Germany-Song" ;-)
However, I am glad, that today the cruel past is not the main theme, if Germans and Israelis ( or jews ) are meeting together! Pitty of cource the low, but dangerous numbers of dumbheads, dreaming old masterrace dreams, or violent religious dreams!
Hope, some day, they will be wiped out by reality and peace will come, for everybody!
Listen, my brothers, I'm still alive And my two eyes are still raised to the light Many are my thorns, but also my flowers And ahead of me are years too numerous to count I ask and I pray It's good that hope was not yet lost A psalm passes from generation to generation Like a spring from long ago, and on to eternity I ask and I pray It's good that hope was not yet lost
A psalm passes from generation to generation Like a spring from long ago, and on to eternity I ask and I pray It's good that hope was not yet lost Chorus: Alive, alive, alive - Yes, I'm still alive! This is the song which grandfather Sang yesterday to father And today I [sing] I'm still alive, alive, alive The people of Israel live This is the song which grandfather Sang yesterday to father And today I [sing]!
wow... what a wonderful song....! i heard she came to turkey too? i would love to visit israel one day.. i hope the turkish-israeli relations will become better again cause i love israel
I think the lyrics may have let it down. It is about how Israel is alive and always will be, no matter what happens to it. Well that's the gist of the lyrics.
I'm not saying whether this sentiment is right or wrong, but it is a bit political and perhaps they are not good lyrics for a Eurovision song. Apart from anything I can't think any other song that has won with lyrics about a geographical location.

@comeinnorway People should really stop thinking that everything we do or say it's politic. The lyrics of this beautiful song are a way to express our feelings to the world, that we still here, with everything we've been through. And not to send some kind of messege. And it has nothing to do with the rights or wrongs of Israel's existence.
You are absolutely correct. But it is difficult when Israel does send songs like Push The Button, which had a very clear political message. If Israel sends a very politcal song like that then people will wonder if other songs have political undertones. I am not saying it is right or wrong but some people in the world may take offence at a song that glorifies Israel's existence.

@comeinnorway You right on one thing, Push The Button was really out of line, and most people in Israel protest againts it. But we usually seprate Politic from our everyday life because we need some kide of distraction from what happens aroud us. So you won't find a lot of political songs in Israel :) Thank God....
@UnderclasSum41 I'm surprised to hear that people in Israel didn't like Push The Button. I have a Jewish friend in Northern Ireland who loved it and still has it as her ringtone. I'm glad Israelis think like that. There's no need to try and cause trouble with Iran and deffo not in Eurovision.
Apart from the politics of Push The Button I thought it was a rubbish song. Israel is my favourite ESC country but they deserve better than that.
I adore that Song. I don´t know why Hebrew sounds that great, even if you don´t understand a Word (except of Chay & Israel:-). So much better than Luxembourg that Year & 1 of my Israeli Favourites Songs ever:-)
Oh, shut up! Israel did a good try with a very diplomatic song this year. This is not a forum for hateful and inpropriate expressions like that. Grow up.
Mr Shotgun Jake, Turkey, Cyprus (technically near east Asia) along with Israel. Armenia, Azerbaijan. Take out your Atlas and go learn something real, then learn how silly you look right here.
Israel has been competing in the Eurovision for many many years. It also participates in European sports events. Unfortunately all the countries around have no diplomatic relationships with Israel so it cannot participate in the local events.
Very beautiful song. I think that was the big mistake for the judges not giving this song first place.. and R.I.P. to those who were murdered in Munich Massacre.

@jude11011 you talk like you won?You came second to Luxembourg! I am English and no offense to you personally, but I do not see Israelis as people with a high human spirit .Palestine say no more ! The British Government no better, never has been .You have to learn to forgive the German people it was not their fault . All Governments are corrupt ,yours more so. The song was not bad though!
@7geordie Where to begin.. First of all Israel, the jewish people and no other nation on earth ever put men women and children in ovens. The palestinian issue is too complex historically to make snap judgments.Jewish people have come a long way in forgiving germans though the whole world has doubts about a nation who claim complete ignorance of a national 5 year genocidal program. Personally I liked the song from Luxembourg. I don't know you. Your comments are quite ignorant but I'll forgive you

i love how she got 2nd place in Munich, where years before jews were massacred. i find this very symbolic and her song is truly amazing. Ofra Haza, you were beautiful, we miss you!
Bom 2º lugar. Depois do Luxemburgo esta foi a composição de que eu mais gostei. Óptima voz a da vocalista, bem secundada por uma coreografia simples mas bem executada.
and i am israeli and hebrew is my daily language, chai means alive, אני חי. but in the end hebrew is a semetic language and english isnt so translations are never 100% accurate. its best to use it in context of the song, she say chaix3 ken ani od chai which as a sentence means 'alive x3 yes, i am still alive'
Transalation: Listen my Brothers! I still alive and my eyes are srare to the light only in my bodices but also with my flowers and before of me more years from what we can count So I ask and pray It's good we didn't lose the hope We pass the psalm from genaration to another. like a spring from the past and forever so i ask and pray it's good we didn't lose the hope

Yeshua aniqui Ha Dereck, va Ha Emet, Va Chayim
Turn ye again now every one from his evil way
and from the evil of your doings and dwell in the land that the Lord has given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever

על מה ההתעסקות באיך רושמים חי ?
תשמעו את השיר במקום לחשוב אם רושמים hi או chai ...
חי = Chai וזהו ..

i love how she got 2nd place in Munich, where years before jews were massacred. i find this very symbolic and her song is truly amazing. Ofra Haza, you were beautiful, we miss you!

Bom 2º lugar. Depois do Luxemburgo esta foi a composição de que eu mais gostei. Óptima voz a da vocalista, bem secundada por uma coreografia simples mas bem executada.

CHAI means Life in hebrew alive is not the right translation
YankeesDodgerssfan13 3 years ago
actually chai mean alive\living while chaim means life. for example lechaim means 'for life'.

I Study hebrew and Chai means life
LeChaim (לחיים)
means "to life" Le means to Chiam is life but im not that so good with hebrew so if ur right ur right
YankeesDodgerssfan13 3 years ago
and i am israeli and hebrew is my daily language, chai means alive, אני חי. but in the end hebrew is a semetic language and english isnt so translations are never 100% accurate. its best to use it in context of the song, she say chaix3 ken ani od chai which as a sentence means 'alive x3 yes, i am still alive'

Part 3:
Listen my Brothers!
I still alive
and my eyes still look for the light
so all my brothers everywhere
and to my sons that ask to return
so I ask and pray
It's good we didn't lose hope.
