I remember this, was 13 at the time. I've been to this venue many times. Really cool place in downtown Alb, but some tragic shit that happened there that should've been prevented. This was a huge deal that summer, but sunshine regained it's reputation. It is a shame that life should be given to monsters. Albuquerque and Sunshine theater are beautiful places.
EnokTheKing i will never stand up for abq. we have the second highest rate per capita in the country. Shit happens everywhere but the 505 has a contorted image of what reality is
Burque is one of the coolest cities there is.. I've been to this place multiple time. THey search you just short of a cavity search, and it was there own employee who killed the girl. It is really a terrible thing but i'm glad to say sunshine theater is still successful today.
So sorry to all those who had to deal with her death, all those hurt by this happening. I cry as I hear this. Too many babies have been stolen from their lives, our lives... I am so sorry that from past to now that safety in the world , from one person to another has decreased so significantly... That we decide to hurt purposely. I'm so sorry.
this one hits home, hard. and those of you saying you don't want to go to that place, trust and believe it happens everywhere, to A LOT of people. I know more girls that have been sexually harrassed that havent. Although it may not be as severe as this event, don't doubt that it can happen to you, or your sister... but you should pray to god that it doesnt.
People need to shut the hell up about how "terrible" ABQ is...you probably don't even live here. ABQ is a great place, and this could've happened ANYWHERE. ABQ and NM in general support their music and their favorite artists proudly and ABQ doesn't need all the hate just because of the actions of ONE person. Obviously Slug and Ant like Albuquerque cuz they came back after this happened...
@yepoksure Lol? What is underground to you? Not having any followers? He still doesn't do mainstream music, still has sick lyrics instead of just rapping the same sentence a whole 5minutes about dumb shit that'll get stuck in your head but doesnt mean anything, he still isn't the guy you are gonna see on tv all the time, still represents as much as he did when he started... You should reconsider what you just said seriously
@blobbilly First of all, don't take it so seriously. Second, Atmosphere created their own music label that is recognized across the nation. That's not particularly underground. I don't know anyone who doesn't know who Atmosphere is. And if you find me a definition that says Mainstream is always bad, let me know. But for real, they became mainstream with the release of "When Life Gives you Lemons you Paint that Shit Gold". Atmosphere is awesome, and they are mainstream.
My best friend died last summer. And this song randomly came up on my Ipod the day she died. Before I even got the call. Worst day of my life and yet this song is still my favorite. R.i.p all those who died too young.
Are you guys really arguing on a memorial song of a inoccent dead girl that is a new deffinition of fucked upmessage each other and fight dont do it here
I remember the day I looked up wht this song was about and crying because of it. Slug you are forever great for forever remembering this woman through song. Thank you so much for that R.I.P.
This girl, Marissa was my older sister's best friend. I was only 6 or 7 when it happened, but I remember her, she was so sweet, she was a wildchild. I will never forget the day my sister got that call, she was tickling me and then she got that call saying they had found her. She just went silent and then cried and cried. My sister still has a picture of you and a bracelet you made her safely on that shelf.
Dont look down on Albuquerque because of what happened. Atmosphere was very thought full about righting a song in her memory, so that she will never be forgotten. I have live in ABQ my hole life and it scares me shit less thinking about what her family went through. What emmakaea said down there VVV, was spot on. im not going to just sit here and have u ppl hate on my home town!
damn this is fucking sad, poor girl rip. i think thats sweet of slug to create something that her friends and family can listen to, which is also her favorite kind of music..
@emmakaea..he wal talking about Subway, you know, the restaurant...did the sandwich comment go too far over your head?
And to all the ABQ haters out there... this kind of sick shit happens in every city, every country,everyday...it's just plain stupid to label one city/state a bad place based on one tragic event...slug praised albuquerque at his last show there, which showed alot of respect for the city regardless of the tragic events this song describes. This is an amazing song, beautifully writte
Those who are saying stay away from Albuquerque, that has nothing to do with this horrible accident. I've grown up in Albuquerque and you have no right to put a stereotype on where we live. Something like this could have happened anywhere at anytime. Its tragic and of course no one wants to believe this really happens, but it does. And the state has nothing to do with it. Even thinking something this sad happened here scares the shit out of me, knowing there are such sick people out there.
@MOTIVEONER not to take away from the message here, but after reading a few articles on the event it seems that Akers (the killer) was a janitor. He told Marissa he would take her backstage to meet Slug, and then 'it' happened. Tragic :(
Fuck all of you arrogant idiots that say NM is a bad plac, this shit happens everywhere, yeah it's tragic but new mexico and albuquerque had nothing to do with it. Albuquerque stand up. 505.
NM has alot of bullshit in it just yesterday a subway was robbed in broad daylight and two of the workers shot!!! its a subway what kinda score you gonna find in sandwichs!!
ABQ is home to fucked up shit like this but it doesn't necessarily represent NM. That piece of shit will be killed in prison if it means anything to anyone.
the sunshine has had shit go down for years.. abq is crazy outchear im tellin u people don knw.. wen slug comes down again everyone should go and this song should be the last 1
@fartedjustnow123 They did an interview with Slug and he said he would never be able to do this song live because it still gives him that horrible feeling inside.
this has been my favorite slug tune for a few years now...and yes i know the backstory...i cant help but feel regret as to the circumstances that led us here...but i extend my deepest condolences to the family...god bless
"..don`t know what i`m trying to write, but there`s a part of me that keeps dying that night" ! eternal respect for writing this lyric!! rappers with heart is not common theese days.
this song almost made me cry, remind me of the girl from work that i kinda like, she and her dad lost their apartment, i really wish that i could help them finantually but im 17 wtf can i do. = /
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
idk why everyone thinks this song is so amazing... in reality the lyrics suck and the only reason people think they are deep and amazing is because they let their emotions about a raped/murdered girl blind them to how bad this song really is.
@abominablegayguy You mus be a ruthless fucking idiot. This song is truly amazing and what music really is... it brings out the emotions in people and the lyrics that slug writes can relate to anyone ! how about you grow a fucking heart and really listen to what comes out of slugs mouth.
@abominablegayguy What bomb ass lyrics would you write if you were in his shoes? Death is a touchy subject especially being he didn't know this girl or her family personally. I don't think he was aiming for song of the year when he wrote this..
@abominablegayguy Please stop flaming. If you can't stop out of respect for the song or the artist, stop out of respect for the girl who was murdered. Thanks
@abominablegayguy Did you ever stop and considder for once that Atmosphere would do a song that isnt about lyracism? oh... and lets see you write a song that tops this?
and frankly your opinon sucks, there is nothing wrong with this song lyrically.
@abominablegayguy Idk man, yeah there's alot of emotion this song imposes but i don't thin the lyrics are bad, at all. He's got emotion in em, something alot of artists lack these days, its not supposed to be about good rhymes and metaphors, this song encompasses his style and its consistent. overall thats what makes it a good song. Slug's a good mc. Keep it goin man, be prayin for you and her family
You listen to Slug enough and if you relate close enough, you realize that he's got enough demons as it was.. Enough struggles and thoughts to keep his head hurting for a lifetime... Then you hear this song.. I feel terrible for that family, and for Sluggo. Like he didn't have enough on his plate already. I doubt he'll ever be over it.. Damn. I can only imagine that girl was there cuz she related too. Fucked up beyond words.
@TrendyInGreen This coming from someone with "Trendy" as their name. Lame. I love Atmosphere and love their passion but you did make a weak comparison.
@TrendyInGreen Its sad but true. Its because they have people telling them what to write to stay on top. People listen to them for dance music and cool catchy beats. They dont listen for deeper meaning.
It is the job of an artist to evoke emotion in the people who view the art. All art is controversial (as should it be) and people will take from it what they may. To say that the people who sympathize and feel what the artist is trying to express (the pain, greif, blame and sorrow) should not be faulted for this. Sure, shit like this happens all the time, but to feel bad for one particular case doesn't make you biased or callous, so anyone who has been spitting that shit can fuck right off.
This pisses me off so bad. Pieces of shit like the guy who did this should get the death penalty, no questions asked. You think of all concerts to go to an Atmosphere concert would have been among some of the safest, seeing the lyrical content and who they connect with.
We couldn't care for everyone, that would hurt to much. imagine the pain you feel when someone you know dies, or even just the shock you feel when you hear a story like this. now imagine that pain for anyone you just heard about dieing... our minds couldn't stand it. i agree that it is screwed up that we don't care as much for those without names as well as realizing that we couldn't.
i would like to inform my friend isaac wildenstein went to atmospheres concert again in albuquerque right after the concert a kid hit and killed my friend and ran away......................fuck!!!!!!! new mexico were bad luck dont come here
The girl died. It was tragic, no one wanted this to happen. But, people die all the time. Worse ways than this. And do any of you give a shit? But when Slug [love the music, all due respect.] comes out with one song that is about someone dying at HIS concert you start sympathizing. This has nothing to do with my view on atmosphere, personally I think they're a great team. But I just think it's fucking wrong that you people only care about someone who dies when Slug tells the story.
well to be honest many people didnt even know about what dominic akers did in the first place so you can't blame many of them i do agree with you somewhat but you cant just make a generalization like that many ppl did care outside her friends family and slug
So if someone you know dies. Nobody tells you so you don't feel bad. But then you here about them dieing 2 years later on some radio station or something. Does that mean you only care about that person dieing because the radio station told you the story?
Genius. She was 16, raped and killed, stuffed in a hole in a wall and he pushed a coke machine infront of it. She died a horrid and painful death.. IDIOT!!!
This just goes to show that Slug is a genuine person who deserves respect. How many other hip-hop artists would take the time and effort to do this for someone who died at their show? I havent heard of any...
Marissa Was one of my sister's really good friends, she was there that night. i remember the day we got the call. i didn't know that atmosphere wrote a song for her. that's amazing, that's really thoughtful.
wow, strange. I hadnt heard this song for a long time and yesterday I just couldnt stop listening to it and getting angry/sad. She would have been 21 yesterday. Fuck this song is so moving. Great montage.... are any of the pics actually her?
i remember this, it happened in Albuquerque NM, at the Sunshine theatre, the manager of the place hired a bunch of unknown fools to guard the place, and 2 of them happened to be sex offenders! at the end of the show the two men pulled Marissa to the back, raped her and killed her! The sunshine theatre was always fucking ghetto, they should close the place down, its too small and alot of shit has gone down there! R.I.P. Marissa! this song is sad but ill!
Before i even understood what he was rappin about, this song stood out as one of my favorites from that album. Then after a few more listens i understood and the reason to why i liked it made complete sense, but at the same time it made me feel completely dark. I wish her friends and family the best.
Having that happen on a concert must be hell, as an artist. Good thing Slug made the song. One.
As much as I truly want to believe and support your statement, I cannot. There are ALWAYS shades of gray, and some may benefit from treatment. Their acts are horrible, but a blanket capital punishment policy will in some cases do much more harm than good, especially when one considers the leagues of falsely convicted individuals. Those responsible should certainly receive swift retribution, but I cannot condone capital punishment when there is even the slightest chance of a mistake.
Swift retribution, I would prefer we drop them off above the arctic circle, somewhere in the Yukon where their chances of survival are limited. Instead of feeding them, feed them to the animals.

Ya real disgusting to care for someone.
LOCCZCARDZ 2 years ago
The girl died. It was tragic, no one wanted this to happen. But, people die all the time. Worse ways than this. And do any of you give a shit? But when Slug [love the music, all due respect.] comes out with one song that is about someone dying at HIS concert you start sympathizing. This has nothing to do with my view on atmosphere, personally I think they're a great team. But I just think it's fucking wrong that you people only care about someone who dies when Slug tells the story.
suicidesayer2 2 years ago
well to be honest many people didnt even know about what dominic akers did in the first place so you can't blame many of them i do agree with you somewhat but you cant just make a generalization like that many ppl did care outside her friends family and slug
KaptainBlazinV 2 years ago
So if someone you know dies. Nobody tells you so you don't feel bad. But then you here about them dieing 2 years later on some radio station or something. Does that mean you only care about that person dieing because the radio station told you the story?

Genius. She was 16, raped and killed, stuffed in a hole in a wall and he pushed a coke machine infront of it. She died a horrid and painful death.. IDIOT!!!

So fucked up what happened, good song but so hard to listen to. They say song/music is a form of therapy so who can blame Slug.
NonPhixion1987 2 years ago
This just goes to show that Slug is a genuine person who deserves respect. How many other hip-hop artists would take the time and effort to do this for someone who died at their show? I havent heard of any...

Damn this song is deep! So great of him to write a song about this. I hope the guy who did this burns forever in hell.

i remember this, it happened in Albuquerque NM, at the Sunshine theatre, the manager of the place hired a bunch of unknown fools to guard the place, and 2 of them happened to be sex offenders! at the end of the show the two men pulled Marissa to the back, raped her and killed her! The sunshine theatre was always fucking ghetto, they should close the place down, its too small and alot of shit has gone down there! R.I.P. Marissa! this song is sad but ill!

Good video!
One.

I get alot of weird looks from people when I tell them without shame that rape should be a capital offense but stories like this confirm my beliefs.
You can't reform a sex offender. Once an offender, always a threat. For society's safety they need to be done away with.
NOCDIB 3 years ago 3
in english you mean.........??
1thisisme23 3 years ago
he means sex offenders should be killed because they will rape agian....
volcomben675 3 years ago 2
fuck yeah. rapists are sick sons of bitches and if cops wont take care of them do it yourself.
creepincaddiesnbenzs 3 years ago 7
As much as I truly want to believe and support your statement, I cannot. There are ALWAYS shades of gray, and some may benefit from treatment. Their acts are horrible, but a blanket capital punishment policy will in some cases do much more harm than good, especially when one considers the leagues of falsely convicted individuals. Those responsible should certainly receive swift retribution, but I cannot condone capital punishment when there is even the slightest chance of a mistake.
SBraisted 3 years ago 2
Swift retribution, I would prefer we drop them off above the arctic circle, somewhere in the Yukon where their chances of survival are limited. Instead of feeding them, feed them to the animals.
