Don't worry about sources, as there are plenty of them. The University of Connecticut as part of their Sea Grant research (which is a .edu) has explained the mystery of mercury poisoning in hatters thoroughly.

excellent documentary (as are all of Jim's), however, the piece about hatters going mad because they used mercury is a bit misleading. The reason why they became "mad as hatters" was because of syphillis. One of the key processes of treating felt was soaking or immersing it in urine, and as syphillis was prevealent at the time, hatters used to take quantities of mercury salts to prevent contraction of this disease through the constant handling of urine, leading to mercury-madness.

My friend and I watched the whole series - he loved it so much he watched all 3 shows at one sitting! My fav was part 2, there is a real beauty to science and the periodic table reminds me of the notes which make up music, and what beauty can be created from it. If it were not for the periodic table and chemistry (and many other sciences, most of us wouldn't be alive today, much less enjoying the lives we do. Thank you very much for posting this.
