I don't think it's meant to be racist. The song was written for a black woman with soul, Jennifer Holliday. That being said, it is very difficult for a lot of people familiar with the song and with Dreamgirls to see past the fact that the show is a very ethnic show.

Personally, although it bothers me to see someone who isn't black singing it, if they have the level of soul and the commitment to each note to pull the song off, more power to them.

big momma's house's voice is made for this kind of song.. i liked the versions of celine clone (overdid a bit, the remix is cool, showed versatility),bland spag (damn safe),nd bisaya (reached d high notes but her voice is not inclined to d song), but the version of the emerging 15 yr old filipina star who sang this recently in korea nd america (ellen degeneres) is still far more superior.. u all know who im talking about, hehe..
