Actually the lesson that was learned was how shortsighted it was not to put Close In Weapons Systems CIWS on our ships, they existed at the time and the threat of sea skimming missiles was known, it was just cost cutting that backfired.
The new generation of RN ships are much heavier than those they replace as they have more self defence capability. e.g the Type 45 is nearly 8000t and replaces the Type 42 5400t

Actually yes they did. The British persauded the settlers who remained after the USS Lexington raid to stay and form part of a new British colony, Matthew Brisbane and William Dickson were the first two British governors of the islands and both of them came over with Luis Vernet.
Vernet himself had already left the islands with his family and slaves before the USS Lexington raid and never returned.
They are islands more than 480km from Argentina at the nearest. Port Stanley is 600km from Argentina.
The islands are an entity independent of south america. It doesn't matter if they are on the same continental shelf there is enough seperation to be independent and choose for themselves.

The Falklands were more about keeping the English presence in the region, allowing them to claim parts of Antarctica if needed be, which was bound to have a lot of minerals.

The responsability for the war is with the unelected military dictatorship that ruled Argentina which after having murdered 30000 of their own people and fucked up the economy was trying to create a distraction that would unite the Argentine people, they knew wars have unifying effect on a nation and that it silences dissent.
I am NO fan of Thatcher but I can't blame her for starting the war because she didn't and I believe any number of past PM's would have had to send the task force.

That's partly true but its only half the story.
Thatcher pulled Brit presence back around the world and especially in the Falklands / South Georgia & that was taken as a diplomatic 'signal' we don't want it you can have it but we can't say so. And why was the war so difficult - Thatcher's cut-backs depleted the forces. And now Blair and Brown are playing similar games. Its still corrupt.

One last point, the population of Argentina should thank the UK.
If UK had allowed the Junta to succeed in an act of war then it would have remained in power for several more years and perhaps another 30000 would have been murdered, perhaps they would try again in a few years with a war against Chile and thousands would die.
The Argentine people won when the Junta fell from power and the British victory enabled that to happen quickly rather than many years later.

The Falklands changed the face of war forever. The third world demonstrated the effectiveness of an ill equipped airforce, armed with nominally effective Exocet missiles, cast against British naval strength. No longer will an armada be an effective solution in isolated combat of this type. Had it not been for British resolve the losses might even have been greater. I hope the lessons of the Falklands will be far reaching.

Actually the lesson that was learned was how shortsighted it was not to put Close In Weapons Systems CIWS on our ships, they existed at the time and the threat of sea skimming missiles was known, it was just cost cutting that backfired.
The new generation of RN ships are much heavier than those they replace as they have more self defence capability. e.g the Type 45 is nearly 8000t and replaces the Type 42 5400t
The lesson was don't cut vital self defence systems and then go to war.

Actually yes they did. The British persauded the settlers who remained after the USS Lexington raid to stay and form part of a new British colony, Matthew Brisbane and William Dickson were the first two British governors of the islands and both of them came over with Luis Vernet.
Vernet himself had already left the islands with his family and slaves before the USS Lexington raid and never returned.

They are islands more than 480km from Argentina at the nearest. Port Stanley is 600km from Argentina.
The islands are an entity independent of south america. It doesn't matter if they are on the same continental shelf there is enough seperation to be independent and choose for themselves.
