@Bsblrook2 Great question, I wondered the same thing for a while. The interesting thing about QR codes is that about 30% of the original QR code can be altered, or even erased, and it will still be readable by smartphones.
However, that 30% can not include the large squares in the top left, top right, or bottom left. Smartphones need those squares to be able to recognize the QR code. - Mike
