THis is one of the most exciting races that I reamember, I was in high school and still reamember, unfortunately CART is complety forgotten from Mexico since those big changes in the category that screwed the competition, now CART is scrap, I hope it can regain its previous competitivity, because is it even more exciting than F1
this was a great finish but i dont think people realize how close it came to maybe one of the biggest wrecks ever. a crash that probably would have ended in the grandstands
@TheZadak Quicker on a road course, but the Champ Cars of that era were beasts in horsepower and aero. This is the era where the closed course speed record was broken. F1 cars are not "so much faster than these cars"
@TheZadak the current indycars are normally aspirated and make around 630 hp with a maximum rpm of 10,500 rpm. the amazing turbocharged champ cars in this video were running at 16,000 rpm and making around 900 hp depending on the amount of boost they were allowed at each track. in 2003 (i think, it may have been 2004) champ car switched over to cosworth engines that were limited to 12,000 rpm, and made around 750 hp depending on the allowed amount of boost.
Montoya just got bored of being out of the spotlight, and went where he felt wanted. He was a great F1 driver, just unfortunate to be on the tail end of the Schumi years.
man i remember seeing this race live, it's hard to believe it's been almost 10 years since. 2000 season in CART was an off year for Montoya compared to 99 but this victory was definitely the bright spot of that campaign.
I was standing up cheering in screaming the last 10 laps of this race. The stakes were so much higher then. These cars were fast and the racing was so exciting!
the cool thing about this, that it wasn't just two drivers running up front like that, swapping positions, it was also two different engines as well. that made it really cool, I love that lola/reynard chassis from 2000-2006, those things were fast, and close.
Well probably because NASCAR has more fans then indy does and the drivers can earn much more cash, but that's kinda it. I mean if I was a race car driver I'd probably know where would I like to compete in Stock cars or at open wheels so I wouldn't think about another league... Anyway It's just a bit weird isn't it?
NASCAR is the place to be because of the $. Try getting a sponsor in today's lame Indycar Series. The new Versus TV package is only available in 30% of US households and the ratings are horribly low. The crowds on race day are sometimes pretty poor, not all the time, but most races. If it wasn't for Tony George, NASCAR wouldn't be what it is today and CART would still rule, the way it should be.
yeah. IRL is not as good as Champ Car was. absolutely not!... what a shame, I really miss Champ Car or CART. very sad :( ... indeed great victory, well done montoya!
Yeah many people does except those who lives in Michigan. Cause for past few years when IRL was racing in MIS (Michigan Int'l speedway) there were no crowd. Thousands of empty seats...
p.s. i've seen paul page call all kinds of stuff, including snowmobiles! i think he and gary gerould were a much better crew for indy cars, more knowledgeable, relevant and passionate, i really miss those guys. maybe as the unified series continues to grow they will look to bring them back, or at least some people of equal caliber.
great driving there, it's nice to see real pros mixing it up without taking each other out of the race. you just don't see that kind of drafting and aerodynamic performance when wheel to wheel in the IRL junk cars. nobody can slingshot like that without the turbo! on top of that there appeared to be no drop in performance while they were side by side, and it was like that on just about every other track, not so today... time to redesign these fuckin cars indy racing league!
I KNEW that but the reason why he is doing NHRA because ESPN has screwed itself time after time and announcers have been switched just to make whats his name (ESPN CEO) happy!
The lead changed hands 5 TIMES in the last lap! Montoya became the first driver since Rick Mears in 1991 to win the Indy 500 and Michigan 500 in the same year.
Parker Johnstone sounds like Bob Varsha, doesn't he?
Yep; Paul Page called the race with former driver Parker Johnstone, who most notably set a new track record here at MIS in 1995 in his first attempt at an oval track race. He also finished 2nd the following year at Long Beach, avoiding the high attrition and beating lead lap finishers like Al Unser Jr. and Paul Tracy.
Fantastic racing, thanks. JPM is one of our all time fave drivers. We first saw him in F3000 where he excelled. In F1 he was always fun but we are worried we won't be able to watch the Nascar series over here in UK. We get Busch but he's not going to that one. Let's hope YT comes to the rescue!
Dude, you know that always NASCAR forgets about Indy guys. If Wheldon, Allmendiger or Hornish trespass to NASCAR, they will ask "who the hell are these guys?"
Allmendinger is a NASCAR driver now and so is JPM. Hornish also tested in NASCAR for DEI a few years ago and sometimes they do talk about Wheldon and other Indy winners. Whenever these guys are in NASCAR now they always talk about their open-wheel stuff. Just like they always used to talk about Tony Stewart and Robby Gordon and how well they did and they have been around for years.
Indeed, racing on streets and road-courses only will damage the sport. I had a bad feeling that CCWS will fail the tradition of CART if they keep adding in road-racing like this, when IRL started to diversify their series.
I see this before from IceBudweiser but in EUROSPORT channel and ESPN International. I used to like the old red scoring building sitting aside the start/finish line. Now the newly rennovated blue (I say ridiculous) building ruined the beauty of MIS. JPM nice racing with Andretti...

You're correct, though. Indy is it's own deal, and for some reason, drivers seem to think NASCAR is the place to be, when that isn't the case at all.
