  • The earl can't hold a candle to Cart even now

  • euro sports commentary was more exciting

  • THis is one of the most exciting races that I reamember, I was in high school and still reamember, unfortunately CART is complety forgotten from Mexico since those big changes in the category that screwed the competition, now CART is scrap, I hope it can regain its previous competitivity, because is it even more exciting than F1

  • Great pilot montoya!

  • T_T greater memories!!

  • If Murray Walker commentated this epic finish, he gonna be NUTS!!!!!!

  • Best finish in CART history

  • good times....

  • Those people got their friggin' money's worth!

  • @amjan You're joking, right?

  • @bgcatfan Hehe LOL, I must've been quoting someone.

  • @amjan =) haha ok. Just checking.

  • tony "shit" george

  • So many empty seats.

  • this was a great finish but i dont think people realize how close it came to maybe one of the biggest wrecks ever. a crash that probably would have ended in the grandstands

  • The british comentary was WAY better

  • @47ambrose42jpm Ben Edwards was having an organism on the last lap. he is way better, BBC replace Legard with edwards. Edwards and Brundle

  • JPM is the man

  • Now thats proper racing right there. F1 take note!

  • F1 should do an oval, they are so much faster than these cars, it would be awesome.

  • @TheZadak Quicker on a road course, but the Champ Cars of that era were beasts in horsepower and aero. This is the era where the closed course speed record was broken. F1 cars are not "so much faster than these cars"

  • @rantanamo how much power do / did they have?

I don't watch indycar or champ car that much

  • @TheZadak the current indycars are normally aspirated and make around 630 hp with a maximum rpm of 10,500 rpm. the amazing turbocharged champ cars in this video were running at 16,000 rpm and making around 900 hp depending on the amount of boost they were allowed at each track. in 2003 (i think, it may have been 2004) champ car switched over to cosworth engines that were limited to 12,000 rpm, and made around 750 hp depending on the allowed amount of boost.

  • @Grayqboufan thank you!

  • they need to bring back that draft, this stuff were their all bunched up is bullshit...

  • Paul Page is a great commentator. The IRL would do well to get him back in the booth!

    Great vid BTW!

  • Wish Montoya would go to IRL instead of wasting his time in NASCAR.

  • The best race EVER!!!

  • Stupid Tony George, and the CART owners to, greedy bastards.

  • Indeed. What a finish! Thanks for uploading this!

  • Bollocks.

Montoya just got bored of being out of the spotlight, and went where he felt wanted. He was a great F1 driver, just unfortunate to be on the tail end of the Schumi years.

  • man i remember seeing this race live, it's hard to believe it's been almost 10 years since. 2000 season in CART was an off year for Montoya compared to 99 but this victory was definitely the bright spot of that campaign.

  • I was standing up cheering in screaming the last 10 laps of this race. The stakes were so much higher then. These cars were fast and the racing was so exciting!

  • Michael knew that Montoya would winn ,if he gets behind Marques, that`s why Michael tried to bump Montoya.

A very nice race with alot of action!

  • JUST FANTASTIC!!!

montoya en la cary era sencillamente fabulosos. sorprendentemente espectacular. lo mejor de lo mejor.

    VIVA JP MONTOYA!!!

  • why Tony George ? you destroy the open wheel racing in america.

  • I know! this is what real open wheel racing on an super speedway is supposed to look like and sound like!!! not what we have now!

  • @illhnar i know, what a douche. i know it's all back together now, but just something in me can't stand watching a series with the name irl on it.

  • @illhnar Chimp Car team owners destroy the ow racing in america not TG :)

  • the cool thing about this, that it wasn't just two drivers running up front like that, swapping positions, it was also two different engines as well. that made it really cool, I love that lola/reynard chassis from 2000-2006, those things were fast, and close.

  • 500 mile races at MIS were CLASSIC!!!

  • I wish the brought Cart back, it was so good, cool, hot, sexy, gorgeous, etc, etc, etc

  • Used IMPROPERLY, that is. IndyCar is not, never has been, and never will be a "stepping stone" to NA$CAR!

  • HAHA NA$CAR.

    Original.

You're correct, though. Indy is it's own deal, and for some reason, drivers seem to think NASCAR is the place to be, when that isn't the case at all.

  • Well probably because NASCAR has more fans then indy does and the drivers can earn much more cash, but that's kinda it. I mean if I was a race car driver I'd probably know where would I like to compete in Stock cars or at open wheels so I wouldn't think about another league... Anyway It's just a bit weird isn't it?

  • NASCAR is the place to be because of the $. Try getting a sponsor in today's lame Indycar Series. The new Versus TV package is only available in 30% of US households and the ratings are horribly low. The crowds on race day are sometimes pretty poor, not all the time, but most races. If it wasn't for Tony George, NASCAR wouldn't be what it is today and CART would still rule, the way it should be.

  • yeah. IRL is not as good as Champ Car was. absolutely not!... what a shame, I really miss Champ Car or CART. very sad :( ... indeed great victory, well done montoya!

  • Comment removed

  • That is the coolest thing with Montoya and Andretti running side by side through the fourth turn on the final lap!

  • Those were the days...wish they can come back!!

  • montoya owns all, sucks that they mest up indy.

  • And people wonder why people miss this series so much

  • great memories, best race

  • Now that's exciting OR WHAT? :)

  • Yeah many people does except those who lives in Michigan. Cause for past few years when IRL was racing in MIS (Michigan Int'l speedway) there were no crowd. Thousands of empty seats...

  • There were thousands upon thousands of empty seats in this video as well when they had the helicopter shot.

  • thats because they only sell tickets for the main grandstand in these races so of corse there gonna be empty

  • p.s. i've seen paul page call all kinds of stuff, including snowmobiles! i think he and gary gerould were a much better crew for indy cars, more knowledgeable, relevant and passionate, i really miss those guys. maybe as the unified series continues to grow they will look to bring them back, or at least some people of equal caliber.

  • great driving there, it's nice to see real pros mixing it up without taking each other out of the race. you just don't see that kind of drafting and aerodynamic performance when wheel to wheel in the IRL junk cars. nobody can slingshot like that without the turbo! on top of that there appeared to be no drop in performance while they were side by side, and it was like that on just about every other track, not so today... time to redesign these fuckin cars indy racing league!

  • fantastic race!

  • Very exciting, but maybe TOO much passing with the hanford device.

  • How does Hanford device works?

  • Ahh, what a great battle, and a great finish. I remember catching the tail end of this race on tv, and it was a blast to watch. Great stuff!

Does anyone know what that song/theme is at the end of the video?

  • I've got the 2001 race uploaded in it's entirety. I thought the final 500 mile race at Michigan was pretty special.

  • I'm not familiar with NHRA but isn't Marty Reid used to cover that? Why did they had to switch places with Paul Page?

  • IDK; it doesn't make any sense.

I miss Paul. I'm sure he misses calling the IndyCar races.

  • It still makes no sense everytime I see either this or a California race why CART wanted to abandon ovals. The racing was always close!

  • Go GO Go.

  • Paul Page also does the announcing for the Coney Island Hot Dog eating contest for ESPN :) LOL

  • Not to mention he does commentary for the X Games for anything with a motor, and involves racing.

  • Yep and why he isn't doing IRL or ChampCar these days got me beat. Another victim of ESPN narrow-minded calls!

  • The reason Paul Page doesn't do IRL or Champ Car now is because he does the NHRA on ESPN now

  • I KNEW that but the reason why he is doing NHRA because ESPN has screwed itself time after time and announcers have been switched just to make whats his name (ESPN CEO) happy!

  • The lead changed hands 5 TIMES in the last lap! Montoya became the first driver since Rick Mears in 1991 to win the Indy 500 and Michigan 500 in the same year.

Parker Johnstone sounds like Bob Varsha, doesn't he?

  • Yep; Paul Page called the race with former driver Parker Johnstone, who most notably set a new track record here at MIS in 1995 in his first attempt at an oval track race. He also finished 2nd the following year at Long Beach, avoiding the high attrition and beating lead lap finishers like Al Unser Jr. and Paul Tracy.

  • Wheldon turned down a Move to the BMW Sauber F1 team this year. But insisted he wanted to race in Formula 1 before the end of his career.

  • But it was only Testing not Racing. So its obvious why he turned it down.. that is if you call IRL racing.. in which its not.

  • why not?

  • man do i miss the good old days of CART and turbo charged cars with drivers that were actually good

i hate tony george for ruining everything!!!!!!!!

  • NO abrá nunca una mejor carrera !!!

  • Que carreron y obviamente feliz porque gano montoya ese dia...el final estuvo de infarto,,,,

  • Were u did i need one but i cant find it in canada

    how you pay for it.

  • Ahh, ChampCar (or CART for me), back when it doesn't suck.

  • Fantastic racing, thanks. JPM is one of our all time fave drivers. We first saw him in F3000 where he excelled. In F1 he was always fun but we are worried we won't be able to watch the Nascar series over here in UK. We get Busch but he's not going to that one. Let's hope YT comes to the rescue!

  • Dude, you know that always NASCAR forgets about Indy guys. If Wheldon, Allmendiger or Hornish trespass to NASCAR, they will ask "who the hell are these guys?"

  • Allmendinger is a NASCAR driver now and so is JPM. Hornish also tested in NASCAR for DEI a few years ago and sometimes they do talk about Wheldon and other Indy winners. Whenever these guys are in NASCAR now they always talk about their open-wheel stuff. Just like they always used to talk about Tony Stewart and Robby Gordon and how well they did and they have been around for years.

  • Wheldon is going to formula 1

  • Dan Wheldon is not even worthy enough to be Sakon Yamamoto towel boy, let alone race in a top tier racing series like F1.

  • Suckon Yamamoto isn't deserving of a towel boy.

    Or of an F1 drive.

  • Do you know there are NASCAR-heads who actually question whether Juan "Formula One" Montoya can race on ovals?

  • It's not about wether or not he can race on ovals. It's about wether or not he can race sedans after spending a career in open wheel.

  • This is why Champ Car needs oval racing.

  • Indeed, racing on streets and road-courses only will damage the sport. I had a bad feeling that CCWS will fail the tradition of CART if they keep adding in road-racing like this, when IRL started to diversify their series.

  • I hope for some ovals in CC's near future as well.

  • Wow...

  • I see this before from IceBudweiser but in EUROSPORT channel and ESPN International. I used to like the old red scoring building sitting aside the start/finish line. Now the newly rennovated blue (I say ridiculous) building ruined the beauty of MIS. JPM nice racing with Andretti...
