I was mesmerized when I saw this kind of line up, and Bowie in Berlin Waldbuhne late 80s. A mid summer evening with a huge red sun going down behind the stage to among other songs Space Oddity and Heroes.. Fanzastic musicians, and sound . Probably the best live show I´ve seen. There is a version German language which sounds very good to me. German suits the song
I saw Bowie in Serious Moonlight Tour and Heroes stood out as a classic and after all these years it's now imortilised in rock history, So many people have covered it but no one can our do Bowie.
This was Bowie cashing in, selling out, a little too mainstream. Saw this tour in Syracuse, but a little too prepackaged with the upc in plain sight, designed for the family living room. Compare the original album cut to the Serious Moonlight tour. Probably trying to save his voice for the rest of the road ahead. And I can't blame him for pacing himself with this crowd pleaser. But the biggest disappointment was the absence of "1984" which would have killed his voice but have been so apt in 83'.
I saw David Bowie live, only once, in 1977 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Amazing. I was in my total Bowie Worship period then, and he could do NO wrong. I arrived a bit late, and was looking for my seat when the overture to Heroes started playing. I came out into the section opening, and the lights had just gone up on the stage .. and the King began singing. The crowd was totally enthralled. .. ah, memories. That's a long time ago, and time has marched on. This clip brings it all back.
Never hearded a cover that would be better than the original. So many like that song so much that they want to cover it, but noone has been able to make it sound the same nor better than the original. Some songs simply are unbeatable in greatness.
I saw Bowie on this tour and when he intro'd "Heroes" with Sammy Turner's "Lavender Blue", my jaw dropped. It was my childhood favorite and maybe his too.
Not only is this the best song ever, it is also the best - and original - version of it. We saw him perform this at Wembley Arena on the Serius Moonlight tour. The 'Lavender blue, lavender green ..' intro was awesome; still sends a tingle down my spine.
ALL done before over-dubbing, video overlay, ghost images and super animation! See what happens when your only offering is pure TALENT? And then came Dancing With The Stars (Republicreeps)! Add up 20 entertainers from today and the total would still have less talent than Bowie in this era of music and modern day boredom. Almost 5 minutes and not a single "F" word surely something is wrong here! GR8 clip from an amazing time period. Awesome upload!
On behalf of the human race I apolgise, oh great lord Bowie, for the fuck-wit factor's version of this song. I hope it has not caused you too much distress ;'(
God the way Earl makes that guitar sing... combined with Bowie's amazing ability to surround himself with such pure talent. This version of the song blows me away every time I hear it.
Bowie, the ultimate performer, I was @ the Serious Moonlight tour, can't remember the exact date I want to say '82, '83 or so at Angel Stadium in Anaheim Ca. the guy was awesome, love his music going back to Spiders from Mars days.
@hippiesrule2468 Me too Hippie, Travelled down from the West Coast of Scotland to Milton Keynes in England to see him on the Serious Moonlight Tour, went twice in the end. Brilliant! Was definitely 1983 >:0)
Here he looks as high as a cat's whiskers :))), those of you who have watched the ellen interview know what I'm talking about [I absitively love that one, he's so funny]. Unbelievable singing and stage presence, however, personally, I prefer his latest, I'm-off-the-drugs-and-an-accomplished-mature-artist shows, where he's so much more down to earth and himself. Bowie = pure class and he has a lovely, self-irony based sense of humour, which is so rare these days :)
this was`nt written, it came from the Gods, they just picked Sir David to sing it, I think he done a fine job! watcha say! we can be heroes just for 1 day? we can beat them wotta ya say? we can be heroes, we can be heroes!
@bartholomew313 i honestly think the band used in the glass spiders tour is better than this one with peter frampton on guitar and most of the same people he used on the glass spider tour and of course the dancers to make it a visual spectacle as well
@svenpenie I totally disagree! The Seriously Moonlight band rocked! Tony Thompson on Drums, Carlos Alomar (actually he was in both bands) Lenny Pickett from TOP and Earl Slick on guitar . Stevie Ray is a great player, But Earl Slick has a much stronger resume, although with less fame. He is one of the monster players of our time. I love Frampton also, so its no knock on him. Spectacle has nothing to do with musical quality or integrity. I was at these shows in New York.
Pezzi come Heroes, Life On Mars, Space Oddity, Starman, Ziggy Stardust, Five Years, TVC15, Warszawa, Sens of Doubt, Ashes to ashes... sono pietre miliari.
Honor and long life to White Duke! Thank you David!
I saw this tour in '83 in Oakland CA, I believe the Tubes were the opening act. DB was amazing, a true professional and Earl Slick was great, running around stage with the energy of sugared up six year old...I also saw the Police about a week prior to this show at the same stadium...'83 was a good year for concerts.
Crummydriver, I also got to see this tour at the Richfield Coliseum in Ohio and it was awesome. I alos was lucky enough to see Stevie Ray at Akron U before his death and the Fab Thunderbirds opened.
Does anyone remember that Stevie Ray Vaughan was originally slated to play lead guitar on this tour before backing out? That would have been a great addition. I remember seeing Bowie on this tour in '83 at the Tacoma Dome, one of my favorite concerts. A true genius.
Lavender Blue was re-written around 1949 and hit for several artists. The last and biggest hit version came from Sammy Turner in 1959. I suspect that Bowie was inspired to write Heroes later in life after hearing Lavender Blue during his childhood.
Well, that's not true. It's just that the most popular artist these days don't have much talent in my opinion. How many Danzig songs do you hear on the radio (except for Mother). Danzig is an all-time great in my opinion. How many Ben Harper songs do you hear?
This is my favorite Bowie song. I saw the concert and was quite surprised when he opened Heroes with lines from Lavender Blue (my childhood favorite)(Sammy Turner). Perhaps he was inspired to write Heroes by that song since the first line is the same.

Oh how much I love that song! On the serious moonlight tour David vocally was absolutely amazing! Such a voice! You can always recognize him out of a million voices!
I have heard loads of versions of this song and this one really shows Earl Slick as a fantastic lead player. No wonder Bowie picked him. From 2:05 to 2:13 Earl really makes this song special with his lead. BV's also good.
My first date with the girl who would become my wife was to see Bowie on the Serious Moonlight tour at the LA Forum. We'll be married 23 years this September.
He's soo .... much. There is nothing like Bowie. He's a true legend, and I can't stand the fact that there are people who doesn't even know the name!!!
my friend did not no who david bowie was and i showed her and she does not like him and i sed what is there not to like abou david bowie he is so aewsome
WOW! I was at that concert and it "blew me away"! NO ONE can be better than BOWIE! Also, saw him at the Beacon Theatre in NYC. Another excellent concert but even better in a small theatre. Love You Bowie. My 17 yr. old cat's name is Ziggy (well hung and snow white tan)!!!
I recommend every Bowie fan to buy this DVD. I have it and you feel like your at the actual concert, its totally cool! Earl Slick looks kinda like johnny depp from 21 jumpstreet here, or is that just me???

I have heard loads of versions of this song and this one really shows Earl Slick as a fantastic lead player. No wonder Bowie picked him. From 2:05 to 2:13 Earl really makes this song special with his lead. BV's also good.

My first date with the girl who would become my wife was to see Bowie on the Serious Moonlight tour at the LA Forum. We'll be married 23 years this September.
Thank you so much for posting this.
