Having listened to all the versions I think Gene's is the best. The song so suited his strong unique voice. I was a fan from a very young age and first managed to see him when I was 18 and went to various venues in the East Mdlands and been looking forward to seeing him at Buxton on that final tour. Another song where he used the power of his voice to the fulll was 'street called hope' it really should have done better in the UK sports than it did.
We're doing a documentary on Buck Ram and are looking for the best recordings of "The Great Pretender." This is one of them. Roy Clarke does the funniest/best. There are some really bad ones out there.
I worked with Gene as support artist in the early 70s, in one of his concerts at a place called "The Golden Garter" in Whythenshaw Manchestr England, he was the most lovely man, a few weeks later I worked with Roy Orbison at the same venue, them were the days of Great Cabaret artists and music. God Bless Them.
Ok but not the same as the Platters the orginal verson. They were one of the big groups of the 50's and they entertained me and Lynda with all their songs. Yep first love make everything better especially the music!
I,ve always cried when I hear Pitney do this song. The Pain in his voice vibrates out to say how hard it is to pretend when you are feeling so strongly about someone or thing.
Really a nice version of the Platters masterpiece. I rank The Great Pretender and it is (only my opinion) as one of the Greatest 25 Rock and Roll songs of all time. My own 25 may differ from the Radio surveys, etc. but it was hard to number them.
What about this song makes you think it could ever fall into that category???
Surely, it is a ballad. It happened to have reached its peak during the early 'rock and roll' era. But that's as close as it gets to being 'rock and roll'.
muy buena version en la voz de pitney

This is my favourite singer of this song. Absolutely brilliant!.
Roy Orbison and Freddie Mercury are pretty close with their versions.

Really? I'll bet Gene was surprised, because he was still alive! he didn't die until April 2006.
By the way, big memorial concert and ceremony to be held in Connecticut, October 4, 2008. See Pitney forums and web site for more details.
Pitney impersonator Tony Lee from UK to perform.
