  • muy buena version en la voz de pitney

  • The Platters version the original is still the best the rest are so impressed of the song they had to cover it.

  • no one can beat Gene especially in terms of voice

  • this a great song by gene , my favourite version of this song

  • this is the best version of this song , as a gene pitney fan this is the one and only ,,, thanks for posting .

  • Having listened to all the versions I think Gene's is the best. The song so suited his strong unique voice. I was a fan from a very young age and first managed to see him when I was 18 and went to various venues in the East Mdlands and been looking forward to seeing him at Buxton on that final tour. Another song where he used the power of his voice to the fulll was 'street called hope' it really should have done better in the UK sports than it did.

  • @footyone1 me too i was booked to see him at Buxton i was devastated.

  • This is my favourite singer of this song. Absolutely brilliant!.

Roy Orbison and Freddie Mercury are pretty close with their versions.

  • We're doing a documentary on Buck Ram and are looking for the best recordings of "The Great Pretender." This is one of them. Roy Clarke does the funniest/best. There are some really bad ones out there.

  • I worked with Gene as support artist in the early 70s, in one of his concerts at a place called "The Golden Garter" in Whythenshaw Manchestr England, he was the most lovely man, a few weeks later I worked with Roy Orbison at the same venue, them were the days of Great Cabaret artists and music. God Bless Them.

  • Ok but not the same as the Platters the orginal verson. They were one of the big groups of the 50's and they entertained me and Lynda with all their songs. Yep first love make everything better especially the music!

  • ..some how i believe michael jackson TRIED to sound this good...!

  • Wonderful version! Thanks for posting.

  • I love this! Never really cared for this song, but Gene Pitney does this so beautifully, I just gotta love it now! And I do!!

  • Thank you - a beautiful rendition by Gene Pitney of a great song. Gene, rest in peace. Ron

  • That singular voice! Grate.

  • LEGEND!!

  • Good version, wonderful.

Gene Pitney, like many singers of these years, bring us beautiful moments.

Youtube search for ELVIS ROCK DISCO 45 and you will see an honoring to this one and others beautiful songs.

  • buono

  • gene pitney is the man very good

  • I,ve always cried when I hear Pitney do this song. The Pain in his voice vibrates out to say how hard it is to pretend when you are feeling so strongly about someone or thing.

LOVE IT <3 LOVE IT :)

  • Really a nice version of the Platters masterpiece. I rank The Great Pretender and it is (only my opinion) as one of the Greatest 25 Rock and Roll songs of all time. My own 25 may differ from the Radio surveys, etc. but it was hard to number them.

  • Ah...'rock and roll'????

What about this song makes you think it could ever fall into that category???

Surely, it is a ballad. It happened to have reached its peak during the early 'rock and roll' era. But that's as close as it gets to being 'rock and roll'.

  • Love to hear gene sing this song just brilliant

  • I played the flute for his funeral in April 2005

  • play this flute...

  • Really? I'll bet Gene was surprised, because he was still alive! he didn't die until April 2006.

By the way, big memorial concert and ceremony to be held in Connecticut, October 4, 2008. See Pitney forums and web site for more details.

Pitney impersonator Tony Lee from UK to perform.

  • Crap, you're right...I hit the wrong button. It was- honest mistake...He lived down the road from me actually in Somers

  • I can hear every word

  • Yoo-Hoo...what do you think of this version?? I find it to be a contender for the best..........

  • this my song, my GREAT PRETENDER , i love this version much..

  • im gene pitney's and john rowles numberrrrrrr 1 fan
