1. Roosters will make a 'food call' even when there are other roosters around.

2. The food call is NOT a crow, it's more of a 'chook chook' sound that increases in intensity with the perceived 'goodness' of the food.

3. Biggest reason people want to believe chickens are stupid is so they can continue to eat factory farmed ones that live in horrible conditions, without feeling guilty. Chickens are AWESOME animals, and not dumb at all. How are they any different from your pet cat or dog?

No animal is stupid. Every living thing can feel the pain that most of them go through the abuse that they need to feel from heartless people. Its horrible. One of the worst sights you will ever see.

I`ve been a vegetarian for over 2 years, and recently began thinking I may start eating some meat if I research the intelligence of some animals and find out that is dumb as fuck. Chickens have failed the test, and remain off the menu for me. I can`t think of a sentient animal I`d wouldn`t feel guilty eating.

If people realized how similar animals are to us in all the "good" ways, how could they ever reconcile what horrors have been perpetrated upon them & continue to participate?

I don't think you can end cruelty to cows, pigs and other animals by ending the meat agency. You still have leather jackets, animal hide coats, wool sweaters, wool socks, Animal rugs. Oh I forgot Baseball. All baseball gloves are made out of leather or cow skin. How can you play baseball without killing a cow? Tell me are there any gloves not made out of cowskin. No. Then we have to kill cows. I hate to say it. But you may never get rid of all animal cruelty , only some.

@imaginepeace63 understandable. but the term 'cruelty' doesnt have to mean death. yes ppl kill and skin cows for leather, but they dont have to be tortured while they are alive. ending animal cruelty starts when we make small steps, like giving the animals sunlight, better food, and above all, making sure the chicken is DEAD before throwing it into boiling water :P

Other options: Pleather(plastic leather), poromeric imitation leathers(polyurethane leather), Hard vinyl(bonded vinyl fiber), Synthetic leather, etc, etc, etc, etc. How about imposing the murder on animals for fun games.

@truth2748 We already are unable to meet the worlds food needs without meat, it is said that by 2050 meat will have to be artificially grown in order to sustain the growing population. It isn't that simple.

@jacksawild : That is actualy not true at all... if all food were distributed fairly over the entire world everyone would have enough to eat. Were it not for the shitload of people overindulging in any way they can (I might be one of them). Meat is in no way a necesarry foodtype to get the worlds population enough to eat.

If you want to "save chickens" -- Stop asking the Gov't to do it. In fact focus on getting gov't out of the farming business.

Encourage people to buy grass-fed, free-pasture, and organic chickens and eggs.

Even if you are a vegan your tax dollars go towards Farm Subsidies.

If you try to force change through Gov't -- You'll only get more gov't and greater dollar destruction.

I used to have three pet chickens. It would be fun to just sit in the yard and watch them as they interacted and wandered around hunting bugs in the garden. Before I got them: ( From a local feed store that recommended they be killed at six weeks of age, of coarse I didnt kill them ) I had no idea of what complex individuals chickens are. They are amazing animals.

@raskelsrat - I grew up with a small chicken yard out back, too. We raised them partly for the eggs and mostly as pets. I remember as a small boy sitting in the chicken yard reading a book as the chickens played around me. I'd occasionally pick one up and hold it on my lap as I read, and she would fall asleep with her head under my arm. Sweet friends.
