I Bought a Cannondale 29er Hard tail Over 2 Months Ago, Forgetting the "SCIENCE MUMBO JUMBO" Im never going back to a 26er if youve gotten good to the point you can hit 20+mph on high psi knobby 26inch tires. You will use the 29er to its full advantage, I bought road slicks for my 29er when I first bought the bike but looks like I dont need them after all. THE DIFFERENCES CAN BE ARGUED OVER AND OVER.... But you have to feel the ride for yourself... From Urban Assault to Trails, I LOVE MY 29er!!!
@clovis6000 What clark is saying is this: if you have 50lbs on the tire and tire pressure is 50psi (pounds per square inch), then the contact patch with ground will be 1 square inch "irrespective of the tire size." (These numbers are just cooked up for example.) The difference between 26" and 29" will be the shape of that 1 square inch patch. Where I think Clark is wrong is in insinuating that the 29er contact patch could be less favorable..... I don't see how.
@derveish i have experienced a situation where having the longer contact patch is less favorable. actually its having a longer contact patch and bigger wheel diameter.
in situations where you have to pass through a dug-out car tire path. the 29 inch wheel have less wiggle room inside the mini trench.
If you are going to be taken as credible, please get your scientific facts correct. Contact patch is driven by tire pressure and carcass material. The only thing that changes from 26 to 29 is shape. Whether or not this is an advantage is up to the individual.
29ers are grand for xc or in some cases am. but 26 for dh is perfect. a 29er just gets bogged down in tight tecky stuff.

Sounds like bullshit to me. What scientific evidence do you have to support these claims?
