my dance teacher at scool is making us do a project on certain choreographers and she chose this one for me.. I love her work. so inspiring. what would you say the technical proficiency would be for the dancers. I havent been able to take a class specific to Graham.
for an assigment at university i have to choreograph a dance in the style of martha graham, which i have never done before! im really struggerling with choosing the music, we also have to explain why we have chosen the music.
if anyone has any suggestions i would be very grateful :) thankyou
Yes it is the Graham form...maybe a tad varied but even Graham herself changed her material as she evolved (except for the basic principle of contraction and release) through the introduction of Hawkins (1938) and Cunningham (1940s) into her works....
this absolutly IS Graham class. My teacher was a student of the Graham school and this is very similar to what we did in her class. This is my favorite we called it "deep stretch."
cool. I'm learning Graham technique at my dance school right now. i didn't know you could do the deep contractions with spirals... I don't like doing the deep contractions though cuz they hurt my hips and i am not flexible at all.
yup in ur 3rd year u spend a hell of a lot of your time at Laurie Grove up by Goldsmiths. So yes this is Laban. When I was on the BA the new school had jst opened so spent most of me time at Creekside, if u listen closely u can hear susan sentler shouting the orders like she does hehe :p what year u in Treklis? I still know peeps who go there.x
lol i'm on the BA1 just started. i'm doing cunningham at the moment with fred. susan is my choreography teacher. i didn't recognise her voice in this though. shes such a legend! who do you still know? i might know them. i know a lot of 3rd years x
modelsrperfection, it's not about your age. It's about learning the qualities of the movement. The qualities make it look easy. Trust me simple movements are the hardest to make look easy and simple. Plus this looks like a warming up excersise.
and yes it is one of the various set warm up exercises 'deep contractions.'
hopefully i'll be teaching Graham classes soon so i'll try and get some better quality footage up here, and I'm also hoping to go to New York in the summer to study at the Graham school, so keep posted! xx
OMG i wish i had the opportunite to study in laban... here in portugal we dont have this wonderful technic.... what are you doing now ? kiss :)*
(sorry for my english)

the people that teach the classes always seem to love it and the people that take them seem to hate it

deep contractions with spirals are the best!, i struggled for sometime to get them right, but once you master it they are a really good exercise

this wasn't done at laban?
i'm on the BA degree at laban
i'm trying to figure out what room your in but this can't be laban
they don't have brown wooden floors or double doors like that... in the middle of the rooms... all the entrances are from the corners of the rooms....
