  • Absolutely brilliant, thank you.

  • Thank you for the video tutorials, I have been struggling with watercolours but now feel truly inspired. Will follow these videos step by step as intended. I am sure I will enjoy the journey as much as watching Joanne create these lovely pieces. Thank you for sharing.

  • Joanne you really made hard painting look so simple that gave me encouragement to play with colours.....I am impressed

  • Lost interest in WC's? Dust on your paint tubes? Well get your brushes out, dust of your tubes and follow along with Joanne in this Video. She will take you step by step from a blank sheet of paper to a finished painting you'll be proud of. If you do as she instructs (very easy to follow) I promise you'll fall in love with WC's all over again. "Phil, did you do this?" "Yup, shore did."

  • beautiful work! thank you for the joy

  • Love your relaxing personality! Excellent video. Thanks,

    Carol from NH

  • Great video Joanne. I followed and painted at the same time, stopping the video to try and catch up with you! Your painting turned out beautifully. I especially loved the way you painted the shadows. My washes were too strong and my painting looks like a circus tent! Thank you very much and I shall keep practising.

  • Awesome Video! Extremely well presented and makes me want to paint! Thank you

  • Wonderful! I really like the use of a limited palette, it seems less intimidating. Thanks so much for sharing these videos!

  • Just wanted to say thank you for these two vvery educational and pleasing videos Lovely demonstration indeed. Would love to try it out.

  • Really inspiring - off to give it a go!

  • This is wonderful. I can't wait to try it. Thank you.

  • What wonderful inspitirational videos thank you joanne cant wait to get started. melva

  • I love the style and Joanne made it look so simple. I love to paint doors and windows. I cannot wait to try this. Thank you.

  • Really enjoyed Joanne's method of teaching. Thank you!

  • Hi. I was very impressed, both by Joannes personality, and her technique. She is also the first person to tspeak clearly enouygh for me to hear easily on my laptop.Thank you for the two great videos,I I cant wait to try out the paintings.Maurice.

  • Thank you for the opportunity to watch this sample tutorial. I really like your style of teaching and the method of your painting. I’ve got the temptation to start panting immediately Ant the result is really vivid and beautiful.

  • Very relaxing style, nicely uncomplicated with some heavy breathing thrown in.The freedom with the paint and paper is almost contagious..and I suspect I may be catching it .

  • This has been an inspiring video. Thank you Joanne.

  • Great. So helpful to see the painting grow like that.

  • Great work I cant believe all this loose painting can end up looking so good

  • I think Joanne is great, she makes it so easy to follow her, luv the accent, by the way I am from Birkenhead England and my maiden name is Davies, Bob we could be related, Thank you so much for your tuition.

  • Fantastic, way of doing this . Joanne simplyfies it lovely. I am going to attempt this, looking forward to it

  • This is wonderful.

  • This was very helpful to me as I often don't attempt some thing like this because I think it is too hard. Joanne demonstrates how simple this sort of subject can be without too much detail. I can't wait to start painting now! Thankyou

  • Beautifully done! I'm really looking forward to trying these techniques! Keep them coming, and thanks for asking for the feedback!

  • Thanks again for sharing Bob! Joanne does a great job showing how she achieves her loose watercolor style with lots of detail & high energy! She is careful to discuss technique- brush position, paint, palette. I was glad to see the subject matter included architectural elements as well as the flowers adding additional interest. The video itself, like the first demo, is of good quality. The slight variation in the studio set up added some extra interest as well.

  • I am going to try this, this weekend...!! It looks so good.

  • I look forward to trying your method! I loved the presentation and the results!!! I have been stuck on realism and this is a wonderful alternative that I am more then ready to work with. I look forward to your series! THANK YOU!!!!

  • Joanne Thank you for your energized teaching. I was introduced to your videos via Bob Davies. I am glad he did. Yes you have inspired me. Your applications are truly scary but I hope I will become as bold as you are. I will review these two videos again then at that point I'll be able to make an accurate feed back. Will be back for sure. But let me say at this point that you personality shone through your teaching and that you were truly awesome!

  • This is an inspiring lesson - I was a bit surprised at the changes to colours eg of the foliage and flowers early on but by the end I had a much better understanding of how far interpretation can go, and I felt that this is a picture I as a fairly raw beginner could have a go at though at the start I would not have believed so. The one thing I would have liked was a preview of the finished painting early on to get a sense of where things were going.

  • Lovely painting and lovely lady. I usually paint tight and need to get out of "my box". I will be sure to try her method. Thanks for the lesson.

    JulieK

  • Wonderfully done. Easy to follow. Keep them coming.

  • I would be delighted to own a video with Joanne showing us how to do all sorts of paintings using this style alone.. It was a pleasure watching both videos as she has such a passion for what she does... Thank you.

  • Amazing! You paint with such confidence! Thanks for sharing

  • Thumbs up to Joanne. Love the way how she creates this painting with few pigments and the loose painting techniques which I really have not attempted much before. It looks a little scary but I think she has boosted my confidence and I will certainly give it a go! Thank you.

  • Lovely demo, I've not used the loose technique much and this looked like so much fun...Many Thanks

  • you are FANTASTIC.......thank u so much......would love to see more and more of your lessons

  • It's really helpfull that you've shown the palette and the way of mixing colours!

    Nice demo!

  • I managed to watch this and found that I enjoy this method of painting and will give it a try. Well done on such a brilliant presentation

  • This video failed to com;lets playing on my computer.

  • Great!!! Very interesting!

  • the best ...... sorry for the others but i find you are the best tutor on line , your passion makes things look easy , thanks

  • Excellent lesson. I like your free/loose approach to painting. Thank you.

  • Fantastic lesson. I haven't done watercolor in a long while. I think I'm ready to try loose technique. Thanks so much for sharing your style of painting with us. Truly encouraging.

  • LOVED both videos. Chock full of information, delivered in a cheerful and informative way. Either angle is fine. The question is, will this help one to go ahead and paint... get the paint mixed before hand, be prepared, know what to do next, and be willing to try the loose techniques? I say YES!! Joanne is an excellent teacher. I liked the segmented scrapbook theme, but was a bit distracted by too much "stuff", like the windows, extra easel, etc. (minor point) Thank you so much, I'd buy it!

  • Really liked the way you added the shadows - excellent video - thanks.

  • I liked the angle of the sunflower painting better. Seems funny to look at the back of the easel. Love the demo though, thanks!

  • I enjoyed this video, and will try the ideas that Joanne has given me.

  • Really like this one, too. Good camera work. A couple minor times of hearing her breathing, but no big deal. She's an excellent teacher. I like her loose style and will give it a try myself. Thanks for letting us comment on the video.

  • Thank you so much for sharing your watercolor techniques in this great video. You are so talented!! I really like how you bring out and exploit the characteristics of the watercolors. That's what makes them such a fun medium,

  • Thanks again Joanne. A great video, I really enjoyed it.

  • Love the style....not easy to be loose while painting. Joanne is very good at telling what she is doing step-by-step! Would love to have her as an in person instructor!

    Mary Arneson of Brush-It-On

  • Very good lesson.. I enjoyed this video very much.Thank you.

  • Good loose impressionistic style. When Joanne is not speaking one can hear her breathing which the sensitive mike catches. Just a technical issue, but perhaps one to be sorted if this becomes a series? Love her enthusiasm. Interesting palette also. Good to see the colours written up on the screen. Please also do the same with the paper and its weight and tells us if this has been pre-stretched. Thanks Bob.

Nora Sanders (aka the Dancing Brush)

  • I found this video inspirational and am definitely going to use these techniques in my next watercolour attempt. Thanks heaps for sharing this information. Brilliant!

    colin59

  • I enjoyed this video also Joanne. Very inspiring! Thank you.

  • Wonderful. i love Joanne's teaching, If I were to offer any suggestions, the sunflower viewpoint was preferable and sometimes on the sound I can hear her breathing, These are technical things not comment on the teaching. I definitely will want these lessons.

  • I love your style of painting. I would be very interested in seeing more of your tutorials. I find you easy to follow. I did like the camera angle on the sunflower a wee bit better than this angle. I am not too concerned about the alizarin crimson being fugitive, as one could choose their own preferred pigments. Would love to see a landscape demo. Thank you!

  • Lovely work, easy to follow and it does inspire me to reach for my brushes. I wonder about the Alizarin Crimson. I've heard it is not lightfast, and wonder if there are other colors that could be substituted or is Joanne using a lightfast version. I know colors differ from brand to brand.

  • thank you arttutoronline for sharing Joanne thomas artistic skills.

  • I realy enjoyed the video, spontanious, well explained also.. Love in information about the paper very much. Great work.. Could not open the page for the survey, sorry about that.

  • It is great lessons! As I as a German grandmother teaching my australian granddaughter watercolour painting once a year, when I am there, it is also a great way of teaching her from Germina. Thanks a lot.

  • this is what I have been looking for in watercolour tutorials, I liked Joanne's style and manner, thought the camera work was great, I liked the pauses, letting you know when to let the paint dry and not to be concerned about the colours being too rich, they will dry lighter. Putting the colours being used on the screen is a great touch and and the paper weights and agree that having Joanne facing the camera is welcoming.Looking forward to watching the sunflower video, thanks again

  • Great, comming from oil painting gives good information

  • Another good informative video which suits me of my standard unlike the one adores himself

  • Thankyou for this lovely loose approach. I appreciate the extra information regarding paper weight. I like the fact that this type of information is written on the screen. I think it is great that Joanne doesn't have her back to the camera in this demonstration.

  • I love the free simple technics.

  • Great video, inspiring to see such lovely loose approach.

  • Awesome! Thank you!

  • enjoed this video very much, prefer the sunflower video camera angle though. the scene changes are excellent, and Joanne's loose style is inspiring - don't be afraid is the motto!

  • Excellent video! I am anxious to give Joanne's technique a try, she is motivating and inspirational. Thank you!

  • well done,thank you!

  • I loved the speed in which she did this! Limited palette was great as well.

  • Great tutorial, really showing each stage. Interesting use of limited palate. I am inspired to try.

  • Enjoyed a lot this video!! Interesting reduced palette, not sure about the rainbow wall effect though, I was anxious to see the stone wall!

I loved to see how the colors were mixed in the palette and the explanation for it.

I preferred the camera angle of the sunflower video, shows more of the work while it's being done. Excellent tutorial! Quite scary too!! ;o)) Thanks a lot Joanne!!

  • You have a great empathy with watercolour and you pack a great deal in the small time space - remarkable;thank you

  • very beautifull, and beautifully done, you are an inspiration but a hard goal to try to reach

  • Comment removed

  • Well done Joanne T.

  • Maggie, Thank you for the water colour lesson, I've learn't so much, as I am self thaught, it has been interesting.

  • I enjoyed this work. In 28years as a watercolourist I have never really been interested in painting flowers. However Joanne, you have motivated me by placing the flowers in a setting that is not a close up vase. I enjoyed the complete looseness of your work. Thank you.

  • Enjoyed this video as well, but prefer to have the paper straight and not at that angle. Would also have liked to have seen a more brick like finish on the wall instead of the stripe-y effect. Excellent tutorial - thank you!

  • Très intéressante vidéo, autant pour le travail de l' artiste, vif, aux couleurs riches avec une palette réduite.

La caméra est bien placée, tout est facile à voir. Merci

  • Excellent video, well done and produced. Thanks again Joanne for inspiring me. --- Ray

  • I found this very easy to follow. Her voice was clear and understandable. I also enjoyed the loose style of the paintings. I will be looking forward to more videos.More information on the paper would be helpful.

  • Beautiful! I'm in a debate. If it were me I think I would've done a splatter from the brush or a toothbrush to indicate the dimples and pits in the wall, but I think I like the simplicity of your wall with the focus being on the window. I'm a much tighter watercolorist than you, though, so that would explain a lot. Beautiful work! You are very brave with your paintings.

  • This video is great, too! Hard to decide whether I like the sunflower or the window best! Thanks!

  • Even as someone who adores a loose style this is of no interest to me.I had also lost interest as soon as Alizarin Crimson was mentioned.Alizarin is a fugitive color and for a professional to be using it in this day and age with all the knowledge available, is not too hot.If it was Permanent Alizarin then it would have been mentioned. So no thank you.

  • Thanks again for answering all of my questions regarding loosening things up a bit. I am completely self-taught except for the Bob Davies' CD's so any time I can learn something new, I'm there.

  • I also prefer the camera angle of the sunflower video. I felt more comfortable watching it, more included. I have enjoyed this video though, beautifully instructive, learn so many techniques along the way. Love the finished work.

  • Another well done video. Again, I love Joanne's easy teaching style and great instructions on color mixing with a limited pallet. You are definitely on the right track and I look forward to seeing what else you produce.

  • Also forgot to say, love the scrapbook page and how it breaks out the different segments, very well done,

  • Excellent instructions. Camera angle much better than sunflower, perhaps a finished painting or a closer view in so that back of easel doesn't take your attention away from Joanne. Disagree with those who said didn't like watching the pallet because it gives very good instructions too of how to make the washes and color mixing. Love the big mop brush and the water container.

  • I really enjoyed the video. Since you are wanting a critique, I think that some info regarding the paper would be useful. Has she stretched it? What paper does she think works best, and why?

I think the camera angle works well.

I very much like the views of the pallette.

I was disappointed that she didn't paint a rock wall, as is shown in the photo.

  • Very good instruction. I liked the camera angle as it showed more of how she used the water and towel, etc, but preferred the the sunflower approach as far as the actual painting demonstration The wall colors were interesting-would have like more texture. Again-is this a watercolor board or is the paper stretched on something? Liked the way she achieved value in the flowers.

  • I like thios. My paintings are always so formal, I seem to try and make them look like photographs, this technique looks interesting and I will definately be "Having a Go"

  • i liked the video as well and it was very informative with many options to use on other items. I will agree with an earlier post about the camera angles - I liked the sunflower angles better as well. I hope there are more to come -

  • Great thanks. A lovely demonstration.

  • The face on angle is very nice, a complement for Joanne as much as it is for the cameraperson :) For the first 8 minutes I was hopeing you wouldn't take a drink of your large jug of orange juice!

    Loving the wall colours!

I'm looking forward to this series being released, I'll definately pick it up.

  • Enjoyed this video too! But I do prefer the camera angle of the sunflower demo. It is better to look at the painting as Joanne talks, rather than at the back of the easel. Can't wait to see more of her work!

  • not to shure the rainbow wall works

  • very clear, very nice, wonderfly done

    More like this, please

    .....got to go paint.

  • Nice and well demonstrated. Good camera angles that showed all the painting and palette. She did wet the paper over all for the back ground wall and said "to let it set for just a little bit". I thought you let the water set "until the glisten just goes away" and then start to paint. If that is the effect she was wanting she might give those instructions. Excellent teaching video.

  • I so enjoyed this demo; and, as a beginner, found it easy to follow! I especially liked the "scrapbook" format of switching from scene to scene! Looking forward to more!!

  • Could not stop watching. Have now used up all my internet connection for the month.. I think it was worth it. I have been painting for 10 years and still learned a lot from this....How you coloured your walls was inspiring. Thank you Joanne

  • Lovely demonstration Joanne....nice and clear an d informative...Loose n lovely! I liked the face on camera position more in this demonstration.

  • Again, great instruction and step-by-step is very helpful. I did not like the camera angles in this video. Joanne was hidden at times and the easel with the big board and the table w/all o her supplies seemed to create a barrier for me. I liked the camera angles in the sunflower demo better because I felt I got a better view of everything and we saw more of the painting more often. I do like seeing the palette and watching her mix the colors in both videos.

  • Another lovely demonstration. It is going to help me so much. Thank you for your clear explanation and bright and easy style!

  • Very instructive and helpful if you are an impressionist unfortunatly I am more of a realist but I can't say I do not like this picture because I do I think it is very continental looking and bright and breazey

  • Yesss - love seeing the palette too.

    Your work is gorgeous :)

Would also like to see it done in the colors of the original pic

  • I've ruined many a painting when it gets to the shadow stage. Joanne makes it look so easy! Inspiring...

  • Great video, love the new camera angles and mixing. A breath of fresh air. Will definately give this one a go.

  • Thank you!

    5*

  • Yesss - love seeing the palette too.

    Your work is gorgeous :)

  • Lovely video, Joanne. It's informative with clear instructions and so easy to watch. Scary? Yes! But I'm going to give it a try. Thanks.

    Audrey
